L-Dopa induced dyskinesia (LID) is a debilitating side effect of dopamine replacement therapy for Parkinson's Disease. The mechanistic underpinnings of LID remain obscure. Here we report that diminished sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling in the basal ganglia caused by the degeneration of midbrain dopamine neurons facilitates the formation and expression of LID. We described a modified Yamane technique for simplifying trailing haptic insertion in aphakia correction. In Yamane intrascleral intraocular lens (IOL) implantation technique, trailing haptic implantation is challenging for many surgeons. This modification provides an easier and safer way of trailing haptic insertion into the needle tip and decreases the possibility of bending or breaking the trailing haptic.

A 55-year old pseudophakic man with megalocornea presented with a progressive monocular diplopia. On examination the patient was found to have subluxation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL)/capsular-bag-complex. Surgical removal of the complex was performed resulting in aphakic status. The patient was subsequently fitted with a custom contact lens for aphakia, with successful visual rehabilitation.

The anterior segment dysgeneses are a broad group of heterogeneous disorders characterized by developmental abnormalities of the anterior segment of the eye, including primary congenital aphakia, Peters sequence, aniridia, and Axenfeld-Rieger spectrum. These conditions can have overlapping phenotypes and both genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity. This article provides a strategy for both phenotyping and then genotyping using a targeted stepwise approach.

When having compared extracapsular and intracapsular, they stress the double problem of prevention and treatment of endophthalmia and of optical correction of aphakia at a health centre.

In less than fifteen years old children, thirty nine non traumatic retinal detachments are reported. Their poor prognosis is attributed to the late diagnosis, the early age occurrence, the combination with an ocular pathology (congenital aphakia--myopia--hereditary vitreoretinal degeneration) present on the first examination. Prophylaxis of the fellow eye is recommended in order to avoid the alarming occurrence of bilateral detachment.

The history of prostheses for presbyopia is reviewed with an account of the development of variable focus spectacles. They have fluid-filled cells, with one flexible wall on the back of the base lens. The curvature of the flexible wall can be varied by operating a bellows in one side-arm. Their use for presbyopia, aphakia, and glaucoma is considered. The spectacles are believed to have reached a stage where they are ready for commercial production.

We determined the clinical characteristics of cataract in 133 patients with the Stickler syndrome. Cataracts of various types or aphakia were found in 115 of 231 eyes (49.8%) studied. The most frequent and distinctive lesions, described as wedge and fleck cataracts, accounted for 40 of the 93 cataracts (43.0%) observed. These distinctive opacities may serve as a clinical marker for the Stickler syndrome and facilitate early diagnosis.

Although both the extended-wear contact lens and the intraocular lens are under intense clinical investigation, years will be required to collect sufficient data for valid comparisons of their risk factors. Meanwhile, a rational appraisal of risks associated with both therapeutic alternatives should be considered, with decisions based on risks or benefits for each patient. The factors to be considered in comparing these alternatives for the correction of aphakia are discussed.

Spot diagrams are computer generated by skew ray tracing for a model of the human eye which is corrected by means of a contact lens and spectacle lens. An examination of the images of a point source of light at 0 degrees and 20 degrees off the optical axis of the eye-lens system are shown. For the correction of aphakia, the performance of the contact lens is shown to be superior in off-axis optical performance.
