Large language models for pretreatment education in pediatric radiation oncology: A comparative evaluation study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pediatric radiotherapy patients and their parents are usually aware of their need for radiotherapy early on, but they meet with a radiation oncologist later in their treatment. Consequently, they search for information online, often encountering unreliable sources. Large language models (LLMs) have the potential to serve as an educational pretreatment tool, providing reliable answers to their questions. We aimed to evaluate the responses provided by generative pre-trained transformers (GPT), the most popular subgroup of LLMs, to questions about pediatric radiation oncol

Deep-learning denoising minimizes radiation exposure in neck CT beyond the limits of conventional reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Neck computed tomography (NCT) is essential for diagnosing suspected neck tumors and abscesses, but radiation exposure can be an issue. In conventional reconstruction techniques, limiting radiation dose comes at the cost of diminished diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of an AI-based denoising post-processing software solution in low-dose neck computer tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 01 September 2023 to 01 December 2023, we retrospectively included patients with clinically suspected neck tumors from the same single-source scanner. The

Impact of Surgeon-Radiation Oncology Dyads in Oral Cavity Cancer Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Multidisciplinary care is paramount in patient-specific decision making, especially as pertaining to oral cavity squamous cell cancer (OCSCC) treatment. Protracted surgery-postoperative-radiation (S-PORT) has a detrimental impact on OCSCC patients' outcomes. This study examined the impact of surgeon-radiation oncologist dyads on the treatment of OCSCC, focusing on S-PORT interval and disease specific outcomes. METHODS: All OCSCC patients treated in a tertiary cancer center between 2009 to 2017 were included. Patients were categorized into "dyad" and "nondyad" groups defined as whe

Establishment of human hematopoietic organoids for evaluation of hematopoietic injury and regeneration effect.

BACKGROUND: Human hematopoietic organoids have a wide application value for modeling human bone marrow diseases, such as acute hematopoietic radiation injury. However, the manufacturing of human hematopoietic organoids is an unaddressed challenge because of the complexity of hematopoietic tissues. METHODS: To manufacture hematopoietic organoids, we obtained CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) using stepwise induction and immunomagnetic bead-sorting. We then mixed these CD34+ HSPCs with niche-related cells in Gelatin-methacryloyl (GelMA

Cumulative Radiation Exposure and Lifetime Cancer Risk in Patients With Tetralogy of Fallot Requiring Early Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with tetralogy of Fallot and symptomatic cyanosis (sTOF) require early intervention, utilizing either a staged repair (SR) or primary repair (PR) approach. They are exposed to several sources of low-dose ionizing radiation, which may contribute to increased cancer risk. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare cumulative radiation exposure and associated lifetime attributable risk (LAR) of cancer between treatment strategies in sTOF. METHODS: Neonates with sTOF who underwent SR or PR from 2012 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed from the Congenital Cardiac

Technical note: Noninvasive monitoring of normal tissue radiation damage using spectral quantitative ultrasound spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: While radiation therapy (RT) is a critical component of breast cancer therapy and is known to decrease overall local recurrence rates, recent studies have shown that normal tissue radiation damage may increase recurrence risk. Fibrosis is a well-known consequence of RT, but the specific sequence of molecular and mechanical changes induced by RT remains poorly understood. PURPOSE: To improve cancer therapy outcomes, there is a need to understand the role of the irradiated tissue microenvironment in tumor recurrence. This study seeks to evaluate the use of spectral quantitative ultr

Lymphocyte sparing normal tissue effects in the clinic (LymphoTEC): A systematic review of dose constraint considerations to mitigate radiation-related lymphopenia in the era of immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-related lymphopenia has been associated with suboptimal tumor control rates leading to inferior survival outcomes. To date, no standardized dose constraints are available to limit radiation dose to resident and circulating lymphocyte populations. We undertook this systemic review of the literature to provide a synopsis of the dosimetric predictors of radiation-related lymphopenia in solid malignancies. METHODOLOGY: A systematic literature review of PubMed (National Institutes of Health), Cochrane Central (Cochrane collaboration), and Google Scholar was conducted with the

Mouse mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomal miR-466f-3p reverses EMT process through inhibiting AKT/GSK3β pathway via c-MET in radiation-induced lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced lung fibrosis (RILF) is a common complication of thoracic radiotherapy. Alveolar epithelial cells play a crucial role in lung fibrosis via epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells own the beneficial properties to repair and regeneration of damaged tissues, however the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: Mouse mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes (mMSCs-Exo) were isolated by differential centrifugation, and their protective effects were assessed in vivo and in vitro, respectively. EMT-associated

