BACKGROUND: The current evidence about anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) during pregnancy remains elusive in China. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of anemia and IDA and their risk factors in Chinese pregnant women.
METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional survey of pregnant women was conducted during their antenatal visits. Using a multi-stage sampling method, 24 hospitals from 16 provinces across China were selected. Structured questionnaires were administered to collect information from participants and to extract clinical data from electronic medical records.…

BACKGROUND: Contemporary literature suggests that anemia may be a risk factor for the development of pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) and associated with poorer visual outcomes. However, literature describing the association is limited, and whether laboratory testing for anemia should be done during a PTC work-up is frequently debated among neuro-ophthalmologists.
METHODS: International Classification of Diseases-10 codes were used to identify patients with PTC from the SOURCE database. Patients with PTC were matched for age, sex, and race with controls. Relative rates of anemia were compared betwee…

Anemia is one of the most common complications observed in preterm infants. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is a standard therapy for treating neonatal anemia, but it is not without risk. Several studies suggest that while transfusion may reverse anemia, it can also cause inflammation and impaired barrier function in the developing intestine, potentially leading to necrotizing enterocolitis. However, the features of the developing immune system in a preterm infant, along with the characteristics of the transfused RBC unit that contribute to neonatal complications, have been difficult to defin…
