PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide a brief overview of our current understanding of the types of neurodevelopmental sequelae in congenital heart disease survivors and to review the most recent studies from the past year, which have focused on 4 interrelated issues: (1) outcome studies, (2) the mechanism and etiology of central nervous system injury in children with CHD, (3) perioperative monitoring for brain injury, and (4) strategies for neuroprotection during cardiac surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This research examined hemodynamic processes in cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) as a function of task, ethnicity and trait hostility.
METHOD: One hundred and fourteen male patrol officers from the Singapore Police Force participated in this experimental study. Trait hostility was measured using the interpersonal hostility assessment technique to derive a hostile behavior index (HBI). Heart rate, blood pressure and hemodynamic measures were taken while participants performed three tasks: mental arithmetic, number reading and anger recall (AR).

Venous central oximetry (ScO2) in high-risk pediatric surgical patients (myopathies, congenital diaphragmatic hernia) is an useful guide to treatment. Serial haemodynamic and systolic time interval measurements in 17 male transsexuals during high-dose oestrogen administration were compared with control values obtained after oestrogen withdrawal. During oestrogen treatment, cardiac output, stroke volume, plasma volume and total blood volume increased while total peripheral resistance, diastolic blood pressure and red cell mass decreased significantly. Cardiac beriberi is considered a rare disease in western society. A patient with fulminant Shoshin-type beriberi was studied in the acute phase and found to have severe metabolic acidosis, high output biventricular failure, and markedly low systemic vascular resistance. Red blood cell transketolase activity was abnormally low. Following treatment with thiamine, diuretics, digitalis and oxygen, all abnormalities disappeared. Refractory septic shock is associated with a high risk of death. Because antepartal and subpartal CTG monitoring is now widespread, fetal cardiac arrhythmias are being diagnosed ever more frequently. BACKGROUND: Primary graft failure (PGF) is the leading cause of early mortality after cardiac transplantation, accounting for 27.1% of deaths within 30 days. PGF is defined as severe dysfunction of the cardiac allograft without any obvious anatomic or immunological cause.
