Cardiovascular disease is strongly influenced by mitochondrial dysfunction, yet how mitochondrial stress is communicated beyond the affected cell to coordinate systemic responses remains incompletely understood. Mitokines are stress-responsive signaling factors that link mitochondrial perturbation to cellular and interorgan adaptation. These include nuclear-encoded proteins such as fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), as well as mitochondrial-derived peptides including Humanin and MOTS-c. This review critically examines mitokine regulation and signa

Understanding adaptation to complex environments requires information about how exposure to one selection pressure affects adaptation to others. For bacteria, antibiotics and viral parasites (phages) are two of the most common selection pressures and are both relevant for treatment of bacterial infections: increasing antibiotic resistance is generating significant interest in using phages in addition or as an alternative to antibiotics. However, we lack knowledge of how exposure to antibiotics affects bacterial responses to phages. Specifically, it is unclear how the negative effects of antibi

The transition from immature pullets to sexually mature female chickens is accompanied by pronounced structural and functional modifications. This is accompanied by coordinated changes in hormonal and metabolic pathways that primarily regulate reproduction, nutrient utilization, and mineral homeostasis to compensate for temporary imbalances. In kidney, specific regulation of reabsorption processes is required which depend on dietary calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) intake and physiological needs. This study aims to elucidate the physiological processes underlying kidney adaptation along maturat

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a zoonotic foodborne pathogen that triggers life-threatening invasive illnesses. MarR-type transcriptional regulators widely control bacterial stress adaptation, antibiotic tolerance and virulence, playing crucial roles in the pathogenesis of diverse bacterial pathogens. Lmo0840 is a conserved member of this family; however, its physiological functions and regulatory networks in L. monocytogenes remain completely unexplored. To this end, we constructed an lmo0840 deletion mutant and its complemented strain in the L. monocytogenes EGD-e background an

In response to the lockdowns and travel bans during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Peter C. Butler at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), started a virtual islet biology seminar series. After the authors of this article joined him as co-organizers, this initiative became the Islet Research Seminar Series (IRSS). Like islets of Langerhans adapt to their changing environment, the islet biology community quickly embraced this new format. The IRSS evolved into a lasting scientific forum that convenes weekly and is attended by islet biologists from the U.S., Canada, Europe, an

Most studies of motor learning focus on adaptation, which can be described as recalibration within an existing controller following changes in dynamics, kinematics, or sensory feedback. In these paradigms, control variables, coordinate representations, and feedback organization are treated as available a priori, and learning as parameter tuning within a specified controller architecture. However, de novo motor-learning tasks require learners to establish novel relationships between intention, sensory feedback, and action, rather than merely recalibrating a familiar control organization. These

Restoring vision through prosthetic devices represents one of the most ambitious frontiers in translational neuroscience. Despite decades of progress, functional outcomes remain highly variable, often falling short of patient expectations, as adapting to restored vision through visual prostheses is a complex process influenced by neural plasticity, perceptual learning, and psychological factors. We propose a five-stage framework that captures the hierarchically dependent yet fragile process of adaptation: Device Activation, Perceptual Calibration, Cognitive Integration, Behavioral Generalizati

This study reports the identification of a rare allele of TabZIP45-4B (TabZIP45-4Bpnd1) that confers tolerance to nitrogen starvation. Knockout of TabZIP45-4B increases spike number and grain yield per plant in wheat under nitrogen-starvation conditions by downregulating TaDWARF4. Introgression of TabZIP45-4Bpnd1 into a modern commercial cultivar improves multiple agronomic traits with minimal nitrogen input.

