[Successful use of C1 esterase inhibitor in capillary leak syndrome].

This article reports the successful use of C1 esterase inhibitor in the treatment of capillary leak syndrome. The coincidence of exposure to latex during surgery and medication with ramipril led to prolonged shock complicated by secondary hyperfibrinolysis, capillary leak syndrome and multiple organ failure. Initial treatment according to relevant guidelines failed to stabilize the condition. Treatment was only successful after administration of 1,500 IU of human C1 esterase inhibitor.

Neocortical capillary flow pulsatility is not elevated in experimental communicating hydrocephalus.

While communicating hydrocephalus (CH) is often characterized by increased pulsatile flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the cerebral aqueduct, a clear-cut explanation for this phenomenon is lacking. Increased pulsatility of the entire cerebral vasculature including the cortical capillaries has been suggested as a causative mechanism. To test this theory, we used two-photon microscopy to measure flow pulsatility in neocortical capillaries 40 to 500 μm below the pial surface in adult rats with CH at 5 to 7 days (acute, n=8) and 3 to 5 weeks (chronic, n=5) after induction compared with intact c…

Capillary electrophoresis methods for the determination of covalent polyphenol-protein complexes.

The bioactivities and bioavailability of plant polyphenols including proanthocyanidins and other catechin derivatives may be affected by cov … tein bovine serum albumin and the representative polyphenol (-)epigallocatechin gallate. By pairing capillaries with different diameters with appropriate alkaline borate buffers, we are able to optimize resolution of either the protein-polyphenol complexes or the polyphenol oxidation products. This analytical method, coupled with purification of the covalent …

Adult capillary hemangioma of the liver: case report and literature review.

Primary hepatic capillary hemangioma in adults is very rare. Here, we report a case of hepatic capillary hemangioma in a 71-year-old woman. She had abnormal liver function tests, and abdominal sonography revealed a 2-cm nodular lesion and fatty liver. Computed tomography scan revealed a hypervascular tumor. During 2 years' follow-up, the hepatic tumor enlarged to 3 cm in diameter. Serological tests showed no evidence of chronic viral hepatitis or increased level of alpha-fetoprotein. In fear of hepatocellular carcinoma, she received atypical hepatectomy. Microscopically, the tumor turned out t

Developmental venous anomalies with capillary stain: a subgroup of symptomatic DVAs?

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are considered benign vascular dispositions; they are asymptomatic in the vast majority of cases. They represent extreme variations of the venous drainage and may rarely be responsible for focal venous ischemia leading to neurological dysfunction. The aim of the study is to analyze a group of patients with symptomatic DVAs with capillary stain at angiography. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological features of patients in which a DVA was considered the cause of a neurological event. In all the patients

A case report of systemic capillary leak syndrome (Clarkson's disease).

Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a very rare disorder also known as Clarkson's disease. The condition is characterized by recurrent episodes of severe capillary hyperpermeability resulting in severe hemoconcentration, hypoalbuminemia, hypovolemia and shock. We describe a 41-year-old previously healthy man who was admitted to hospital on several occasions with rapidly developing hypovolemic shock accompanied by extreme hemoconcentration and hypoalbuminemia. Our case is similar to other reports describing patients with SCLS where the initial suspicions have been pointing towards septic

Verteporfin photodynamic therapy of six eyes with retinal capillary haemangioma.

PURPOSE: Single-centre consecutive interventional case series by retrospective chart review to evaluate the efficacy of verteporfin (Visudyne™) photodynamic therapy (PDT) of retinal capillary haemangioma (RCH). METHODS: Following an initial period of observation, six eyes of five patients with RCH (juxtapapillary 3 and extrapapillary (EP) 3) received 1-3 sessions of standard verteporfin PDT upon the development of progressive vision-threatening complications. Four of the five patients had von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease. Follow-up included documentation of best-corrected Snellen visual acuity

Gingival capillary changes and oral motor weakness in juvenile dermatomyositis.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the orofacial involvement in JDM, and evaluated the possible association of gingival and mandibular mobility alterations with demographic data, periodontal indices, clinical features, muscle enzyme levels, JDM scores and treatment. METHODS: Twenty-six JDM patients were studied and compared with 22 healthy controls. Orofacial evaluation included clinical features, dental and periodontal assessment, mandibular function and salivary flow. RESULTS: The mean current age was similar in patients with JDM and controls (P > 0.05). A unique gingival alteration characterized by e

Precision in affinity capillary electrophoresis for drug-protein binding studies.

