Exploring consequences of short- and long-term deafness on speech production: a lip-tube perturbation study.

Studies have reported strong links between speech production and perception. We aimed to evaluate the role of long- and short-term auditory feedback alteration on speech production. Eleven adults with normal hearing (controls) and 17 cochlear implant (CI) users (7 pre-lingually deaf and 10 post-lingually deaf adults) were recruited. Short-term auditory feedback deprivation was induced by turning off the CI or by providing masking noise. Acoustic and articulatory measures were obtained during the production of /u/, with and without a tube inserted between the lips (perturbation), and with and w

Correlations between malocclusions and dyslalias.

AIM: This was to evaluate the relationship between malocclusions and dyslalias and to plan a multidisciplinary approach between orthodontics and speech therapy. STUDY DESIGN: 880 children (448 males and 432 females) ranging in age from 6 to 10 years were examined at the Department of Orthodontics at Milan University to determine if a relationship between malocclusions and dyslalia exists and their correlations. METHODS: The children were examined by a speech therapist and an orthodontist. An examination of the occlusion and phonetics was conducted and compared with an age-matched control gro

Management of the hypodynamic velopharynx.

Velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) resulting from an adynamic or hypodynamic velopharynx is an unusual pathology that poses vexing management problems for the Cleft Palate team. Correction of VPD has the potential for airway compromise. Endoscopically, this pathology is recognized by a large velopharyngeal (VP) gap size, which demonstrates little or no dynamic activity of the posterior or lateral pharyngeal walls nor of the velum in response to speech tasks or connected speech. Because of a paucity of literature defining the entity, a retrospective review of 175 patients who were treated for VPD

What factors place children with speech sound disorders at risk for reading problems?

PURPOSE: To identify weaknesses in print awareness and phonological processing that place children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) at increased risk for reading difficulties. METHOD: Language, literacy, and phonological skills of 3 groups of preschool-age children were compared: a group of 68 children with SSDs, a group of 68 peers with normal speech matched on receptive vocabulary, and a group of 68 peers with normal speech and language. RESULTS: The SSD group demonstrated impairments in expressive phonological awareness (ts = 3.45 to 8.17, ps < .001, effect size [ES] = 0.51 to 1.04), re

A pilot study shows the positive effects of continuous airway pressure for treating hypernasal speech in children with infantile-onset Pompe disease.

Children with infantile-onset Pompe disease (IOPD) demonstrate hypernasality. This study aimed to evaluate whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) training may reduce hypernasality in children with IOPD. Five children with IOPD were enrolled in a single-subject experimental design of type A-B-A'. The intervention comprised an 8-week, 6-day-per-week regimen of CPAP training at home. Participants continued traditional speech therapy once per week throughout the 24-week study duration. The outcome measurements included the degree of hypernasality (DH), the percentage of consonants corr

Production of tongue twisters by speakers with partial glossectomy.

Abstract A partial glossectomy can affect speech production. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the presence of a tumour as well as the glossectomy surgery on the patients' production of tongue twisters with the sounds [t] and [k]. Fifteen patients with tongue cancer and 10 healthy controls took part in the study. The outcome measures were the patients' speech acceptability, rate of errors, the time needed to produce the tongue twisters, pause duration between item repetitions and the tongue shape during the production of the consonants [t] and [k] before and after surgery

Cosmetic and cognitive outcomes of positional plagiocephaly treatment.

PURPOSE: Positional plagiocephaly is an acquired deformation of an intrinsically normal infant skull by sustained or excessive extrinsic forces. Non-surgical techniques include counter-positioning, supervised prone time and orthotic molding for more refractory cases. Long-term effects of positional plagiocephaly on development remain undefined, and this study evaluated cosmetic and cognitive outcomes of plagiocephaly management. METHOD: Surveys were administered to parents of patients treated for positional plagiocephaly through the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Categorical response

Dyslexia: advances in clinical and imaging studies.