Rapid adaptation to novel environments is often shaped not only by newly acquired mutations but also by historical genetic backgrounds established through prior evolutionary events. However, the extent to which such historical contingency contributes to the rapid evolution of insecticide resistance remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the emergence of resistance to flonicamid, a recently deployed insecticide, in the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. We show that constitutive overexpression of the P450 enzymes CYP6CY3 and CYP6CY4, already widespread in populations of M. persicae be

Understanding species-specific responses to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is essential for phytoremediation and ecological risk assessment. This study evaluated the tolerance and stress response of two phytoremediation species, Brassica juncea and Sorghum bicolor, grown under a pollution gradient created by mixing mine-contaminated soil with uncontaminated soil. Soil DTPA-extractable metal concentrations, and plant biomass yield, PTEs bioaccumulation, and biochemical indicators of oxidative stress (chlorophylls, proline and phenolic compounds) were evaluated. Soil DTPA-extractable Cd and Z

Short-term motor adaptation is a form of motor learning that optimizes how sensory information about a target's location is translated into a target-directed movement, using sensory feedback on performance errors. When actual and predicted sensory feedback differ, sensory prediction errors (SPEs) are generated, enabling the cerebellum to adjust this mapping. In contrast, reinforcement learning uses reward prediction error (RPEs) based on fulfilled or unfulfilled reward expectations to shape future actions. As RPE-related information also reaches the cerebellum, we wondered whether it interacts

The vertebrate eye, while commonly perceived as a soft-tissue structure, is reinforced in numerous taxa by an internal ocular skeleton composed of scleral cartilage and ossicles. This manuscript presents a histological case report documenting scleral cartilage in the Himalayan Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos daphanea) and integrates these findings with a comprehensive synthesis of current understanding of the ocular skeleton's evolution, development and functional morphology. These findings are consistent with previously described avian scleral architecture. Although based on a single specimen

Coturnix coturnix is widely used as a laboratory model due to its small size, ease of care, and rapid maturation. This study examined the relationship between the structure of its alimentary tract and feeding habits using anatomical, morphometric, histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural analyses. The stomach comprised a glandular proventriculus and a muscular gizzard, while the ileum was the longest intestinal segment. Paired, well-developed caeca were present at the ileocecal junction. Histologically, the alimentary canal showed the typical four layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis,

How did Homo sapiens thrive in extreme environments during their dispersal across Eurasia? Unraveling adaptations that enabled human survival during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) remains critical. Here, we analyze 42 genomes from Holocene hunter-gatherers (Jomon) in the Japanese archipelago, revealing their deep ancestry from an isolated Upper Paleolithic (UP) East Eurasian lineage. We detect gene flow from northern UP Siberians into Jomon, reconciling long-standing debates between bioanthropology and archaeology regarding East Asian peopling. We find no Jomon-specific Denisovan ancestry, sug

Isolated populations of postglacial relicts are known from many regions and are typically found on mountains for terrestrial species and in lakes for aquatic species. Among the few aquatic mammalian relicts, the Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) has been landlocked in Lake Saimaa, Finland, for the last 10,000 y. Saimaa ringed seals show genetic, behavioral, and morphological differences from the other ringed seal subspecies, but the extent these differences stem from the end of the last glacial period remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate with comprehensive sampling and state-of-the-

Patients with cerebellar damage experience various motor impairments, but the specific sequence of primary and compensatory processes that contribute to these deficits remains unclear. To clarify this, we reversibly blocked cerebellar outflow in monkeys engaged in planar reaching tasks. This intervention led to a spatially selective reduction in hand velocity, primarily due to decreased muscle torque, especially in movements requiring high inter-joint torque coupling. When examining repeated reaches to the same target, we found that the reduced velocity resulted from both an immediate deficit

Contrasting almost all other mammalian wintering strategies, Eurasian common shrews, Sorex araneus, endure winter by shrinking their brain, skull, and most organs, only to then regrow to breeding size the following spring. How such tiny mammals achieve this unique brain size plasticity while maintaining activity through the winter remains unknown. To discover potential adaptations underlying this trait, we analyzed seasonal differential gene expression in the shrew hypothalamus, a brain region that both regulates metabolic homeostasis and drastically changes size, and compared hypothalamus gen
