A rapid and quantitative method for the determination of pramoxine hydrochloride by high-pressure liquid chromatography is presented. The drug is extracted as the salt from a preparation with a high lipoid composition by partitioning it to the aqueous phase of an ether-methanol-water-acetic acid system. The extract is chromatographed on an octadecylsilane bonded packing with a methanol-water-acetic acid-methanesulfonic acid mobile phase. The time required for each separation is approximately 6 min. Analytical recoveries of 100.4 +/- 1.5% were obtained.

A survey of X-ray film processing departments revealed the main airborne contaminants to be sulphur dioxide and acetic acid at concentrations of about 0.1 ppm. Glutaraldehyde was not detected either in the ambient air or in the exhaust duct from an automatic film processor. Laboratory studies confirmed sulphur dioxide and acetic acid as the main headspace constituents above working strength processing solutions but glutaraldehyde and butyraldehyde were also detected.

Studies on tryptophan metabolism in PEM were performed. In this respect, the basal excretion of tryptophan and some of its metabolites, namely, kynurenine, 3 OH-anthranilic, anthramilic, indol-3-acetic, 5 OH-indol acetic and xanthurenic acids were determined.