Successful treatment with radiation therapy for desmoid-type fibromatosis with unilateral hydronephrosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid-type fibromatosis is a rare disease that can result in hydronephrosis. Hydronephrosis associated with desmoid-type fibromatosis often requires surgery or ureteral stent insertion. Although radiation therapy is recommended for inoperable cases of desmoid-type fibromatosis, there has been no report of treatment for hydronephrosis associated with desmoid-type fibromatosis by radiation therapy alone. We herein report a case of successful treatment for inoperable recurrence of desmoid-type fibromatosis with unilateral hydronephrosis by radiation therapy alone. CASE PRESENTATION

Radiotherapy-related skin toxicity (RAREST-02): A randomized trial testing the effect of a mobile application reminding head-and-neck cancer patients to perform skin care (reminder app) on radiation dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy of head-and-neck cancer can be associated with significant toxicities including dermatitis and oral mucositis. Severe toxicities may require interruptions of the radiation treatment associated with impairment of the patients' prognoses. This study will investigate whether the addition of a reminder app to standard care can reduce dermatitis and oral mucositis rates during radiotherapy in these patients. METHODS: This randomized trial compares standard care supported by a reminder app (Arm A) to standard care alone (Arm B) with respect to grade ≥ 2 radiation dermatitis

Proteinase-3 and myeloperoxidase serotype in relation to demographic factors and geographic distribution in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated glomerulonephritis.

BACKGROUND: In anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated glomerulonephritis, antigen specificity varies between myeloperoxidase (MPO) and proteinase 3 (PR3). This has been reported to vary in relation to age, gender, geography and extrarenal manifestations. However, studies are difficult to compare as criteria for inclusion vary. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between ANCA serotype, latitude, ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels, age, gender and renal function at diagnosis in a large study with uniform inclusion criteria. METHODS: Patients with biopsy-prov

Topical Deferoxamine Alleviates Skin Injury and Normalizes Atomic Force Microscopy Patterns Following Radiation in a Murine Breast Reconstruction Model.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is most commonly managed with a combination of tumor ablation, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. Despite the oncologic benefit of these treatments, the detrimental effect of radiation on surrounding tissue challenges the attainment of ideal breast reconstruction outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of topical deferoxamine (DFO) to reduce cutaneous ulceration and collagen disorganization following radiotherapy in a murine model of expander-based breast reconstruction. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 15) were divided into 3 groups: co

Projected Future Cancer Risks in Children Treated With Fluoroscopy-Guided Cardiac Catheterization Procedures.

Background Children treated with cardiac catheterization procedures have now a long life expectancy and consequently potential long-term radiation-induced risks. We projected lifetime attributable risks (LARs) of cancer incidence from the most frequent procedures in pediatrics: atrial septal defect closure, patent ductus arteriosus occlusion, or pulmonary valvuloplasty. Methods and Results Organ equivalent doses were estimated for 1251 procedures performed in children aged ≤15 years at 2 reference catheterization centers in France from 2009 to 2013. Sex-specific LARs were projected in lifelong

Three-Dimensional Echocardiographic Guidance of Right Heart Catheterization Decreases Radiation Exposure in Atrial Septal Defect Closures.

BACKGROUND: Radiation reduction is desirable in children undergoing cardiac catheterization. Three-dimensional (3D) transesophageal echocardiographic (3D TEE) imaging obviates the need for mental reconstruction of 3D structures from two-dimensional images. Three-dimensional TEE imaging is used in atrial septal defect (ASD) closures. Three-dimensional TEE guidance of right heart catheterization (RHC) without fluoroscopy for ASD closures has not been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of 3D TEE guidance of RHC in ASD closures and radiation reduction compared with

Decreasing Recurrence Rates for Ductal Carcinoma In Situ: Analysis of 2996 Women Treated with Breast-Conserving Surgery Over 30 Years.

BACKGROUND: Randomized trials of radiation after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) found substantial rates of recurrence, with half of the recurrences being invasive. Decreasing local recurrence rates for invasive breast carcinoma have been observed and are largely attributed to improvements in systemic therapy. In this study, we examine recurrence rates after BCS for DCIS over 3 decades at one institution. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a prospectively maintained database of DCIS patients undergoing BCS from 1978 to 2010. Cox proportional hazard models
