Exogenous pigmentation by silver nitrate is a rare disease whose clinical manifestations appear even years after the contact, making its diagnosis difficult on occasions. It is characterized by the presence of blue-gray macules or plaques on the skin or mucosa in the contact area, sometimes very similar to melanocytic lesions and melanoma, which constitute the main differential diagnosis. We report the case of a male patient from Medellín, Colombia, with a family history of melanoma and the presence of these lesions throughout his body.

The skin constitutes the interface between the organism and the environment, and it protects the body from harmful substances in the environment via physical, chemical and immunological barriers. The immunological barrier of the skin comprises both cells from the innate and the adaptive immune system. During the last years, it has become clear that innate lymphoid cells play a role in homeostasis and inflammation of the skin in humans and mice. In this review, we will discuss the role of innate lymphoid cells in healthy and inflamed skin with special focus on their role in atopic dermatitis.

Although outcomes of neonatal cardiac surgery have dramatically improved in the last two decades, low body weight still constitutes an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality. In particular, cardiac surgery in neonates with very low birth weight (≤1.5 kg) is carried out with greater risk because most organ systems are immature. We report here on a successful case of early one-stage total repair of coarctation of the aorta and a ventricular septal defect in a 1,480 gram neonate.

Hystrignathus dearmasi sp. n. (Oxyurida: Hystrignathidae) is described from an unidentified passalid beetle (Coleoptera: Passalidae) from Panama. It resembles Hystrignathus cobbi Travassos & Kloss, 1957 from Brazil, by having a similar form of the cephalic end, extension of cervical spines and absence of lateral alae. It differs from the latter species by having the body shorter, the oesophagus and tail comparatively larger, the vulva situated more posterior and the eggs ridged. This species constitutes the first record of a nematode parasitizing a Panamanian passalid.

We report a rare case of gastric collision tumour composed of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma in a 56-year-old Caucasian male. The tumour was located in the gastric body and, to our knowledge, it is the tenth case described in the literature and the first in Poland. The adenocarcinoma component constituted 20% of the lesion and was in a more advanced stage than the neuroendocrine component. Puerperal adynamic ileus includes acute mild and severe clinical manifestations. Acute severe puerperal adynamic ileus may constitute the clinical indication of a serious underlying disease, such as sepsis, rupture of uterus, intra-abdominal or retroperitoneal bleeding, ureteral pathology, intra-abdominal foreign body and internal diseases. Sometimes the diagnosis requires abdominal and chest X-ray, uterine exploration and intravenous pyelography. Surgical treatment requires proper previous general evaluation; and fluids, electrolytes and plasma should be provided.
