Biomedical risk assessment as an aid for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: A possible strategy for increasing smoking cessation rates could be to provide smokers with feedback on the current or potential future biomedical effects of smoking using, for example, measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO), lung function, or genetic susceptibility to lung cancer or other diseases. OBJECTIVES: The main objective was to determine the efficacy of providing smokers with feedback on their exhaled CO measurement, spirometry results, atherosclerotic plaque imaging, and genetic susceptibility to smoking-related diseases in helping them to quit smoking. Real-time foot clearance biofeedback to assist gait rehabilitation following stroke: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: The risk of falling is significantly higher in people with chronic stroke and it is, therefore, important to design interventions to improve mobility and decrease falls risk. Minimum toe clearance (MTC) is the key gait cycle event for predicting tripping-falls because it occurs mid-swing during the walking cycle where forward velocity of the foot is maximum. High forward velocity coupled with low MTC increases the probability of unanticipated foot-ground contacts. Training procedures to increase toe-ground clearance (MTC) have potential, therefore, as a falls-prevention interventio

The effects of pelvic floor muscle therapy on symptoms, voiding, and pelvic floor muscle activity parameters in children with overactive bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Refractory overactive bladder (OAB) in children can be treated with second line modalities such as as biofeedback, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), and botulinum toxin. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of biofeedback-assisted pelvic floor muscle therapy (PFMT) on symptoms, bladder capacity, uroflowmetry, and pelvic floor muscle activity (PFMA) in children with resistant OAB or dysfunctional voiding (DV) with associated seconder bladder overactivity (DV/SBO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 children with resistant OAB were included in the stud

Controlling faecal incontinence in women by performing anal exercises with biofeedback or loperamide: a randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Well designed, large comparative effectiveness trials assessing the efficacy of primary interventions for faecal incontinence are few in number. The objectives of this study were to compare different combinations of anorectal manometry-assisted biofeedback, loperamide, education, and oral placebo. METHODS: In this randomised factorial trial, participants were recruited from eight clinical sites in the USA. Women with at least one episode of faecal incontinence per month in the past 3 months were randomly assigned 0·5:1:1:1 to one of four groups: oral placebo plus education only, p

Treatment for Residual Rhotic Errors With High- and Low-Frequency Ultrasound Visual Feedback: A Single-Case Experimental Design.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore how the frequency with which ultrasound visual feedback (UVF) is provided during speech therapy affects speech sound learning. METHOD: Twelve children with residual speech errors affecting /ɹ/ participated in a multiple-baseline across-subjects design with 2 treatment conditions. One condition featured 8 hr of high-frequency UVF (HF; feedback on 89% of trials), whereas the other included 8 hr of lower-frequency UVF (LF; 44% of trials). The order of treatment conditions was counterbalanced across participants. All participants were treated on vocal

The rubber foot illusion.

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb amputation causes the individual a huge functional impairment due to the lack of adequate sensory perception from the missing limb. The development of an augmenting sensory feedback device able to restore some of the missing information from the amputated limb may improve embodiment, control and acceptability of the prosthesis. FINDINGS: In this work we transferred the Rubber Hand Illusion paradigm to the lower limb. We investigated the possibility of promoting body ownership of a fake foot, in a series of experiments fashioned after the RHI using matched or mismatched

Biofeedback-guided control of abdominothoracic muscular activity reduces regurgitation episodes in patients with rumination.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Rumination syndrome is characterized by effortless recurrent regurgitation of recently ingested food into the mouth, with consequent expulsion or re-chewing and swallowing. We investigated whether rumination is under volitional control and can be reversed by behavioral treatment. METHODS: We performed a prospective study of 28 patients who fulfilled the Rome criteria for rumination and had no organic disorders on the basis of a thorough evaluation. The diagnosis of rumination was confirmed by intestinal manometry (abdominal compression associated with regurgitation). Patien

The role of anorectal investigations in predicting the outcome of biofeedback in the treatment of faecal incontinence.

