In bacterial strains containing the deoxyribonuclease endonuclease I (endonuclease I(+) strains), 70 to 80% of the injected superinfecting T-even phage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is rapidly degraded to oligonucleotides having an average chain length of 8, the same value as that obtained by endonuclease I digestion of purified T-even phage DNA in vitro. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry specific proteins involved in intercellular communication. EVs with different protein contents are released into circulation in different diseases. Recent studies have identified proteins in adenomyosis (AM)-derived EVs (AMEVs) from blood as biomarkers for this disease. AM is an extension of endometrial tissue into the uterine myometrium. OBJECTIVE: To explore the Fc receptor-dependent handling of immune complexes (ICs) by the fixed mononuclear phagocytic systems (MPS) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
METHODS: The processing in vivo of soluble model (123)I-hepatitis B/ anti-hepatitis B ICs was studied in 12 healthy subjects and 10 patients with active SLE. ICs that fixed complement poorly were prepared specifically in order to explore Fc receptor-dependent clearance mechanisms. Monospecific rabbit and goat antisera to human complement proteins and human immunoglobulins were tested for their ability to activate the alternative complement pathway. This activation was detected by two methods where classical pathway activation was blocked with EGTA and alternative pathway activation was promoted with added magnesium ions. These two methods consisted of lysis of GSHE and conversion of factor B into split products. C1q-depleted serum was used in a third assay system. Only antiserum to human factor B was able to activate the alternative pathway in the various systems used.

Forty-eight patients with erythema chronicum migrans (ECM) were studied prospectively for 6 to 18 months. Twenty-six patients had no later symptoms, but 22 subsequently developed Lyme arthritis and 9 of them also experienced neurologic abnormalities. Eighty-seven percent of patients with active ECM followed by subsequent involvement had cryoglobulins containing IgM compared to only 13% of those with active ECM and no later symptoms. Experiments were performed to determine the specificity of [(125)I]alpha-bungarotoxin binding to skeletal muscle. In adult rat diaphragm, [(125)I]alpha-bungarotoxin was found to bind almost exclusively to those regions of the muscle that contain endplates and are known to be sensitive to acetylcholine.
