Modelling mammalian implantation in vitro.

Embryo implantation is a major reproductive bottleneck, requiring precise spatiotemporal coordination between the embryo and the maternal endometrium. This intricate communication is governed by synchronised molecular signalling, mechanical cues, and endocrine regulation. Although some of these mechanisms are conserved across mammals, marked species differences in the degree of invasiveness of implantation, decidualisation, and placental morphology, as well as in embryonic developmental milestones, limit comparative understanding of early pregnancy across species. Moreover, ethical restriction

Modulating the Microbiota-gut-brain Axis: A Promising Strategy for Alzheimer's Disease Prevention and Management.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder evident by cognitive decline and neuropathological hallmarks such as amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau protein hyperphosphorylation. Recent evidence links gut microbiota dysbiosis to AD pathogenesis through the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA), a complex bidirectional communication system entailing neural, immune, and metabolic pathways. This study aims to explore the mechanistic relationship between gut microbiota alterations and AD development and to assess the therapeutic potential of microbiota modulation through dietary, pr

Development and Implementation of a One Health Point of Entry Checklist in Iraq and Jordan.

INTRODUCTION: Points of entry (POEs) serve as critical hubs in national security efforts, facilitating trade and travel while mitigating threats such as transboundary zoonotic diseases. Given the multisectoral nature of One Health (OH) challenges at POEs, there is a need for a systematic tool to assess preparedness and response capabilities. Existing evaluation frameworks, such as the International Health Regulations (IHR) Monitoring and Evaluation Framework and the World Organisation for Animal Health Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway, lack comprehensive OH-specific guidance ta

Piloting an Information and Communication Technology Tool to Help Addressing the Challenge of Antimicrobial Resistance in Low-Income Countries.

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock drives antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR has a significant impact on public health. While several interventions have been used to address this challenge, few have utilized Information and Communication Technology (ICT) approaches. The objective of this study was to pilot and assess an ICT system to monitor the use of veterinary drugs and disseminate information to farmers in peri-urban smallholder poultry systems in Kenya. Methods: The system was developed in collaboration with the stakeholders. It captures drug sales in veterinary

Cadmium-Induced Bone Toxicity: Deciphering the Osteoclast-Osteoblast Crosstalk.

Cadmium (Cd), a pervasive environmental and industrial toxicant, bioaccumulates and exerts severe detrimental effects on skeletal integrity across diverse animal species. Cd-induced bone injury manifests as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and increased fracture risk, posing significant health and welfare concerns for wildlife and livestock inhabiting contaminated ecosystems. The pathogenesis hinges critically on the disruption of bone remodeling, a tightly regulated process orchestrated by osteoclasts (OCs) responsible for bone resorption and osteoblasts (OBs) responsible for bone formation. This

Exosomal Communication Between Cumulus-Oocyte Complexes and Granulosa Cells: A New Molecular Axis for Oocyte Competence in Human-Assisted Reproduction.

Exosomal microRNAs (ex-miRs), encapsulated in extracellular vesicles (EVs), play a vital role in facilitating paracrine communication among granulosa cells (GCs), cumulus cells (CCs), and the oocyte inside follicular fluid (FF). These small non-coding RNAs are crucial for regulating folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation, and early embryonic development via modulating intracellular signaling networks. Dysregulation o has been associated with reproductive disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), and inadequate ovarian response (POR), impacting oocyte

Viral haemorrhagic fevers in the Middle East.

Viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are a group of infectious, devastating and severe diseases caused by enveloped single-stranded RNA viruses. The endemicity, emergence or re-emergence of different VHF viruses and lack of vaccines and antiviral therapy for most VHFs result in a significant global threat. Most VHF viruses are restricted to specific parts of the world, and the dramatic expansion of their geographical distribution beyond their original habitats would greatly affect global public health. In the past few decades alone, several outbreaks have affected the Middle East, a part of the wo

Establishment and characterization of an oral gerbil model for a non-mouse-adapted enterovirus 71 strain.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the major pathogens causing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) with neurological and systemic complications worldwide, and it is mostly discovered in infants and young children. It is of great significance to establish suitable animal models of EV71 infection on research of distribution and pathogenesis of the virus. In this study, we established a successful infection of a non-mouse-adapted isolate of EV71 via oral route in 7-day-old Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), all of which were paralyzed and died within 10 days post infection. Analysis of virus

Increased sociability and gene expression of oxytocin and its receptor in the brains of rats affected prenatally by valproic acid.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by the disruption of social interactions. Autistic animal models play a crucial role in neurophysiologic research on this disorder. One of these models is based on rats that have been prenatally treated with valproic acid - VPA rats. The aim of our study performed with this model was to investigate changes in sociability and gene expression of neuropeptides and receptors involved in regulating social behaviour. We focused on gene expression in the hypothalamus, where the neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) are produce

Risk factors influencing Coxiella burnetii seropositivity in water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) populations of Egypt's Nile Delta.