OBJECTIVE: The current literature does not provide unequivocal evidence on prognostic factors of patients' response to biofeedback for management of faecal incontinence. The aim of this study was to identify independent predictors of patient response to biofeedback. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Baseline demographic characteristics, symptomatology and anorectal investigation reports of 137 patients who completed biofeedback therapy were analysed retrospectively. Short-term response (<3 months) to biofeedback was assessed using subjective criteria (improvement/ no improvement). P Values < 0.05 were co

Controlled unilateral isometric force generated by epidural spinal cord stimulation in the rat hindlimb.

Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has often been used to restore stereotypic locomotor movements after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, restoring freeform movement requires specific force generation and independently controlled limbs for changing environments. Therefore, a second stimulus location would be advantageous, controlling force separately from locomotor movements. In normal and transected rats treated with mineral oil or saline, EES was performed at L1-L6 vertebral levels, caudal to spinal segments typical for locomotion, identifying secondary sites capable of activating hindli

Biofeedback of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging data from the supplementary motor area reduces functional connectivity to subcortical regions.

Recent studies have reported that biofeedback of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging data can enable people to gain control of activity in specific parts of their brain and can alter functional connectivity between brain areas. Here we describe a study using biofeedback of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging data to train healthy subjects to control activity in their supplementary motor area (SMA), a region of interest in Tourette syndrome (TS). Although a significant increase in control over the SMA during biofeedback was not found, subjects were able to exert signific

Effect of biofeedback accompanying occupational therapy and functional electrical stimulation in hemiplegic patients.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect that electromyographic biofeedback (EMG-BFB), used in conjunction with occupational therapy (OT) and functional electrical stimulation (FES), has on spasticity, range of motion, and upper extremity function in hemiplegic patients. A total of 59 patients treated at a university-based rehabilitation centre were studied. Of those 59 patients, 31 received twice-weekly sessions of OT+FES, together with weekly sessions of EMG-BFB, and 28 received only the twice-weekly sessions of OT+FES. The patients were evaluated at baseline, at 6 months, and

Dynamic balance training with sensory electrical stimulation in chronic stroke patients.

A case study investigating the impact of sensory electrical stimulation during perturbed stance in one chronic stroke patient is presented. A special apparatus called the BalanceTrainer was used. It allows the application of perturbations to neurologically impaired people during standing, while protecting the subject from falling. The subject underwent two different periods of perturbation training, each lasting ten days. During the first period the subject was perturbed in eight different directions. During the second period the subject was also perturbed, but was assisted by sensory electric

A randomized-controlled trial comparing an educational intervention alone vs education and biofeedback in the management of faecal incontinence in women.

Biofeedback (BF) training is an accepted therapy in the treatment of faecal incontinence (FI) despite a paucity of data demonstrating benefit. This study aims to determine whether BF has any specific effect above and beyond an educational intervention. Twenty-three women with regular and frequent idiopathic FI were randomized to education and pelvic exercise vs education and BF therapy. Complete data is available for 18 women. Overall, 61% of participants demonstrated a complete response. There was no difference in response rate between treatment arms. Women with FI demonstrate a good response

Behavioral treatment approaches to chronic headache.

Over 3 decades of research have shown the utility of a number of behavioral treatments, chiefly relaxation, biofeedback, and cognitive behavior therapy, for uncomplicated forms of migraine and tension-type headache. However, the literature base is much less extensive for chronic, complicated, and refractory forms of headache. This paper reviews extant work on the usefulness of behavioral treatment for headache accompanied by medication overuse; chronic, daily, high intensity headache; refractory headaches; cluster headache; chronic tension-type headache; posttraumatic headache; and headache ac

Direct control of a computer from the human central nervous system.

We describe an invasive alternative to externally applied brain-computer interface (BCI) devices. This system requires implantation of a special electrode into the outer layers of the human neocortex. The recorded signals are transmitted to a nearby receiver and processed to drive a cursor on a computer monitor in front of the patient. Our present patient has learned to control the cursor for the production of synthetic speech and typing.
