Collagen peptides increase curcumin bioaccessibility in milk protein-stabilized emulsions by increasing mixed micelle solubilization capacity.

Collagen peptides (CPTs) are common ingredients in protein-rich functional beverages. However, the impact of CPTs on the digestion behavior of nutraceutical-fortified functional beverages remains poorly understood. We therefore investigated the effects of CPT on the structural, physicochemical, and digestion properties of curcumin-loaded milk protein concentrate (MPC)-stabilized emulsions. CPT addition had little impact on the physicochemical stability or encapsulation efficiency (>95 %) of MPC emulsions. In vitro digestion experiments showed that CPT addition increased curcumin bioaccessibili…

The application of headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in craft beers, wines and soft drinks.

The increasing interest of consumers in the still-developing craft beer market and the strict tax-related legal regulations concerning alcoholic beverages require precise methods for quality control. Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (…

Effect of Acute Nutritional Ketosis on Circulating Levels of Growth Differentiation Factor 15: Findings from a Cross-Over Randomised Controlled Trial.

Exogenous supplementation with ketone beverages has been shown to reduce plasma glucose levels during acute nutritional ketosis. It remains to be investigated whether growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15)-an anorexigenic hormone-is involved in this process. The aim was to investigate the effect of a ketone ester beverage delivering β-hydroxybutyrate (KEβHB) on plasma levels of GDF-15, as well as assess the influence of eating behaviour on it. The study was a randomised controlled trial (registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03889210). Individuals were given a KEβHB beverage or placebo in …

Accidental intoxication with Veratrum album.

A 49-year-old man consumed two glasses (approximately 2 x 20 mL) of a beverage containing yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea). Shortly after ingestion, he developed nausea, vomiting, and oral paraesthesia. On admission to the hospital he suffered from severe bradycardia (35 beats/min) and hypotension (50/30 mm Hg), and he was treated with activated charcoal, antiemetics (metoclopramide, ondansetron), atropine, and intravenous electrolytic solution. The initial suspicion of Veratrum poisoning could be confirmed by identifying protoveratrines A (ProA) and protoveratrine B (ProB) in a sample from the

[Major hypokalemia with rhabdomyolysis secondary to the intake of a nonalcoholic aniseed aperitif].

A case of exogenous hypermineralocorticism secondary to absorption of an alcohol-free liquorice beverage is reported here. The patient was a 53 year old man with known alcoholic liver cirrhosis who had stopped drinking alcohol one year earlier. He was admitted to the hospital for fever and myalgia without hypertension. Laboratory tests showed severe hypokalemia (1.7 mmol/l), metabolic acidosis and enzyme abnormalities compatible with rhabdomyolysis. Urinary potassium excretion was high. Plasma renin activity and aldosterone levels were low. Symptoms were those of exogenous hypermineralocortici

Energy drink exposures reported to Texas poison centers: Analysis of adverse incidents in relation to total sales, 2010-2014.

The ill-defined term "energy drink" includes a disparate group of products (beverages, shots, concentrates, and workout powders) having large differences in caffeine content and concentration and intended use. Hence, inaccurate conclusions may be drawn when describing adverse events associated with "energy drinks". The FDA is considering new regulation of these products but product specificity is needed to evaluate safety. To help address this, we queried Texas Poison Center Network data for single substance exposures to "energy drinks" from 2010 to 2014, then analyzed adverse events by produc…

Contemporary nutritional transition: determinants of diet and its impact on body composition.

The world has experienced a marked shift in the global BMI distribution towards reduced undernutrition and increased obesity. The collision between human biology, shaped over the millennia and modern technology, globalization, government policies and food industry practices have worked to create far-reaching energy imbalance across the globe. A prime example is the clash between our drinking habits and our biology. The shift from water and breast milk as the only beverages available, to a vast array of caloric beverages was very rapid, shaped both by our tastes and aggressive marketing of the …

The Effect of Alcohol on Blood Pressure and Hypertension.

PURPOSE: To examine the acute and chronic effects of alcohol on blood pressure (BP) and the incidence of hypertension. We discuss the most current understanding of the mechanisms underlining these effects and their associations with the putative cardioprotective effects of consumption of low-to-moderate amounts of alcoholic beverages. RECENT FINDINGS: A recent meta-analysis confirmed findings of experimental studies, demonstrating an acute biphasic effect of ethanol on BP, decreasing up to 12 h of ingestion and increasing after that. This effect is mediated by vagal inhibition and sympathetic…

Reducing effect of an extract of Phaseolus vulgaris on food intake in mice--focus on highly palatable foods.

Different lines of experimental evidence indicate that treatment with extracts from and derivatives of Phaseolus vulgaris reduces intake of food, including highly palatable foods and beverages, in rats. The present study was designed to extend to mice these lines of evidence. To this end, CD1 mice were treated acutely with a standardized extract of P. vulgaris and then exposed to unlimited access to regular food pellets (Experiment 1) or 1-hour limited access to three different palatable foods/beverages, such as butter cookies (Experiment 2), a condensed-milk beverage (Experiment 3), and a cho…