This study investigated the seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in buffaloes across several governorates in Egypt's Nile Delta. No significant variation was observed between regions (P > 0.05), although the highest prevalence was recorded in Kafr El-Sheikh (15.5%) and the lowest in Menofia (9.1%). While sex was not statistically significant, females showed a higher seroprevalence (12.4%) than males (9%). Age had a significant impact, with buffaloes over 8 years of age showed a higher prevalence (21.6%) compared to the younger age groups. Tick infestation was also significantly associated with

A systematic review of the microbial community in taiassuids: a One Health approach.

Collared and white-lipped peccaries are sympatric and are distributed in most of South America and in the humid tropical forests of Mexico and Central America. Historically, these species have been used as a source of protein by traditional and/or indigenous human communities, but currently they have been used for legal consumption in different countries. Thus, there has been greater interaction between these wild species and domestic animals and humans, enabling microbial interactions between different niches. The present study presents a systematic review of the literature on the microbial c

Changes in microbial community structure during pig manure composting and its relationship to the fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes.

Animal manure containing veterinary antibiotics is a significant source of microbial antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Composting of animal manure with wheat straw and sawdust was explored as a means to reduce ARGs load in the final material. The effects of ciprofloxacin, oxytetracycline, sulfamerazine on the bacterial community composition, and how this then affected the removal of seven tetracycline resistance genes (TARGs), four sulfonamide resistance genes (SARGs), and two fluoroquinolone resistance genes (QARGs) were investigated. Treatments receiving either ciprofloxacin or the three m

Human foodborne listeriosis in England and Wales, 1981 to 2015.

Almost all cases of human listeriosis are foodborne, however the proportion where specific exposures are identified is small. Between 1981 and 2015, 5252 human listeriosis cases were reported in England and Wales. The purpose of this study was to summarise data where consumption of specific foods was identified with transmission and these comprised 11 sporadic cases and 17 outbreaks. There was a single outbreak in the community of 378 cases (7% of the total) which was associated with pâté consumption and 112 cases (2% of the total) attributed to specific foods in all the other incidents. The p

Fecal virome composition of migratory wild duck species.

The fecal virome comprises a complex diversity of eukaryotic viruses, phages and viruses that infect the host. However, little is known about the intestinal community of viruses that is present in wild waterfowl, and the structure of this community in wild ducks has not yet been studied. The fecal virome compositions of six species of wild dabbling ducks and one species of wild diving duck were thus analyzed. Fecal samples were collected directly from the rectums of 60 ducks donated by hunters. DNA and RNA virus particles were purified and sequenced using the MiSeq Illumina platform. The reads

OXA-48-like carbapenemases producing Enterobacteriaceae in different niches.

The emergence of carbapenem-resistant enterobacterial species poses a serious threat to public health worldwide. OXA-48-type carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D β-lactamases are widely distributed among Enterobacteriaceae, with significant geographical differences. To date, 11 OXA-48-like variants have been identified, with classical OXA-48 being the most widespread. These enzymes show high-level hydrolytic activity against penicillins and low-level hydrolysis towards carbapenems. Since the first description of the OXA-48 carbapenemase in Turkey, bacterial strains producing the enzyme have been ext

Can Scat Analysis Describe the Feeding Habits of Big Cats? A Case Study with Jaguars (Panthera onca) in Southern Pantanal, Brazil.

Large cats feeding habits have been studied through two main methods: scat analysis and the carcasses of prey killed by monitored animals. From November 2001 to April 2004, we studied jaguar predation patterns using GPS telemetry location clusters on a cattle ranch in southern Pantanal. During this period, we recorded 431 carcasses of animals preyed upon by monitored jaguars. Concurrently, we collected 125 jaguar scats opportunistically. We compared the frequencies of prey found through each method. We also compared the prey communities using Bray-Curtis similarity coefficient. These compariso

Impotence in the boar 2: Clinical and anatomical studies on impotent boars.

Six boars were deficient in penile erection and incapable of intromission, but produced ejaculates containing spermatozoa. In five of these boars impotence was primary, but one boar had served normally for two seasons before showing secondary impotence. Sexual libido was good in two, moderate in two and poor in two of these animals. Post mortem studies on the reproductive tracts revealed no abnormalities except in the penes. In one of the boars with primary impotence, the penis showed an abnormal type of spiral deviation during simulated erection, but there was no abnormality in the venous dra

Using community-based crime scripting to elucidate pangolin scale trafficking.

Illegal wildlife trade is accelerating rates of biodiversity loss and undermining conservation. Crime scripting systematically details the crime commission process, informs prevention activities, and is usually based on experts' perspectives. We conducted community-based crime scripting of pangolin scale trade in Cameroon, July-December 2024 in 22 communities in Cameroon (n = 152 participants). Using NVivo 15.1.1 for analysis of perspectives, we identified six enabling conditions for trade and four categories of crime prevention activities. Identifying the crime commission process structure an
