Auditory brain stem responses were obtained from normal-hearing infants and adults in response to bone-conducted 500 and 2000 Hz tones presented in quiet and high-pass noise masking. The tones were presented at 70 (500 and 2000 Hz) and 46 (2000 Hz) dB peak to peak equivalent (re: 1 dyne RMS). The high-pass noise-masked waveforms were subtracted in succession to obtain derived responses, providing estimates of the cochlear regions contributing to the nonmasked responses. The authors present seven cases of apparently isolated spontaneous haematomas of the brain stem detected by computerized tomography (CT). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in all patients, and in three of these on two occasions at different stages of the lesion. Changes in MRI signal according to the moment this examination was carried out (acute, subacute or chronic stage) are described. In two of three patients operated upon the haematoma was found to be due to an occult vascular malformation.

We investigated brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in 20 infants at risk of SIDS (age 5 days to 4 months) and in 7 control infants (age 5 days to 4 months). 19 infants were diagnosed as having sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), which we consider to be a possible risk factor for SIDS. A case of a patient with haematogeneous infection by listeria monocytogenes, involving the basal and brainstem is reported. Clinically the disease manifested by fever and brainstem syndrome of acute onset. The microscopic examination revealed foci of suppurative encephalitis in the brainstem and basal ganglia. The possible pathogenic mechanisms are discussed. It is emphasized that the association of a febrile syndrome with brainstem dysfunction should raise the possibility of infection of the nervous system by listeria monocytogenes.

A post-mortem examined case of herpetic brainstem encephalitis is presented. Clinically, the patient had cephalalgia followed by ataxia, drowsiness and multiple palsies of some cranial nerves, developing into death in eight days. This study evaluated the Crib-O-Gram as a screening test for hearing loss in NICU infants using Brain Stem Electric Response Audiometry (BERA) as the standard. Two Crib-O-Gram tests were administered to 280 babies within 48 hours of BERA testing. An additional 26 babies received BERA and one Crib-O-Gram test. Correlation coefficients for the two Crib-O-Gram scalar scores were calculated separately for a group of preterm (31 to 37 weeks) and a group of full term and older (38 to 54 weeks) infants, with values of 0.36 and 0.52, respectively. Previous studies have shown that severe neonatal asphyxia and hypoxia lead to a redistribution of cerebral blood flow (CBF) with a preferential perfusion of the brain stem. The present study shows that this mechanism is operative also in moderately hypoxic newborn lambs (oxygen saturation 32.7-65.2) with a threshold of about 25% reduction in oxygen saturation. In hypoxia, the mean increase in total CBF, brain stem and telencephalic blood flow was 44%, 68% and 43%, respectively (five lambs). Auditory evoked brain-stem responses (ABRs) were recorded from the surfaces of the brain of lightly anesthetized newborn (1-7 days old) and adult (7-9 weeks old) chickens as a measure of the development of auditory processing. A 65-year-old woman with known breast carcinoma developed headaches, followed shortly by disequilibrium, vertical diplopia and dysarthria. Cranial computerized tomography (CCT) demonstrated a dense, irregularly enhancing pontine lesion with associated mass effect. She received dexamethasone (Decadron) and radiotherapy and subsequently expired. Postmortem examination disclosed a ruptured brain stem arteriovenous malformation within a massive hemorrhage along with necrotic atypical cells suggestive of metastatic disease.
