Cranial nerves as pathways for human cerebrospinal fluid efflux: In vivo evidence.

In vivo evidence for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) efflux along cranial nerves in humans is scarce. This study investigated whether the trigeminal, facial, and vestibulocochlear nerves serve as efflux routes for CSF in humans. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, used as a CSF tracer, was administered intrathecally at the lumbar level, and consecutive MRI acquisitions measured tracer enrichment along the trigeminal, facial, and vestibulocochlear nerves. The study included 27 patients undergoing evaluation for potential CSF disturbances, but none of whom exhibited evidence of CSF path

Activation of tuberculosis in recovered COVID-19 patients: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Currently, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and tuberculosis (TB) are among the most important causes of respiratory infections around the world. Both of them are sources of concern for human health and life safety. COVID-19 caused the deaths of millions of people, and many of them suffered from what has become known as 'post-COVID squeal'. Immunosuppression is one of the most important of these symptoms that leave patients susceptible to severe infections like TB. CASE PRESENTATION: In these two cases, the authors observed the development of active TB after a period of COVID r

Case Report: Recurrent pediatric cavernous malformation of the trigeminal nerve.

BACKGROUND: Most cavernous malformations (CM) usually involve the parenchyma and rarely occur in cranial nerves. Recurrence of CM associated with cranial nerves after surgical resection has not been previously reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: This paper describes the case of an 11-year-old girl who presented with left otalgia and headache because of a left trigeminal cavernous malformation. She underwent radical resection via a left retrosigmoid approach while sparing the trigeminal nerve. Surveillance imaging at 18 months demonstrated recurrence along the length of the trigeminal nerve into Mecke

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) over the Frontopolar Cortex (FPC) Alters the Demand for Precommitment.

Caving into temptation leads to deviation from the planned path, which reduces our performance, adds trouble to our daily life, and can even bring about psychiatric disorders. Precommitment is an effective way to remedy the failure of willpower by removing the tempting short-term option. This paper aims to test the neural mechanisms of precommitment through a monetary task that excluded the interference of heterogeneous individual preferences and complements present researches. We examined whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the frontopolar cortex (FPC) could affect the

Petroclival Meningioma Leading to Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Kawase Approach Application.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia is defined by paroxysmal pain on the trigeminal nerve territory. The petroclival meningioma presents with trigeminal neuralgia in less than 5% of the cases. We report a case of a petroclival meningioma that encased the fifth nerve and was resected through a Kawase approach. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old female patient presented paroxysmal shock pain in malar and ocular region with progressive worsening, evolving with daily crises despite the use of carbamazepine. On neurologic examination the patient was oriented, with no strength or coordination impair

26Al/10Be Burial Dating of the Middle Pleistocene Yiyuan Hominin Fossil Site, Shandong Province, Northern China.

The Yiyuan hominin fossil site is one of the few localities in China where a partial skullcap and several loose teeth of Homo erectus have been discovered. Yiyuan was previously assigned broadly to the Middle Pleistocene by biostratigraphical correlation and ESR/U-series dating. Here, we report the first application of a radio-isotopic dating method to the site. 26Al/10Be burial dating results derived from two sand samples from the fossiliferous deposits show that the hominin fossils can be confidently dated to 0.64 ± 0.08 Ma (million years ago). The reliability of this age is supported by the

Acute forces required for fatal compression asphyxia: A biomechanical model and historical comparisons.

Background Fatalities from acute compression have been reported with soft-drink vending machine tipping, motor vehicle accidents, and trench cave-ins. A major mechanism of such deaths is flail chest but the amount of force required is unclear. Between the range of a safe static chest compression force of 1000 N (102 kg with earth gravity) and a lethal dynamic force of 10-20 kN (falling 450 kg vending machines), there are limited quantitative human data on the force required to cause flail chest, which is a major correlate of acute fatal compression asphyxia. Methods We modeled flail chest as b

Difficult OptEase filter retrievals after prolonged indwelling times.

PURPOSE: The OptEase vena cave filter (Cordis, Piscataway, NJ) is commercially available as a retrievable or permanent filter with short recommended indwelling time, presumably due to extensive contact of the filter side struts with the inferior vena cava wall and subsequent neointimal hyperplasia leading to incorporation. Our purpose was to evaluate OptEase filter retrievals with a long indwelling time period that required unconventional retrieval techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent OptEase filter retrieval with long undwelling times requirin

Ectoparasitic assemblages on mormoopid bats (Chiroptera: Mormoopidae) from Puerto Rico.

We performed the first quantitative survey of ectoparasitic assemblages on three species of mormoopid bats living on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico: Mormoops blainvillii Leach (n=40), Pteronotus quadridens Gundlach (n=40), and Pteronotus parnellii Gray (n=9). We examined bats for parasites primarily on 8-10 May and 24-27 July 2002 at Culebrones Cave, near Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Only 50% of M. blainvillii were infested with at least one parasite, compared with 85-100% for Pteronotus; infested individuals of both species of Pteronotus also harbored a greater number of parasites than did M. b

MRI findings in the patients with the presumptive clinical diagnosis of Tolosa-Hunt syndrome.

