Extracts of Passive Samplers Deployed in Variably Contaminated Wetlands in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region Elicit Biochemical and Transcriptomic Effects in Avian Hepatocytes.

Recent contaminant monitoring in boreal wetlands situated in Alberta's Athabasca oil sands region revealed increased concentrations of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in passive sampling devices deployed in wetlands close to bitumen surface mining operations. In this study, graded concentrations of semipermeable membrane device (SPMD) extracts, collected from 4 wetlands with variable burdens of PACs, were administered to chicken and double-crested cormorant (DCCO) embryonic hepatocytes to determine effects on 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity and mRNA expression. Concentratio…

Demographic and clinical correlates of accelerometer assessed physical activity and sedentary time in lung cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVE: To determine demographic and clinical correlates of accelerometer assessed physical activity and sedentary time among a population-based sample of lung cancer survivors. METHODS: Lung cancer survivors in Southern Alberta, Canada (N = 527) were invited to complete a mailed survey assessing socio-demographics and wear an Actigraph® GT3X+ accelerometer for 7 days. Average daily minutes of physical activity and sedentary time were derived from the accelerometer data. Accelerometer data were processed using standard Freedson cutpoints, and correlates of physical activity and sedentary t…

Spatial and temporal drivers of zoonotic pathogen contamination of an agricultural watershed.

In regions where animal agriculture is prominent, such as southern Alberta, higher rates of gastrointestinal illness have been reported when compared with nonagricultural regions. This difference in the rate of illness is thought to be a result of increased zoonotic pathogen exposure through environmental sources such as water. In this study, temporal and spatial factors associated with bacterial pathogen contamination of the Oldman River, which transverses this region, were analyzed using classification and regression tree analysis. Significantly higher levels of fecal indicators; more freque…

Community-based outbreaks in vulnerable populations of invasive infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 5 and 8 in Calgary, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) typically occur within institutions. Beginning in 2005, we detected an increase in serotype (ST) 5 and ST8 IPD cases, predominantly in homeless persons living in an open community. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: CASPER (Calgary Area S. pneumoniae Epidemiology Research) surveillance study of all IPD (sterile site isolates) in our region (pop ~1,100,000). Interviews and chart reviews of all cases and all isolates phenotypically analyzed and selected isolated tested by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Dur

Education Research: Feasibility, Reliability and Educational Value of Neuromuscular Ultrasound Training in a Canadian Neurology Residency Program: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Point-of-care neuromuscular ultrasound (NMUS) is increasingly used in the evaluation of peripheral nervous system disorders; however, there remains a gap in education and training for neurology residents. We evaluated whether neurology residents can feasibly be trained in basic NMUS skills and nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) measurement and whether they value incorporation of this training into their curriculum. METHODS: Participants included neurology residents (postgraduate years 1-5) at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). All completed pretrai…

Effects of a Province-wide Triaging System for TIA: The ASPIRE Intervention.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urgent transient ischemic attack (TIA) management to reduce stroke recurrence is challenging, particularly in rural and remote areas. In Alberta, Canada, despite an organized stroke system, data from 1999 to 2000 suggested that stroke recurrence after TIA was as high as 9.5% at 90 days. Our objective was to determine whether a multifaceted population-based intervention resulted in a reduction in recurrent stroke after TIA. METHODS: In this quasi-experimental health services research intervention study, we implemented a TIA management algorithm across the entire prov…

Does obesity affect patient-reported outcomes following total knee arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: There is an existing perception that obesity has a negative impact on complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, data on the impact of obesity levels on patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) is sparse. We investigated the association between different obesity classes with PROMs among patients who underwent TKA. METHODS: We performed retrospective secondary analyses on data extracted from the total joint replacement data repository (Alberta, Canada) managed by the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute (ABJHI). Patients had WOMAC and EQ5D scores measured at baseli…

Antimicrobial use on Canadian dairy farms.

Antimicrobial use (AMU) data are critical for formulating policies for containing antimicrobial resistance. The present study determined AMU on Canadian dairy farms and characterized variation in AMU based on herd-level factors such as milk production, somatic cell count, herd size, geographic region and housing type. Drug use data were collected on 89 dairy herds in 4 regions of Canada, Alberta, Ontario, Québec, and the Maritime provinces (Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia) for an average of 540 d per herd. Dairy producers and farm personnel were asked to deposit empty drug…

Case Series of Jamestown Canyon Virus Infections with Neurologic Outcomes, Canada, 2011-2016.

Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) is a mosquitoborne orthobunyavirus in the California serogroup that circulates throughout Canada and the United States. Most JCV exposures result in asymptomatic infection or a mild febrile illness, but JCV can also cause neurologic diseases, such as meningitis and encephalitis. We describe a case series of confirmed JCV-mediated neuroinvasive disease among persons from the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, Canada, during 2011-2016. We highlight the case definitions, epidemiology, unique features and clinical manifestations, disease s…

Variations in structure of the outflow tract of the human embryonic heart: A new hypothesis for generating bicuspid aortic semilunar valves.

Outflow tract development of the heart is complex. The presence, differential growth and interactions of the various tissues through space and time contribute to the final development of the tract. This paper presents a novel interpretation of observations of outflow tract development, in particular of the aortic and pulmonary semilunar valves in embryos from the Shaner Collection at the University of Alberta. Three-dimensional reconstructions assist in the visualization of the spatial relationships of the developing valve tissues. In some embryos the aortic intercalated valve swelling is disp…

Colon carcinoid tumors. A population-based study.

PURPOSE: The aim of our investigation was to evaluate the clinical presentation of patients with carcinoid tumors of the colon and to estimate the survival and potential prognostic factors of this tumor type. METHODS: A population-based study was performed using data from the Alberta Cancer Registry between 1964 and 1988 (inclusive). The clinical records and the pathologic material of eligible patients were reviewed. Survival was estimated both as crude survival and with the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: During the 25-year study period (1964-1988), 36 true carcinoid tumors of the colon were …
