Silymarin modified polysulfone hollow fiber membranes with antioxidant, anti-M1 macrophage polarization and hemocompatibility for blood purification.

Oxidative stress is highly prevalent in maintenance hemodialysis patients and increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Silymarin (SM) is a natural compound extracted from plants, and has been shown to have pharmacological effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, and anti-nephrotoxicity. SM-modified polysulfone (PSF) hemodialysis membranes were prepared by an immersion-precipitation phase transition method. The experimental results showed that the modified membranes effectively scavenged free radicals, significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation, and h

Spatiotemporally Responsive Hydrogel Dressing with Self-Adaptive Antibacterial Activity and Cell Compatibility for Wound Sealing and Healing.

Adhesive hydrogels containing quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) moieties have shown attractive advantages in treatment for acute wounds, attributed to their high performances in wound sealing and sterilization. However, the introduction of QAS commonly leads to high cytotoxicity and adhesive deterioration. Herein, aimed to solve these two issues, a self-adaptive dressing with delicate spatiotemporal responsiveness is developed by employing cellulose sulfate (CS) as dynamic layers to coat QAS-based hydrogel. In detail, due to the acid environment of wound in the early stages of healing, the CS coa

Fractional order ATR-FTIR differential spectroscopy for detection of weak bands and assessing the radiation modifications in gamma sterilized UHMWPE.

This study presents a new method for identifying radiation modifications in UHMWPE polymer samples. The method involves using a mathematical technique called fractional order differential transformation on IR spectra obtained through ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. This new method was compared to existing techniques such as FTIR, XRD, and DSC, and it was found to be more sensitive and accurate in detecting radiation-induced changes in the polymer. The study focused on identifying changes in weak IR bands in the UHMWPE samples caused by gamma sterilization while simulating IR spectra using different ord

Synthesis of chemically-crosslinked multi-arm star-shaped polyurethane with triple-shape memory effect.

In this study, chemically-crosslinked multi-arm star-shaped polyurethanes (SPUs) were prepared using three, four, and six-arm polycaprolactone, hexamethylene diisocyanate, and 1, 4-butanediol. The hydrogen bonding indices of soft and hard segments were calculated using Fourier transform infrared spectra. The results indicated that the phase separation among hard and soft segments increased with the increment of PCL arm numbers. Moreover, the results of X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry showed that the crystallization ability of the three and four-arm SPUs were lower than

A main chain biodegradable polyurethane with anti-protein adsorption and anti-bacterial adhesion performances.

Biofilms are initially formed by substances such as proteins secreted by bacteria adhering to a surface. To achieve a durable antibacterial material, biodegradable dihydroxyl-terminated poly[(ethylene oxide)-co-(ethylene carbonate)] (PEOC(OH)2) with anti-protein adsorption properties was synthesized in this study. Further polycondensation of PEOC(OH)2 and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) led to biodegradable polyurethane (PEOC-PU) with PEOC as the soft segment. For comparison, polyurethanes with polyethylene glycol (PEG-PU) and polypropylene glycol (PPG-PU) as soft segments were also synthesized

Reducing the foreign body response on human cochlear implants and their materials in vivo with photografted zwitterionic hydrogel coatings.

The foreign body response to implanted materials often complicates the functionality of sensitive biomedical devices. For cochlear implants, this response can reduce device performance, battery life and preservation of residual acoustic hearing. As a permanent and passive solution to the foreign body response, this work investigates ultra-low-fouling poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (pCBMA) thin film hydrogels that are simultaneously photo-grafted and photo-polymerized onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The cellular anti-fouling properties of these coatings are robustly maintained even after s

Chitosan-based Schiff bases: Promising materials for biomedical and industrial applications.

There is plenty of scope for modifying chitosan, an only polycationic natural polysaccharide, owing to its reactive functional groups, namely hydroxyl and amino groups. Although innumerable numbers of chitosan derivatives have been synthesized by modifying these groups and reported elsewhere, in this review article, an attempt has been exclusively made to demonstrate the syntheses of various chitosan-based Schiff bases (CSBs) simply by allowing the reactions of reactive amino groups of chitosan with different aldehydes/ketones of interest. Due to their very peculiar and unique characteristics,

3D bioprinted functional skeletal muscle models have potential applications for studies of muscle wasting in cancer cachexia.

