CD22 regulates early B cell development in BOB.1/OBF.1-deficient mice.

BOB.1/OBF.1 (also called OCA-B), a B lymphocyte-specific transcriptional coactivator, is recruited to octamer-containing promoters by interacting with the Oct-1 or Oct-2 proteins. BOB.1/OBF.1-deficient mice show impaired secondary immunoglobulin isotype secretion and complete absence of germinal centers. Furthermore, numbers of splenic B cells are reduced due to a developmental block at the transitional B cell stage in the bone marrow. We found that surface expression of CD22 is selectively increased on B lineage cells in the bone marrow of BOB.1/OBF.1-deficient mice. CD22 is known as a negati

Adapting a small change behavioral weight management program for college students: formative evaluation and iterative design process.

BACKGROUND: Offering behavioral weight management interventions in college health centers may improve cardiometabolic health for hard-to-reach emerging adult populations. PURPOSE: This paper outlines the iterative process undertaken, guided by the Adaptome framework, to adapt an evidence-based small changes approach to weight gain prevention to target weight loss and to improve the fit for delivery to college students via health centers. METHODS: Initial intervention adaptations were completed following in-depth interviews with college students and health center staff. The program was iterat

Development, implementation, and evaluation of a rapid response system at a Nigerian teaching hospital, a novel idea in sub-Saharan Africa.

AIM: Little is known about the incidence of clinical deterioration and cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) on general hospital units in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) or how rapid response systems (RRSs) might impact these events. Implementation of RRSs in high-income countries has been shown to reduce the incidence of CPA and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine whether implementation of an RRS is feasible in an LMIC medical center. METHODS: We developed and implemented an RRS in a large academic medical center in Lagos, Nigeria, in three phases: (1) Needs assessment and stake

Underfunding of German university-based high-performance medicine exemplified by the treatment of varices in cirrhosis.

Facing increasing economization in the health care sector, clinicians have to adapt not only to the ever-growing economic challenges, but also to a patient-oriented health care. Treatment costs are the most important variable for optimizing success when facing scarce human resources, increasing material- and infrastructure costs in general, as well as low revenue flexibility due to flat rates per case in Germany, the so-called Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG). University hospitals treat many patients with particularly serious illnesses. Therefore, their share of complex and expensive treatments,

Lyme borreliosis and medical wandering: what do patients think about multidisciplinary management? A qualitative study in the context of scientific and social controversy.

INTRODUCTION: To answer to patients' medical wandering, often due to "unexplained symptoms" of "unexplained diseases" and to misinformation, multidisciplinary care centers for suspected Lyme borreliosis (LB), such as the 5 Tick-Borne Diseases (TBDs) Reference Centers (TBD-RC), were created a few years ago in France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Our study consisted of a comprehensive analysis of the satisfaction of the patients managed at a TBD-RC for suspected LB in the context of scientific and social controversy. METHODS: We included all adults who were admitted to one of the TBD-RC from 20

Collaborative implementation of a community-based exercise intervention with a partnering rural American Indian community.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and socioeconomic burden of childhood obesity and diabetes has increased rapidly in the United States in the last 30 years. American Indians have the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes among newly diagnosed youth in the country. Contributing factors include environmental, behavioral, and genetic components. Some American Indian tribal communities have explored innovative ways to combat this epidemic including collaborations with academic centers on community-based research. METHOD: From 2012 to 2017, the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center and the Chocta

Outcomes among 562 recipients of placental-blood transplants from unrelated donors.

BACKGROUND: A program for banking, characterizing, and distributing placental blood, also called umbilical-cord blood, for transplantation provided grafts for 562 patients between August 24, 1992, and January 30, 1998. We evaluated this experience. METHODS: Placental blood was stored under liquid nitrogen and selected for specific patients on the basis of HLA type and leukocyte content. Patients were prepared for the transplantation of allogeneic hematopoietic cells in the placental blood and received prophylaxis against graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) according to routine procedures at each

Spectroscopic evidence from site-directed mutants of Synechocystis PCC6803 in favor of a close interaction between histidine 189 and redox-active tyrosine 160, both of polypeptide D2 of the photosystem II reaction center.

The reaction center of photosystem II of oxygenic photosynthesis contains two redox-active tyrosines called Z and D, each of which can act as an electron donor to the oxidized primary electron donor, P680+. These tyrosines are located in homologous positions on the third transmembrane alpha-helix of each of the two homologous polypeptides, D1 and D2, that comprise the reaction center. Tyrosine D of polypeptide D2 has been proposed, upon oxidation, to give up its phenolic proton to a nearby basic amino acid residue, forming a neutral radical. Modeling studies have pointed to His190 (spinach num

Deciphering the diet-inflammatory bowel disease relationship: knowledge gaps and future perspectives.

