Successful Management of Limbal Dermoid in Infancy and Childhood: A Case Series.

This is a case series study that reported the management outcomes of five cases of limbal dermoid that were managed during infancy and childhood. Oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia or Goldenhar syndrome was present in one of the infants treated. Limbal dermoid, preauricular skin appendages, Duane's disease, tetralogy of Fallot, and sacral agenesis were all present. The limbal dermoid was the only finding in the other patients. Although some limbal dermoid didn't affect the vision, others can affect the vision by inducing astigmatism leading to amblyopia in children. In addition to cosmetic reaso…

Impact of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on stereoscopic vision and retinal structure in adult amblyopic rodents.

PURPOSE: The impact of visual deprivation on retinal structure is widely debated. Experimental models, like monocular deprivation through li … , some studies have focused on the ganglion cell layer using post-mortem histological techniques in amblyopia models induced by monocular deprivation. METHODS: In this study, we used Cliff test to assess stereoscopic vision and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to evaluate retinal changes in an in vivo model of visual deprivation treate …

Distorted optical input affects human perception.

Collinear facilitation, the mechanism for grouping contour elements, is a process involving lateral interactions that improve the detectability of a target by the presence of collinear flankers. It was shown that the development of collinear facilitation is experience dependent and that it may be impaired when the visual input is distorted in one meridian (meridional amblyopia). In oblique astigmatism, the blurring is on the opposite oblique meridian in both eyes, resulting in two conflicting images, which may affect the development of binocular vision. We hypothesized that the collinear facil…

Outcomes of surgery in patients with sensory exotropia.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory exotropia is often due to profound amblyopia. Surgery essentially aims to improve aesthetic appearance and quality of life. Our goal was to discuss clinical features of sensory exotropia as well as surgical indications and outcomes. METHODS: Medical records of 43 patients who underwent sensory exotropia surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Each patient had an ophthalmological examination and a complete sensorimotor assessment. All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon. We studied the influence of certain prognostic factors on motility outcomes, such as age of on…

Experience-dependent central vision deficits: Neurobiology and visual acuity.

Abnormal visual experience during childhood often leads to amblyopia, with strong links to binocular dysfunction that can include poor acuity in both eyes, especially in central vision. In animal models of amblyopia, the non-deprived eye is often considered normal and what limits binocular acuity. This leaves open the question whether monocular deprivation (MD) induces binocular dysfunction similar to what is found in amblyopia. In previous studies of MD cats, we found a loss of excitatory receptors restricted to the central visual field representation in visual cortex (V1), including both eye…

Pediatric aphakic contact lens wear: rates of successful wear.

Two hundred thirty-eight consecutive patients with pediatric cataracts were fitted with a variety of aphakic contact lenses after cataract extraction. Thirty-nine patients did not return for follow up. Of the remaining 199 patients, 40 discontinued contact lens wear. None of the 78 patients with unilateral or bilateral acquired cataracts discontinued contact lens wear due to problems wearing their lenses, although nine discontinued contact lens wear due to poor vision or difficulty maintaining amblyopia treatment. Twenty-two of 84 patients with unilateral congenital cataracts discontinued lens…

Refraction changes in children developing convergent or divergent strabismus.

Strabismus and amblyopia were studied in a cohort of children born in 1979 or 1980 in the area of Västerås, Sweden. Forty percent of the children had participated in a voluntary eye examination at 1 year of age. All children diagnosed as strabismic and/or amblyopic between 1979 and 1988 at any of the three eye clinics in the area were included in this study. Strabismic cases were mostly detected by the parents while microstrabismus and straight eye amblyopia were found at the general 4 years of age screening at children's health centres. In 57 cases with (n = 31) and without amblyopia (n = 41)…

[Ptosis surgery. Current aspects].

Ptosis can be congenital but is more commonly an acquired condition occurring in particular as involutional forms. In addition to the aesthetic aspects ptosis mostly also leads to functional problems. Congenital ptosis in particular carries a high risk of amblyopia in childhood, therefore competent and close-knit pediatric ophthalmological treatment is important. Correction of ptosis is surgical and direct or indirect procedures are available depending on the conditions. Transcutaneous levator surgery has proven to be the universally applicable method for ptosis of all degrees of severity and …

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome in the pediatric population: A review.

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is a rare autosomal-dominant neurocristopathy that presents with a variety of classical ocular and systemic findings. The pathophysiology of the disease involves anterior segment dysgenesis, and patients may present with ophthalmic complications early in life, including secondary glaucoma, high refractive errors, amblyopia, and permanent visual damage. There are a limited number of studies in the literature that focus primarily on pediatric patients with ARS. The purpose of this article was to review the current literature on clinical presentation, genetic associ…

Visual rehabilitation indicating neuroplasticity in an esotropic adult patient with diplopia after sudden visual acuity loss in the non-amblyopic eye: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this case report is to present the successful management of both diplopia and amblyopia in a specific clinical situation, demonstrating neuroplasticity of the visual system in an adult patient. Causes of diplopia include eye pathologies in monocular diplopia and ischemic ocular motor nerve palsies, sudden life-threatening and chronic conditions in central nervous system in binocular diplopia. Strabismic amblyopia and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy are quite often ophthalmic conditions, first one is caused by suppression during developmental period and th…

Blur Representation in the Amblyopic Visual System Using Natural and Synthetic Images.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is diagnosed as a reduced acuity in an otherwise healthy eye, which indicates that the deficit is not happening in the eye, but in the brain. One suspected mechanism explaining these deficits is an elevated amount of intrinsic blur in the amblyopic visual system compared to healthy observers. This "internally produced blur" can be estimated by the "equivalent intrinsic blur method", which measures blur discrimination thresholds while systematically increasing the external blur in the physical stimulus. Surprisingly, amblyopes do not exhibit elevated intrinsic blur when measu…

Disruption of Positional Encoding at Small Separations in the Amblyopic Periphery.

PURPOSE: Positional judgments in amblyopia are impaired more at the center of the visual field than in the periphery. However, the effects of visual field position frequently are confounded with stimulus separation. The purpose of this experiment was to parse the effects of stimulus separation and eccentricity on the positional deficit in amblyopia. METHODS: Subjects adjusted the positions of stimuli of varying separations on isoeccentric arcs. The task was simultaneous bisection and alignment of broadband, high-contrast, uncrowded targets with reference to central fixation. Ten strabismic am…

Cataract in retinopathy of prematurity - A review.

Preterm babies with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can become blind if they do not receive appropriate timely intervention. The presence of cataract in these individuals in addition to visual deprivation amblyopia, also delays proper screening, adequate treatment, and makes follow-up assessment difficult. Anatomical differences in these infants and amblyopia management, especially in unilateral cataract, are other important concerns, and hence, management of these cases with cataract and ROP is challenging. In this review, studies where ROP cases were associated with cataract, were evaluated…