Acquired muscle diseases such as cancer cachexia are responsible for the poor prognosis of many patients suffering from cancer. In vitro models are needed to study the underlying mechanisms of those pathologies. Extrusion bioprinting is an emerging tool to emulate the aligned architecture of fibers while implementing additive manufacturing techniques in tissue engineering. However, designing bioinks that reconcile the rheological needs of bioprinting and the biological requirements of muscle tissue is a challenging matter. Here we formulate a biomaterial with dual crosslinking to modulate the

Biodegradable biomaterials in orthopedic surgery: A narrative review of the current evidence.

BACKGROUND: Biomaterials are routinely used in orthopedic surgery to fill bone defects, improve bone healing, and as degradable fixation material. A wide range of materials are currently in use, and the materials are chosen according to their bioactive properties. Osteoinductive materials stimulate bone healing by promoting osteogenesis. Osteoconductive materials facilitate bone growth on the surface of the material. Despite the many materials in use and an increasing number of published studies, randomized controlled trials on the subject are scarce. METHODS: This review aims to summarize th

Advances in biomaterial-based cardiac organoids.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the important causes of death worldwide. The incidence and mortality rates are increasing annually with the intensification of social aging. The efficacy of drug therapy is limited in individuals suffering from severe heart failure due to the inability of myocardial cells to undergo regeneration and the challenging nature of cardiac tissue repair following injury. Consequently, surgical transplantation stands as the most efficient approach for treatment. Nevertheless, the shortage of donors and the considerable number of heart failure patients worldwide,

Peritoneum-Inspired Janus Porous Hydrogel with Anti-Deformation, Anti-Adhesion, and Pro-Healing Characteristics for Abdominal Wall Defect Treatment.

Implantable meshes used in tension-free repair operations facilitate treatment of internal soft-tissue defects. However, clinical meshes fail to achieve anti-deformation, anti-adhesion, and pro-healing properties simultaneously, leading to undesirable surgery outcomes. Herein, inspired by the peritoneum, a novel biocompatible Janus porous poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (JPVA hydrogel) is developed to achieve efficient repair of internal soft-tissue defects by a facile yet efficient strategy based on top-down solvent exchange. The densely porous and smooth bottom-surface of JPVA hydrogel minimize

Simple Preparation of Injectable Hydrogels with Phase-Separated Structures That Can Encapsulate Live Cells.

Injectable hydrogels are biomaterials that can be administered minimally invasively in liquid form and are considered promising artificial extracellular matrix (ECM) materials. However, ordinary injectable hydrogels are synthesized from water-soluble molecules to ensure injectability, resulting in non-phase-separated structures, making them structurally different from natural ECMs with phase-separated insoluble structural proteins, such as collagen and elastin. Here, we propose a simple material design approach to impart phase-separated structures to injectable hydrogels by adding inorganic sa

Fine-Tuning the Endcap Chemistry of Acrylated Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-Based Hydrogels for Efficient Burn Wound Exudate Management.

Most commercial dressings with moderate to high exudate uptake capacities are mechanically weaker and/or require a secondary dressing. The current research article focuses on the development of hydrogel-based wound dressings combining mechanical strength with high exudate absorption capacities using acrylate-endcapped urethane-based precursors (AUPs). AUPs with varying poly(ethylene glycol) backbone molar masses (10 and 20 kg mol-1 ) and endcap chemistries are successfully synthesized in toluene, subsequently processed into UV-cured hydrogel sheets and are benchmarked against several commercia

Immunomodulatory Biomaterials and Emerging Analytical Techniques for Probing the Immune Micro-Environment.

After implantation of a biomaterial, both the host immune system and properties of the material determine the local immune response. Through triggering or modulating the local immune response, materials can be designed towards a desired direction of promoting tissue repair or regeneration. High-throughput sequencing technologies such as single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) emerging as a powerful tool for dissecting the immune micro-environment around biomaterials, have not been fully utilized in the field of soft tissue regeneration. In this review, we first discussed the procedures of forei
