Simulations and human cadaver head studies to identify optimal acoustic receiver locations for minimally invasive photoacoustic-guided neurosurgery.

Real-time intraoperative guidance during minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures (e.g., endonasal transsphenoidal surgery) is often limi … ed with both an intact human skull (which was cleaned from tissue attachments) and a complete human cadaver head (with contents and surrounding tissue intact) in order to investigate optimal locations for ultrasound probe placement during photoacoustic imaging and to test the feasibility of a modified light delivery design. Optimization of the homodigital antegrade island flap for fingertip reconstruction: New dissection sequence based on cadaver study findings.

INTRODUCTION: The homodigital antegrade island flap pedicled on the proper palmar digital artery is very useful for covering fingertip defects. However, it has its drawbacks, such as the risk of stiffness due to retractile scars and the need for extensive dissection with long-lasting dysesthesia in some cases. In clinical studies, expanding the skin paddle with V-shaped incisions increases the flap's advancement. We wanted to know whether making these V incisions for paddle expansion would make dissection on the volar side of the proximal interphalangeal joint unnecessary. METHODS: A cadaver …

Possibility of quantitative T2-mapping MRI of cartilage near metal in high tibial osteotomy: A human cadaver study.

T2-mapping is a widely used quantitative MRI technique in osteoarthritis research. An important challenge for its application in the context of high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is the presence of metallic fixation devices. In this study, we evaluated the possibility of performing T2-mapping after a HTO, by assessing the extent of magnetic susceptibility artifacts and the influence on T2 relaxation times caused by two commonly used fixation devices. T2-mapping with a 3D fast spin-echo sequence at three Tesla was performed on 11 human cadaveric knee joints before and after implantation of a titanium …

Intrathecal Spread of Injectate Following an Ultrasound-Guided Selective C5 Nerve Root Injection in a Human Cadaver Model.

Ultrasound-guided selective C5 nerve root blocks have been described in several case reports as a safe and effective means to anesthetize the distal clavicle while maintaining innervation of the upper extremity and preserving diaphragmatic function. In this study, cadavers were injected with 5 mL of 0.5% methylene blue dye under ultrasound guidance to investigate possible proximal and distal spread of injectate along the brachial plexus, if any. Following the injections, the specimens were dissected and examined to determine the distribution of dye and the structures affected. One injection re…

Direct videoscopic approach to the thoracic aorta for aortic endograft delivery: evaluation in a human cadaver circulation model.

PURPOSE: To examine the feasibility of a direct videoscopic approach to the descending thoracic aorta for branched endograft delivery to the aortic arch and abdominal aorta. METHODS: Aneurysms were created in the aortic arch and pararenal aorta of 3 human cadavers, and pulsatile flow was established using a roller pump. Thoracoscopically, 2 double-felted purse-string sutures were placed on the thoracic aorta. Via the most distal trocar, an endoscopic needle was used to insert a stiff guidewire into the aorta through the center of the purse-string suture. Under direct videoscopic control, a 20…

Surgical anatomy of intrapelvic fasciae and vesico-uterine ligament in nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy with fresh cadaver dissections.

Radical hysterectomy has been performed for invasive cervical cancer, and autonomic nerve-sparing procedures have been developed to preserve bladder function. To perform and improve the nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy, it is important to understand anatomy of the intra pelvic fasciae, specially vesico-uterine ligament (VUL), because most of injuries to the nerves occurred during incision of the VUL in radical hysterectomy procedures. The objectives of the present study were to provide histological understanding of major structures found in nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy. Serial macrosco

High prevalence of tarsal coalitions and tarsal joint variants in a recent cadaver sample and its possible significance.

Tarsal coalitions (TC) are defined as fibrous (beyond normal ligaments), cartilaginous, or osseous unions of at least two tarsal bones. Most of the clinical studies report the prevalence of TC as <1%, but they disregard the asymptomatic coalitions. Because TC have been associated with pathologic conditions, including degenerative arthritic changes, knowledge of their prevalence has clinical importance. The aim of our study was to establish the prevalence of TC and tarsal joint variants. A total of 114 feet from 62 cadavers (average age = 78 years) without obvious foot pathologies were dissecte…

Do laryngeal mask airway devices attenuate liquid flow between the esophagus and pharynx? A randomized, controlled cadaver study.

UNLABELLED: In this randomized, controlled cadaver study, we tested the hypothesis that the standard laryngeal mask airway (LMA) and flexible laryngeal mask airway (FLMA) attenuate liquid flow between the esophagus and pharynx. Fifty fresh cadavers were studied in four LMA groups. Ten female cadavers had a size 4 LMA and 10 had a size 4 FLMA; 10 male cadavers had a size 5 LMA and 10 had a size 5 FLMA; 5 male and 5 female cadavers functioned as controls. The chest was opened, and the infusion set of a pressure-controlled, continuous flow pump was inserted into the esophagus and ligated into pla…

Graft outcome in cadaver renal transplants treated with full-dose cyclosporine induction without antibody, irrespective of graft function.

Cyclosporine (CSA) induction has been shown to prolong delayed graft function which in turn may compromise graft outcome. In this study we report our experience with full-dose CSA induction without antibody treatment irrespective of graft function and stress the importance of achieving therapeutic CSA levels in the early post-transplant period. The records of 293 first cadaver renal transplant recipients who were transplanted between January 1992 and December 1995 were reviewed. Patients were divided into those who had immediate graft function (IGF, n = 197) and the ones who had delayed graft …

An approach to organ salvage from non-heartbeating cadaver donors under existing legal and ethical requirements for transplantation.

Effective utilization of nonheartbeating cadaver donor organs is limited by the time required to obtain the necessary family consent prior to organ retrieval (a delay of at least 4-6 hr); this exceeds by far the maximum tolerance of kidneys to warm ischemia. Measures that could theoretically permit use of such organs include: (1) rapid in situ flush cooling; (2) continued in situ kidney cooling until permission for donation is secured; and (3) cell-membrane stabilization of vital organs, with only minimal invasion of the donor body. These measures were tested experimentally in dogs. Hemorrhagi…

115 patients with first cadaver kidney transplants followed two to seven and a half years. A multifactorial analysis.

One hundred fifteen consecutive patients received first transplants from cadaver donors at the University of Minnesota between January 1, 1968, and May 31, 1973. All patients have been followed for at least two years. The two-year survival rate is 70 per cent and the two-year transplant function rate is 58 per cent. Considerable improvement in both patient survival and transplant function has been noted since 1971. The success of transplantation appears to depend to a large degree on the age of the transplant recipient, the number of HLA antigens matched between donor and recipient, and the do…

Water-soluble dye staining of the flap nutrient artery and its perforator branch in cadavers embalmed using saturated salt solution and urea methods: does demonstration using a dye-stained cadaver increase a trainee's level of skill acquisition?

Cadaveric surgical training (CST) can safely improve surgical skill. Recently, various innovations have made surgical training more realistic. Saturated salt solution (SSS) and urea methods are useful for plastic surgery training, because they better preserve the color and texture of soft tissues than formalin fixation (FA). Microvessels are invisible to the naked eye, and in this study, we visualized skin perforators by injecting dye into the flaps of nutrient vessels during hand and foot surgery. During each CST session, the instructor used three cadavers for demonstration. From 2017 to 2021…