The aim of this study was to present our experience in MRI diagnosis of 23 patients with the clinical findings suggesting Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS). Cranial MRI studies of the patients with a clinical history of at least one episode of unilateral or bilateral orbital and periorbital pain, and associated paresis of one or more of third to sixth cranial nerves, were performed on a 1.5-T MRI scanner. Whereas 5 patients had the diagnosis of THS, paracavernous meningiomas in 4 patients, pituitary macroadenomas with cavernous sinus infiltration in 3 patients, Meckel's cave neurinoma in 1 patient, a

Transalar sphenoidal encephalocele and respiratory distress in a neonate: a case report.

We present a full-term newborn infant who suffered from immediate postpartum severe respiratory distress. The infant had an inspiratory stridor as a result of a swelling of the soft palate, extending from the roof of the nasopharynx. Transoral endotracheal intubation resulted in normal saturation levels. Histologic examination after an open biopsy showed mature neuroglial tissue. Radiology demonstrated the presence of a right parapharyngeal process obstructing the nasopharynx and oropharynx and extending to the right middle and posterior fossa, via the foramen ovale. After transoral debulking,

[Sheaths of cranial nerves in the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus. An embryological and anatomical study].

The present study has been carried out in order to better understand the so-called cavernous sinus lateral wall anatomy. Special attention has been drawn at the sheaths of the cranial nerves running through it. Serial sections of the parasellar region of four human embryos (7, 10, 11, 12 week-old), two fetuses (14 week-old and 7 month-old), one adult and cadaveric microdissections (14 cavernous sinus) have been used. We could observe that the oculomotor and the trochlear nerve possess meningeal sheaths, which accompany the nerves into the parasellar lodge up to the anterior clinoid process for

[A successful surgical case of bilateral partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection without atrial septal defect].

We performed the new operative method for bilateral partial anomalous pulmonary connections (PAPVC) without atrial septal defect (ASD). A 11-years-old boy was admitted for operation. The right upper pulmonary vein returned to the superior vena cave (SVC), and left upper pulmonary vein returned to the innominate vein. Atrial septum was intact. The Qp/Qs was 1.94. The right atrium (RA) was opened and ASD was created. Continuity between the distal end of the SVC and RA was re-established by end-to-end anastomosis to the right atrial appendage. The proximal end of the SVC was closed. The right ano

Espanto: a dialogue with the gods.

Espanto or susto has been analysed from various points of view in the last fifteen years. From a survey covering 109 case analyses collected in Nicolas Ruiz (Chiapas, Mexico), we reached the conclusion that this folk illness cannot be conceived of as a syndrome in the medical sense. A semiological analysis showed that espanto can be better described as an indigenous theory whose function is to relate illness events to other levels of reality. According to indigenous belief, the Holy Earth and the chtonian spirits of the underworld play an important role in the origin of the illness. This origi

Osteosclerotic disease and bone cyst in a prehispanic burial from Las Cañadas del Teide (Tenerife, Canary Islands).

Skeletal remains of two prehispanic male adult individuals (antiquity ≈ 550 BP) recovered from a burial cave located in Montaña Blanca (Las Cañadas del Teide) at an altitude of 2450 m above sea level, in the highlands of Tenerife (Canary Islands) showed some unusual features. Femora and tibiae of both individuals showed increased bone density, with irregular thickening of the midshaft diaphyses. One individual showed a cystic lesion in the distal third of the left femoral diaphysis, surrounded by a subtle sclerotic reaction of the spongiosa and a thin cortex that was partially fractured. The Transformation of the Balloon Shape in Percutaneous Balloon Compression for Trigeminal Neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: The pear shape of an inflated balloon is thought to be a gold standard of successful percutaneous balloon compression (PBC). However, neither how nor why it changes in that way (the anatomic basis) has not yet been fully described. AIM: In this article, we try to describe how the balloon in Meckel's cave (MC) should appear and why; and identify which shapes are good pear shapes, which shapes are not good pear shapes, and which shapes are intermediate. METHODS: Radiographs from over 150 percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) cases were thoroughly evaluated. We proposed a model of

Synchronized shift of oral, faecal and urinary microbiotas in bats and natural infection dynamics during seasonal reproduction.

Seasonal reproduction is a period of extreme physiological and behavioural changes, yet we know little about how it may affect host microbial communities (i.e. microbiota) and pathogen transmission. Here, we investigated shifts of the bacterial microbiota in saliva, urine and faeces during the seasonal reproduction of bats in South Africa, and test for an interaction in shedding patterns of both bacterial (Leptospira) and viral (adeno- and herpesviruses) agents. Based on a comparative approach in two cave-dwelling bat species and high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, we demonstrated

Studying the Evolution of the Vertebrate Circadian Clock: The Power of Fish as Comparative Models.

The utility of any model species cannot be judged solely in terms of the tools and approaches it provides for genetic analysis. A fundamental consideration is also how its biology has been shaped by the environment and the ecological niche which it occupies. By comparing different species occupying very different habitats we can learn how molecular and cellular mechanisms change during evolution in order to optimally adapt to their environment. Such knowledge is as important as understanding how these mechanisms work. This is illustrated by the use of fish models for studying the function and
