Antibiotic treatment for urinary tract infections in pediatric patients.

This review focuses on antibiotic treatment of acute urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children who are neurologically and anatomically intact. Neonates younger than 28 days with a febrile UTI should be hospitalized, given supportive care and treated with parenteral amoxicillin and cefotaxime. Following a good response to 3 to 4 days of parenteral antibacterial therapy, outpatient treatment with an oral antibiotic should be given to complete 14 days of therapy. Infants from 28 days to 3 months who appear clinically ill with a febrile UTI should be hospitalized, receive supportive care and par

A National Implementation Project to Prevent Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection in Nursing Home Residents.

IMPORTANCE: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (UTI) in nursing home residents is a common cause of sepsis, hospital admission, and antimicrobial use leading to colonization with multidrug-resistant organisms. OBJECTIVE: To develop, implement, and evaluate an intervention to reduce catheter-associated UTI. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A large-scale prospective implementation project was conducted in community-based nursing homes participating in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Safety Program for Long-Term Care. Nursing homes across 48 states, Washington DC, and

An update on alternative therapy for Escherichia coli causing urinary tract infections; a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common type of nosocomial infection and severe health issues because of the difficulties and frequent recurrence. Today, alternative methods such as sonodynamic therapy (SDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT) and herbal materials use for treating infections like UTI in many countries. METHOD: We conducted searches of the biomedical databases (Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of sciences) to identify related studies from 2008 to 2023. RESULT: SDT aims to use ultrasound to activate a sonosensitizer, which causes a biological effect by r

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and device-related nosocomial infections: implications, trends, and potential approaches for control.

For many years, device-associated infections and particularly device-associated nosocomial infections have been of considerable concern. Recently, this concern was heightened as a result of increased antibiotic resistance among the common causal agents of nosocomial infections, the appearance of new strains which are intrinsically resistant to the antibiotics of choice, and the emerging understanding of the role biofilms may play in device-associated infections and the development of increased antibiotic resistance. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans are consistently identified as som

Antibiotic regimen and route of administration do not alter rates of urinary tract infection after intravesical botulinum toxin injection for overactive bladder.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Guidelines vary on antibiotic prophylaxis for onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) treatment for overactive bladder (OAB). Our primary objective was to determine whether any prophylactic regimen is more effective in preventing urinary tract infection (UTI) after Botox. The secondary objective was to identify prophylactic practice patterns among female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) providers of different training backgrounds as well as general urologists. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a retrospective cohort study on urinary retention after Bo

Purple urine bag syndrome in palliative care.

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a rare condition characterised by urine discolouration. The management of PUBS remains controversial. Four females (mean age 84.5±9.7 years) with palliative conditions (two cancer and two non-cancer cases) presenting PUBS were identified. Urine bags were changed in all cases. Urinary catheters were changed in three cases. Oral antibiotics were prescribed in two cases and used in one case. Urine discolouration was resolved in all cases. One patient (without antibiotic treatment) died on day 5 after presentation of PUBS. Three patients (one out of three cases

[Complications of urinary calculi].

Urinary stones is a frequent disease whose renal complications can engage both functional and vital prognosis. We report 769 complicated cases observed 10 years. The diagnosis was made by intravenous urography and ultrasonography. 607 cases were mechanical complications, 582 hydronephrosis, 25 anuria, 262 were infectious complications, 82 chronic pyelonephritis, 60 pyonephrosis, 10 perinephric abscess. Treatment included adapted antibiotic therapy, ureteral catheter in case of anuria ; surgical extraction of the stone nephrectomy was performed in 100 patients. Results were generally good. 9 pa

An assessment of antiseptic bladder washout solutions using a physical model of the catheterized bladder.

The antibacterial activity of six antiseptic solutions formulated for use in bladder washout procedures has been examined in a simple model of the catheterized bladder. The experiments were carried out under conditions which examined the efficacy of the formulations against organisms that had recently contaminated the bladder urine. At cell densities of 10(4) cfu ml-1 all the solutions tested proved effective in eliminating bacteria from the bladder urine. Under conditions simulating heavy contamination (10(7)-10(8) cfu ml-1) however, only mandelic acid (1% w/v) eliminated the range of bacteri

Safety of dapsone as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia prophylaxis in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients with allergy to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety of dapsone prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in patients with prior intolerance to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study in the categorical human immunodeficiency virus out-patient program of a university hospital. Patients who had filled prescriptions for dapsone at our pharmacy between January 1991 and April 1994 were evaluated and 75 patients were found eligible for analysis. RESULTS: The overall incidence of adverse events (AE) in our study cohort was 39%. The most common AEs were anemia (23%

Pathophysiology and Management of Long-term Complications After Transvaginal Urethral Diverticulectomy.

Female urethral diverticulum (UD) is a rare and benign condition that presents as an epithelium-lined outpouching of the urethra. It has various symptoms, of which incontinence in the form of postmicturition dribble is the most common. The gold standard for the diagnosis of UD is magnetic resonance imaging, and the treatment of choice is transvaginal diverticulectomy. Despite the high success rate of transvaginal diverticulectomy, postoperative complications such as de novo stress urinary incontinence (SUI), recurrence, urethrovaginal fistula, recurrent urinary tract infections, newly-onset ur

The Significance of Age and Causative Bacterial Morphology in the Choice of an Antimicrobial Agent to Treat Acute Uncomplicated Cystitis.

Differentiating patients by age and causative bacterial morphology might aid in making the appropriate choice of antimicrobial agent when treating acute uncomplicated cystitis. In this retrospective analysis, the non-susceptibility rates of the causative bacteria to cefcapene-pivoxil (CFPN-PI) and levofloxacin (LVFX) were determined after dividing patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis by age group (15-54 and 55-74 years old) and by bacterial morphology: gram-positive cocci (GPC) or gram-negative rod (GNR). The overall non-susceptibility rates for CFPN-PI and LVFX were 19.4% and 15.3%, res

[Urogenital Myiasis Caused by Psychoda albipennis (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a Woman in Siirt].

Urogenital myiasis cases occurring with the settlement of larvae of flies belonging to the order Diptera are facultative and are rarely encountered in humans. In this study, urogenital myiasis caused by Psychoda albipennis in a 20-year-old female patient was presented. The patient was admitted to our hospital with complaints of nausea, vomiting, and dysuria and claimed that she saw motile larvae in her urine. Five larvae collected from the patient's urine were microscopically examined, and they were identified as fourth-stage larvae of Psychoda albipennis. Complaints of the patient ceased afte
