Bee pollen-induced anaphylaxis has rarely been reported, and its allergenic components have never been studied. This report describes a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction in an 8-year-old male patient that occurred shortly after intra-abdominal contact with latex surgical gloves. Follow-up skin testing as an outpatient revealed a positive reaction to both latex and atracurium while the other anesthetic agents tested proved negative. Two cases of anaphylactic reactions that occurred in young children with clinical hypersensitivity to egg protein after their exposure to a pavlova mix (which contains powdered egg-white) are described. The exposure took place when a packet of pavlova mix was opened and its contents were transferred into a bowl by adults. Although the children were in the same room, no direct contact was made. Protamine is used widely to reverse the anticoagulant effects of heparin and to delay the absorption of insulin. Although adverse reactions to protamine are reported infrequently and are usually mild, we recently observed the first fatal case of type I anaphylaxis resulting from protamine.
