Geochemical cycling of arsenic in a coastal aquifer.

Biogeochemically modified pore waters from subterranean estuaries, defined as the mixing zone between freshwater and saltwater in a coastal aquifer, are transported to coastal waters through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). SGD has been shown to impact coastal and perhaps global trace metal budgets. The focus of this study was to investigate the biogeochemical processes that control arsenic cycling in subterranean estuaries. Total dissolved As, as well as a suite of other trace metals and nutrients, were measured in a series of wells and sediment cores at the head of Waquoit Bay, MA. Dis

Effects of pure and dyed PCE on physical and interfacial properties of remedial solutions.

Hydrophobic dyes have been used to visually distinguish dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminants from background aqueous phases and soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a dyed DNAPL, 0.5 g Oil-Red-O/l of PCE, on the physical properties of remedial solutions: water, co-solvents (50, 70, and 90% (v/v) ethanol), and surfactants (4% (w) sodium dihexyl sulfosuccinate). This study compared the densities, viscosities, and interfacial tensions (IFTs) of the remedial solutions in contact with both dyed and undyed PCE. The presence of the dye in PCE substantially

An optimization method for measuring the stomata in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) under multiple abiotic stresses.

As a gateway for gas exchange, pores regulate the transport of air and water in carbon assimilation, respiration, and transpiration to quickly adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, the study of stomatal movement characteristics of plants is helpful to strengthen the understanding of the mechanism of plant response to multi-environmental stress, and can improve the function of plant resistance to stresses. The stomatal movement of Arabidopsis leaves was observed by staining the stomata with rhodamine 6G, but this method has not been reported in other plant leaf stomata studies. Taking cass

Timing and space usage are disrupted by amphetamine in rats maintained on DRL 24-s and DRL 72-s schedules of reinforcement.

RATIONALE: A differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate schedule (DRL) delivers reinforcement only when the interresponse time (IRT) exceeds a fixed time interval, thereby shaping rats to discriminate the timing of their responses. However, little is known about the motor behavior and location of the rats in the chamber during the IRTs that lead to reinforcement. Although amphetamine is known to disrupt DRL timing behavior, the effects of this drug on non-operant motor behavior during DRL performance has not yet been quantified. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to measure the motor beh

A blood-prostate barrier restricts cell and molecular movement across the rat ventral prostate epithelium.

INTRODUCTION: Blood-epithelial barriers have been described in the testis and epididymis, but the possibility of such barriers in other regions of the male genitourinary tract has received little investigation. The purpose of this study was to use in vivo micro-puncture to determine if the blood-epithelial barrier exists in the rat ventral prostate. In addition, using a model of prostatic inflammation, we sought to examine the effect of inflammation on the passage of blood borne molecules and leukocytes into the prostatic ductal lumen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were div

Environmentally relevant mixture of S-metolachlor and its two metabolites affects thyroid metabolism in zebrafish embryos.

Herbicides and their metabolites are often detected in water bodies where they may cause adverse effects to non-target organisms. Their effects at environmentally relevant concentrations are often unclear, especially concerning mixtures of pesticides. This study thus investigated the impacts of one of the most used herbicides: S-metolachlor and its two metabolites, metolachlor oxanilic acid (MOA) and metolachlor ethanesulfonic acid (MESA) on the development of zebrafish embryos (Danio rerio). Embryos were exposed to the individual substances and their environmentally relevant mixture until 120

Pesticide residues in coastal waters affected by rice paddy effluents temporarily stored in a wastewater reservoir in southern Japan.

This paper presents the occurrence, distribution, and environmental impact of pesticide residues in coastal water in southern Japan that receives effluents from a wastewater reservoir temporarily storing surface runoffs of rice paddy fields located near the coastline during the 2005 rice planting season. Concentrations of 14 target pesticides were measured by GC-MS and the hazards posed by the most important pesticides detected were evaluated by acute toxicity tests using a marine diatom, Chaetoceros sp., and a marine amphipod, Hyale barbicornis. Six pesticides (fenobucarb, flutolanil, iproben

Linked models to assess the impacts of climate change on nitrogen in a Norwegian river basin and FJORD system.

Dynamically downscaled data from two Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs), ECHAM4 from the Max-Planck Institute (MPI), Germany and HadAm3H from the Hadley Centre (HAD), UK, driven with two scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions (IS92a and A2, respectively) were used to make climate change projections. These projections were then used to drive four effect models linked to assess the effects on hydrology, and nitrogen (N) concentrations and fluxes, in the Bjerkreim river basin (685-km(2)) and its coastal fjord, southwestern Norway. The four effect models were the hydrological mode

Sources and variations of mercury in tuna.