In order to achieve excellent precision in the estimation of binding constants by affinity capillary electrophoresis (ACE), electroosmotic flow (EOF) stability is the key parameter, especially when using proteins in binding assays. Appropriate rinsing protocols are mandatory. In our study, the capillary was rinsed after each run with 0.1 mol/L sodium hydroxide for 2.0 min, with water for 2.0 min followed by running electrolyte (phosphate buffer at pH 7.4) for 3.0 min (pressure=3000 mbar each). Tryptophan-human serum albumin, warfarin-bovine serum albumin and quercetin-beta-lactoglobulin were u

Lamp-based native fluorescence detection of proteins in capillary electrophoresis.

The potential of a recently developed lamp-based fluorescence detector for the analysis of underivatised proteins by capillary electrophoresis (CE) was investigated. Fluorescence detection (Flu) was achieved using optical light guides to deliver excitation light from a Xenon-Mercury lamp to the capillary detection window and to collect fluorescence emission and lead it to a photomultiplier. The performance of the detector was evaluated by monitoring the native fluorescence of the amino acid tryptophan and the proteins alpha-chymotrypsinogen A, carbonic anhydrase II, lysozyme and trypsinogen up

Simultaneous determination of tetracyclines in poultry muscle by capillary zone electrophoresis.

A capillary zone electrophoresis method with UV detection was developed for the simultaneous detection and quantification of three tetracyclines in chicken meat samples: tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DOC). The separation conditions were: a running buffer containing 30 mM sodium phosphate, 2mM EDTA disodium salt and 2.5% 2-propanol, pH 12.0, a 5s hydrodynamic injection and a 14kV separation voltage. Two different clean-up methodologies were employed: solid-phase extraction with C(18) cartridges and ion exchange with Amberlite XAD7 resin. Analytes were detected at 360

Macrocephaly-capillary malformation: a report of three cases and review of the literature.

Macrocephaly-Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (M-CMTC) is a rare syndrome that was first delineated as distinct from Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC) in 1997. Since that time, there have been over 75 cases reported in the literature, though few are in the dermatology literature. The syndrome is characterized by macrocephaly, neonatal hypotonia, developmental delay, segmental overgrowth, syndactyly, asymmetry, connective tissue defects, and vascular stains. We report three new patients seen at the University of Miami Genodermatoses Clinic with features of M-CMTC. We bel

A rare vascular tumor of the external auditory canal: the capillary hemangioma.

A 32-year-old woman presented to our department with a 10-month history of right-sided intermittant otorrhagia. There was no history of hearing loss or pulsatile tinnitus. Otomicroscopic examination revealed a reddish mass arising from the right antero-superior portion of bony canal wall, which measured about 1 cm in diameter. The tympanic membrane seemed to be uninvolved. A computed tomography scan of the temporal bone showed 0.6 x 0.8 cm diameter soft-tissue mass arising from the right external auditory canal, 0.5 cm away from tympanic membrane. The lesion was excised via a transcanal approa

[A monoclonal immunoglobulin M not visible on the profile of serum capillary electrophoresis].

We report a case of an invisible monoclonal IgM on the profile of the serum electrophoresis carried out by the Paragon CZE 2000 system. This case is about a 84 years old man followed for a Waldenström disease. The level of the monoclonal IgM given at the time of the preceding visit one year before was 10 g/L. The electrophoresis is reproduced in two other laboratories using respectively the Hydrasys and Capillarys techniques which have both shown the presence of the monoclonal peak. At this occasion the frequency of these anomalies of migration and the recommendations to avoid the erroneous in

Ultrastructure of myocardial capillary endothelium in children with congenital heart disease.

Cardiosurgical stress initiates endothelial injury of the colliquation necrosis type (without activating coagulation necrosis) in coronary capillaries of infants aged under 1 year. The dark cells exhibited high tolerance to operation stress in the presence of labile ultrastructural response of endothelial cells of the main and light types. The percentage of dark cells does not change during surgical intervention, which is a sign predicting a favorable course of the postoperative period.
