The effects of experimental irrigation on plant productivity, insect abundance and the non-breeding season performance of a migratory songbird.

Migratory bird populations are often limited by food during the non-breeding season. Correlative evidence suggests that food abundance on territories varies among years in relation to rainfall, which affects plant productivity and arthropod biomass. At the Font Hill Nature Preserve in Jamaica, we used an irrigation experiment to test the hypothesis that rainfall affects the condition of wintering American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) via intermediate effects on plant productivity and arthropod abundance. Experimental plots were irrigated in late February and early March to simulate a mid-se

Biological clocks and regulation of seasonal reproduction and migration in birds.

Timekeeping is important at two levels: to time changes in physiology and behavior within each day and within each year. For the former, birds have a system of at least three independent circadian clocks present in the retina of the eyes, the pineal gland, and the hypothalamus. This differs from the situation in mammals in which the input, pacemaker, and output are localized in different structures. Each bird clock interacts with at least one other clock, and together, they appear to form a centralized clock system that keeps daily time. These clocks have a powerful endogenous component, and t

Birds, migration and emerging zoonoses: west nile virus, lyme disease, influenza A and enteropathogens.

Wild birds are important to public health because they carry emerging zoonotic pathogens, either as a reservoir host or by dispersing infected arthropod vectors. In addition, bird migration provides a mechanism for the establishment of new endemic foci of disease at great distances from where an infection was acquired. Birds are central to the epidemiology of West Nile virus (WNV) because they are the main amplifying host of the virus in nature. The initial spread of WNV in the U.S. along the eastern seaboard coincided with a major bird migration corridor. The subsequent rapid movement of the

[ARID1B Gene Deletion Promotes the Proliferation, Migration and Invasion
of NSCLC Cells].

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of the switch/sucrose nonfermentable (SWI/SNF) chromatin-remodeling complex are closely related to various cancers, and ARID1B (AT-rich interaction domain 1B) is one of the core subunits of the SWI/SNF complex. Mutations or copy number deletions of the ARID1B gene are associated with impaired DNA damage response and altered chromatin accessibility. However, whether ARID1B deficiency affects the proliferation, migration and invasion abilities of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and its molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aims to reveal the

Myelin-Independent Therapeutic Potential of Canine Glial-Restricted Progenitors Transplanted in Mouse Model of Dysmyelinating Disease.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of glia contributes to the deterioration of the central nervous system in a wide array of neurological disorders, thus global replacement of glia is very attractive. Human glial-restricted precursors (hGRPs) transplanted intraventricularly into neonatal mice extensively migrated and rescued the lifespan in half of the studied mice, whereas mouse GRPs (mGRPs) presented no therapeutic benefit. We studied in the same experimental setting canine GRPs (cGRP) to determine whether their therapeutic potential falls between hGRPs and mGRPs. Additional motivation for the selectio

Autism-Like Behavior and Epigenetic Changes Associated with Autism as Consequences of In Utero Exposure to Environmental Pollutants in a Mouse Model.

We tested the hypothesis that in utero exposure to heavy metals increases autism-like behavioral phenotypes in adult animals and induces epigenetic changes in genes that have roles in the etiology of autism. Mouse dams were treated with cadmium, lead, arsenate, manganese, and mercury via drinking water from gestational days (E) 1-10. Valproic acid (VPA) injected intraperitoneally once on (E) 8.5 served as a positive control. Young male offspring were tested for behavioral deficits using four standardized behavioral assays. In this study, in utero exposure to heavy metals resulted in multiple b

Bacteriologically stressed animal model of new closed catheter drainage system with microbicidal outlet tube.

We have used a catheterized rabbit model to test a newly developed catheter drainage system that incorporates a microbicidal outlet tube. In these tests, this new system was compared with a currently marketed closed drainage system, with daily challenge at the outlet tube using an auxotrophically marked uropathogenic strain of Escherichia coli. In the control series (silicone catheter connected to a standard drainage bag via a tamper-evidence seal) the challenge organism developed upstream biofilm colonization of the luminal surfaces of the catheter and drainage system that was complete in 4.6

Cell-mediated immune response to fractionated products of Actinomyces viscosus cultures.

Since bacterial invasion of host tissue has not been shown to occur in the course of periodontitis, many investigators believe that products released from dental plaque microorganisms enter the tissue and elicit a series of host responses leading to the pathological condition. This study, therefore, was designed to explore the possibility that cell-free products isolated from Actinomyces viscosus cultures are able to induce cell-mediated immunological responses in experimental animals. Hartley strain guinea pigs were sensitized with concentrated cell-free products of A. viscosus culture supern

Collagen sponge scaffolds loaded with Trichostatin A pretreated BMSCs-derived exosomes regulate macrophage polarization to promote skin wound healing.

The process of wound healing includes the inflammatory stage, which plays an important role. Macrophages can promote inflammatory response and also promote angiogenesis, wound contraction and tissue remodeling required for wound healing. It is crucial to promote macrophages to polarize from M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype to M2 anti-inflammatory phenotype at a critical time for the quality of wound healing. Because mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes have broad therapeutic prospects in the field of tissue repair and regeneration, in this study, we explored whether trichostatin A pretreated bo

Human Infection with the Nematode Gongylonema sp.: A Case Report from Bulgaria.

We report a case of infection with the zoonotic nematode Gongylonema sp. in a 24-year-old woman from Varna, Bulgaria. Two days before seeking medical attention, the patient had noticed a filamentous mass in her buccal mucosa that migrated when touched with the tongue. She manually removed a thread-like worm from the mucosa near her lower lip. Albendazole was prescribed for three days. The patient had no history of travelling abroad or contact with animals. To our knowledge, this is the sixth case that has been reported in the country.