While the bulk of human exposure to mercury is through the consumption of marine fish, most of what we know about mercury methylation and bioaccumulation is from studies of freshwaters. We know little of where and how mercury is methylated in the open oceans, and there is currently a debate whether methylmercury concentrations in marine fish have increased along with global anthropogenic mercury emissions. Measurements of mercury concentrations in Yellowfin tuna caught off Hawaii in 1998 show no increase compared to measurements of the same species caught in the same area in 1971. On the basis

The Role of Glymphatic System in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease Pathogenesis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of neurodegenerative dementia, whilst Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative movement disorder. These two neurodegenerative disorders share the accumulation of toxic proteins as a pathological hallmark. The lack of definitive disease-modifying treatments for these neurogenerative diseases has led to the hypothesis of new pathogenic mechanisms to target and design new potential therapeutic approaches. The recent observation that the glymphatic system is supposed to be responsible for the movement of cerebrospinal fluid into the brain an

Using semi-folded arenas to observe spontaneous emergence of collective trails in whole colonies of termites.

BACKGROUND: Collective movement in social organisms emerges from local interactions and can generate large-scale spatial patterns of ecological relevance. In termites, trail formation is a well-known collective phenomenon, yet reproducing and recording its emergence under controlled laboratory conditions using whole colonies remains challenging. Existing laboratory approaches often rely on confined arenas or manually assembled subgroups, which can restrict movement and limit observation of colony-level dynamics. Here, we present a semi-folded arena designed for whole-colony observation of term

Deciphering spatio-temporal variation of groundwater recharge patterns in the large irrigation district.

Global warming and human activities have an inconvenient impact on groundwater systems, frequent agricultural irrigation may alter the groundwater recharge and circulation. However, research on the spatio-temporal variations of groundwater recharge patterns in large irrigation districts remains insufficient. Focusing on the Yellow River South Bank Irrigation District in Inner Mongolia, this study analyzed the hydrochemical and stable isotopic compositions of canal water, river water, and groundwater during April, July and November to explored the spatio-temporal evolution of groundwater rechar

Mapping silver eel migration routes in the North Sea.

Recent developments in tracking technology resulted in the mapping of various marine spawning migration routes of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). However, migration routes in the North Sea have rarely been studied, despite many large European rivers and hence potential eel growing habitat discharge into the North Sea. In this study, we present the most comprehensive map to date with migration routes by silver European eels in the North Sea and document for the first time successful eel migration through the English Channel. Migration tracks were reconstructed for 42 eels tagged in Belgiu

A Synoptic View of the Ventilation and Circulation of Antarctic Bottom Water from Chlorofluorocarbons and Natural Tracers.

Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is the coldest, densest, most prolific water mass in the global ocean. AABW forms at several distinct regions along the Antarctic coast and feeds into the bottom limb of the meridional overturning circulation, filling most of the global deep ocean. AABW has warmed, freshened, and declined in volume around the globe in recent decades, which has implications for the global heat and sea level rise budgets. Over the past three decades, the use of tracers, especially time-varying tracers such as chlorofluorocarbons, has been essential to our understanding of the format

Transmission dynamics of pancreas disease (PD) in a Norwegian fjord: aspects of water transport, contact networks and infection pressure among salmon farms.

Pancreas disease (PD) in marine salmon farming is caused by salmon pancreas disease virus (SPDV). Virus survival, infection pressure and contact networks among farms influence the potential of PD to spread. The present study aims to explore contact networks and infection pressure and their ability to explain transmission dynamics of PD in a Norwegian fjord. In this study, we included all records of PD by subtype 3 (SPDV3) in the study population from the first reported in August 2006 to the last reported in November 2009. Using logistic regression analyses, we found that contact network by wat

The influence of Castanhão reservoir on nutrient and suspended matter transport during rainy season in the ephemeral Jaguaribe river (CE, Brazil).

Measurements of nutrient and suspended matter concentrations and loads entering and leaving the Castanhão reservoir during the rainy season were carried out to assess the influence of this large reservoir on land-sea fluvial transport in the ephemeral Jaguaribe river basin. Spatial variation indicated statistically significant attenuation of concentrations only for total phosphorous and suspended matter across the reservoir. Strong retention of nutrients and suspended matter loads by the reservoir was observed with average trapping efficiency of 89% for dissolved silicon, 98% of soluble reacti

Neurology: an ancient sensory organ in crocodilians.

Crocodilians hunt at night, waiting half-submerged for land-bound prey to disturb the water surface. Here I show that crocodilians have specialized sensory organs on their faces that can detect small disruptions in the surface of the surrounding water, and which are linked to a dedicated, hypertrophied nerve system. Such 'dome' pressure receptors are also evident in fossils from the Jurassic period, indicating that these semi-aquatic predators solved the problem of combining armour with tactile sensitivity many millions of years ago.

Biological and behavioral features and colonization of the sylvatic mosquito Sabethes identicus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes of the genus Sabethes are exclusively sylvatic species occurring in Central and South Americas, where they play a role in the transmission of arbovirus. Sabethes identicus, a common bamboo-breeder species, has been found naturally infected with yellow fever virus. Our study aimed to describe biological and behavioral features of Sa. identicus in the laboratory, as well as establish and standardize an isolated colony for experimental assays. We tested different larval densities and evaluated larval and pupal development time, oviposition behavior, egg production, and longevity. We al