Diet is increasingly recognized not as a passive exposure but as a dynamic determinant of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pathogenesis, progression, and treatment response. This review article redefines diet as a multidimensional modifier acting through complex interactions with genetics, microbiota, intestinal barrier function, and environmental exposures. Beyond nutrient composition, we highlight how age, sex, habitual diet, cooking methods, contaminants, and lifestyle collectively shape disease trajectories. We also identify key research priorities: incorporation of long-term, mechanistica

Joint statement by the World Psychiatric Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the European Psychiatric Association, and the Global Expert Task Force on ECT on the portrayal of electroconvulsive therapy in the WHO Guidance on Mental Health Policy and Strategic Action Plans.

The World Psychiatric Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the European Psychiatric Association, and the Global Expert Task Force on ECT welcome the WHO's emphasis on rights-based, person-centered, and recovery-oriented mental health policies. However, they express concern that the WHO Guidance contains scientifically inaccurate and misleading statements particularly regarding electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). These portray ECT as inherently dangerous and advocate for its restriction or prohibition, thereby reinforcing stigma and potentially limiting access to evidence-based care

Ensuring Integrity of the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program.

The Medicaid Drug Rebate Program (MDRP) is a federal-state partnership program that aims to control prescription drug costs through contractual agreements enabling manufacturers to secure Medicaid coverage for their drugs by paying rebates to state Medicaid agencies. All states participate in MDRP, helping Medicaid beneficiaries obtain affordable access to nearly all Food and Drug Administration-approved outpatient drugs. Although the program has achieved significant cost savings for Medicaid, notable False Claims Act violations in recent years have called into question the program's operation

A study of "Doctor Heli" air ambulance utilization and perinatal outcomes in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

Many countries have adopted the use of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS). One such system in Japan is called "Doctor Heli" (Doctor Helicopter), which is sometimes used as a means of maternal transport. Since 2008, there have been 18 cases of Doctor Heli maternal transport to Fukushima Medical University Hospital, the ultimate referral center of Fukushima Prefecture. Reasons for transport included umbilical cord prolapse (UCP), placental abruption, traffic accident, and fetal bradycardia. There were two cases of intrauterine fetal death upon arrival at the hospital. Although there is

Case Report: Successful management of bilateral ureteral obstruction following repair of iatrogenic urethral ligation and transection during a canine cryptorchidectomy.

An 8-month-old male English Bulldog was presented to an academic referral center following iatrogenic urethral transection during an elective unilateral cryptorchidectomy. A contrast cystourethrogram demonstrated contrast leakage from the pre-prostatic urethra. An exploratory laparotomy confirmed ligation and transection of the pre-prostatic urethra, and a urethral anastomosis was performed. Postoperatively, the patient developed progressive azotemia, and abdominal imaging revealed bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis consistent with bilateral ureteral obstruction. No apparent cause of mec

FIGIJ Advocacy Statement on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting FGM/C, Endorsed by NASPAG.

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a global problem affecting millions of girls and women. It involves cutting or removing parts of the external genitalia for no medical reason, often without consent, and has no health benefits. It is deeply rooted in tradition and often undertaken by lay practitioners. It is known to have immediate risks (of hemorrhage, infection, death) and long-term sexual, gynecological, obstetric, urological, and mental health sequelae including post-traumatic stress disorder. Health professionals worldwide need to be aware that girls and women from high-prevale

Ethical considerations for research involving pregnant women with HIV and their children.

Pregnant and postpartum women with HIV (PPWH) and their children have historically been excluded from certain research in the name of protection. This may, however, inadvertently exacerbate health disparities. While calls for their inclusion have increased, additional practical guidance to achieve this goal is needed. Within this editorial, we provide practical recommendations for enabling PPWH and their children to participate ethically in research by identifying and addressing issues that potentially put them at risk. We ground this discussion in a framework that considers the various vulner

Advocating for Change: Addressing Barriers To Tuberculosis Care for Immigrants and Refugees in Canada.

Tuberculosis (TB) disproportionately affects immigrants and refugees in Canada, who accounted for 80% of active TB cases in 2023 despite making up only 23% of the population. This commentary highlights the urgent need to address systemic barriers that hinder access to timely and effective TB care across the cascade, from screening and diagnosis to treatment completion. Drawing on recent policy reports and emerging evidence, this paper focuses on four main intersecting challenges: language barriers, limited cultural competency among providers, healthcare system inefficiencies, and misinformatio

Redefining hemorrhoid therapy with endoscopic polidocanol foam sclerobanding.

Hemorrhoids are a common and painful condition, with conventional treatments such as endoscopic rubber band ligation (ERBL) and injection sclerotherapy often falling short due to high recurrence rates and significant post-operative pain. A clinical trial by Qu et al introduces a novel approach called endoscopic poli-docanol foam sclerobanding (EFSB). This multicenter randomized trial involved 195 patients with grade II and III internal hemorrhoids and demonstrated that EFSB significantly reduced recurrence rates and post-procedural pain while improving symptom relief and patient satisfaction c