The aim of this report is to describe the characteristics of Japanese dyslexia, and to demonstrate several of our studies about the extraction of these characteristic and their neurophysiological and neuroimaging abnormalities, as well as advanced studies of phonological awareness and the underlying neural substrate. Based on these results, we have proposed a 2-step approach for remedial education (e-learning web site: http://www.dyslexia-koeda.jp/). The first step is decoding, which decreases reading errors, and the second is vocabulary learning, which improves reading fluency. This 2-step ap

Does the speech of Turkish-speaking phonologically disordered children differ from that of children speaking other languages?

How phonological disorders should be categorized in Turkish children remained vague for a long period of time due to a lack of normative studies. This paper reports the phonological systems of 70 phonologically disordered children, aged 4;0-8;0, in comparison with the results of a normative study of 665 Turkish-speaking children, aged 1;3-8;0. The current focus is on two aspects of development, mainly the differences between disordered and normal consonant acquisition and phonological error patterns from both longitudinal and cross-sectional data. The second concern of the paper is to sub-clas

From birth to maturity: a group of patients who have completed their protocol management. Part II. Isolated cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of the cleft palate patient from birth to completion of treatment continues to present a formidable challenge to the plastic surgeon. The management by multidisciplinary teams is well established, but long-term outcome data of cases managed by protocol remain sparse. This study continues to present the results of the Australian Craniofacial Unit of patients with isolated cleft palate who completed protocol management at the unit under the care of the senior author (D.J.D.) during the 29-year period from 1974 to 2003. METHODS: A retrospective study of the out

[Abnormal movements in a case of extrapontine myelinolysis. Review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION AND CLINICAL CASE: We present a case of extra-pontine myelinolysis caused by acute hypernatraemia in which a complex picture of late onset extrapyramdial features, choreodystonia and parkinsonism developed. Repeated physical examinations, neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies using magnetic resonance all indicated an extra-pontine site of the lesions, which symmetrically affected the striate and to a lesser extent both thalami. We review the relevant literature available and analyze the cases described as having abnormal movements associated with a myelinolytic syndrome. CO

Addressing Phonological Deficit in Primary Progressive Aphasia With Behavioral Intervention and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

PURPOSE: Despite recognition of the underlying phonological impairment observed in the logopenic and nonfluent variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA), there is relatively little treatment research directed toward strengthening phonological skills. In this study, we focused on remediating phonological deficits in logopenic and nonfluent PPA. Specifically, we hypothesized that behavioral intervention intended to strengthen phonological manipulation skills and sound-letter correspondences-coupled with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-would improve language abilities, especial

Topological properties of the resting-state functional network in nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate children after speech rehabilitation.

Speech therapy has been widely used as an essential therapy for compensatory articulation errors in nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate patients. We sought to identify potential biomarkers of nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate children after speech rehabilitation based on resting-state fMRI and graph theory techniques. We scanned 28 nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate and 28 typically developing children for resting-state fMRI on a 3T MRI scanner. Functional networks were constructed, and their topological properties were obtained for assessing between-group differences (two-sample t-tests). Also,

Pacifiers, Thumb Sucking, Breastfeeding, and Bottle Use: Oral Sucking Habits of Children with and without Phonological Impairment.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to describe the nutritive and non-nutritive oral sucking habits (breastfeeding, bottle use, pacifier/dummy/soother use, thumb/finger sucking) of preschoolers with and without phonological impairment, and to determine whether oral sucking habits are associated with the presence and severity of phonological impairment. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 199 Australian English-speaking preschoolers with and without phonological impairment. Preschoolers' speech was directly assessed, and parents/caregivers completed a questionnaire. Chi-square (χ2) te

Evaluation of speech intelligibility after a secondary dehiscence operation using an artificial graft in patients with speech disorders after partial glossectomy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate speech intelligibility after a dehiscence operation using artificial grafts for patients with speech disorders after partial glossectomy that were caused by scars resulting from the primary operation. The subjects were six men and three women, who had had a partial glossectomy for tongue cancer followed by direct closure without reconstruction. They were operated on a second time operation to mobilise the residual tongue by dividing the cicatrix. An artificial graft was applied to the wound to maintain the dehiscence. Speech intelligibility was evaluat