Old world blowflies in the new world.

Human activity, particularly migration and the export of live animals, can provide vehicles for the dispersal of many parasites and their vectors. These movements, often overlooked until too late, provide potential for epidemic outbreaks and can profoundly alter accepted ideas on the geographic distribution and epidemiological status of particular species. In this review, Brian Laurence discusses the recent rapid spread of blowflies into the americas; these conspicious green flies transport a variety of gastro-intestinal pathogens between their favoured environments of latrines and exposed foo

Atypical Neurogenesis, Astrogliosis, and Excessive Hilar Interneuron Loss Are Associated with the Development of Post-Traumatic Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant risk factor for post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the injury-induced epileptogenesis are under investigation. The dentate gyrus-a structure that is highly susceptible to injury-has been implicated in the evolution of seizure development. METHODS: Utilizing the murine unilateral focal control cortical impact (CCI) injury, we evaluated seizure onset using 24/7 EEG video analysis at 2-4 months post-injury. Cellular changes in the dentate gyrus and hilus of the hippocampus were quantified by u

Chemokine CCL19 promotes type 2 T-cell differentiation and allergic airway inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma is driven largely by allergen-specific TH2 cells, which develop in regional lymph nodes on the interaction of naive CD4+ T cells with allergen-bearing dendritic cells that migrate from the lung. This migration event is dependent on CCR7 and its chemokine ligand, CCL21. However, is has been unclear whether the other CCR7 ligand, CCL19, has a role in allergic airway disease. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to define the role of CCL19 in TH2 differentiation and allergic airway disease. METHODS: Ccl19-deficient mice were studied in an animal model of allergic asthma. Den

The role of adenosine A1 receptor in the peripheral tramadol's effect in the temporomandibular joint of rats.

Peripheral tramadol's delivery in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) leads to significant analgesic outcomes and inflammatory process's resolvent actions. Mechanistically, these properties are apart from the opioid system. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms behind these effects are still unclear. Therefore, the present study investigated the hypothesis that adenosine A1 receptors are involved in the tramadol-induced analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in the TMJ. Animals were pretreated with an intra-TMJ injection of DPCPX (antagonist of A1 receptor) or tramadol and subsequent nocicepti

Intracerebral Transplantation of BDNF-overexpressing Human Neural Stem Cells (HB1.F3.BDNF) Promotes Migration, Differentiation and Functional Recovery in a Rodent Model of Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by abnormally expanded CAG repeats in the huntingtin gene. The huntingtin gene mutation leads to the progressive degeneration of striatal GABAergic medium spiny neurons (MSN) and reduces the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in HD patient's brain. BDNF is an essential neurotrophic factor for the cortico-striatal synaptic activity and the survival of GABAergic neurons. In this study, we transplanted BDNF-overexpressing human neural stem cells (HB1.F3.BDNF) into the contra-lateral side of unilat

Astrocytic endogenous glial cell derived neurotrophic factor production is enhanced by bone marrow stromal cell transplantation in the ischemic boundary zone after stroke in adult rats.

Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) facilitate functional recovery in rats after focal ischemic attack. Growing evidence suggests that the secretion of various bioactive factors underlies BMSCs' beneficial effects. This study investigates the expression of glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in the ischemic hemisphere with or without BMSC administration. Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion followed by an injection of 3 x 10(6) BMSCs (n = 11) or phosphate-buffered saline (n = 10) into the tail vein 24 h later. Animals were sacrificed seven da

Effect of plant neutrophil elastase inhibitor on leucocyte migration, adhesion and cytokine release in inflammatory conditions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The serine and cysteine peptidase inhibitor, BbCI, isolated from Bauhinia bauhinioides seeds, is similar to the classical plant Kunitz inhibitor, STI, but lacks disulphide bridges and methionine residues. BbCI blocks activity of the serine peptidases, elastase (K(iapp) 5.3 nM) and cathepsin G (K(iapp) 160.0 nM), and the cysteine peptidase cathepsin L (K(iapp) 0.2 nM). These three peptidases play important roles in the inflammatory process. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We measured the effects of BbCI on paw oedema and on leucocyte accumulation in pleurisy, both induced by car

Delayed treatment with a p53 inhibitor enhances recovery in stroke brain.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral ischemia can activate endogenous reparative processes, such as proliferation of endogenous neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in the subventricular zone (SVZ). Most of these new cells die shortly after injury. The purpose of this study was to examine a novel strategy for treatment of stroke at 1 week after injury by enhancing the survival of ischemia-induced endogenous NPCs in SVZ. METHODS: Adult rats were subjected to a 90-minutes middle cerebral artery occlusion. A p53 inhibitor pifithrin-alpha (PFT-alpha) was administered to stroke rats from days 6 to 9 after middle cerebra

[Epidemiologic characteristics of diphyllobothriasis in the lower Amur River valley].

Results of epidemiological studies of diphyllobothriasis in the Lower part of the Amur watershed have demonstrated that the disease nosogeographic range covered the entire region. Potential risk of invasion of humans and animals by the tapeworms exists all over the aforementioned area. Season of invasion coincides with the period of migration of calico and humpback salmon which are additional hosts of Diphyllobothriidae. Invasion occurs outside the Amur freshwater area; thus the real disease foci are absent in the Lower part of the Amur watershed. This is due to the fact that the disease is no
