BACKGROUND: Internally displaced populations (IDPs) in Somalia face a disproportionate burden of poor maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) outcomes due to conflict, recurrent displacement, poverty, and weak health systems. Evidence on the barriers and facilitators influencing MNCH service utilization in these settings remains fragmented.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the available evidence on barriers and facilitators affecting utilization of MNCH services among IDPs in Somalia, with a focus on antenatal care, skilled delivery, postnatal care, immunization, and care-seeking for childhood ill…

BACKGROUND: Bereavement following the death of a child represents one of the most severe forms of human loss. The loss of a child is a profoundly devastating life event that places mothers at heightened risk of mental health problems. This risk is often amplified in settings characterized by high child mortality and limited access to mental health services. However, nationally representative data from low- and middle-income countries remain limited.
METHODS: Using the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey, we analyzed 2276 bereaved mothers who had experienced the death of at least one

Effective mental health policies for children and adolescents rely on accurate evaluations of psychiatric disorder prevalence; however, no nationally representative epidemiological studies on psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents have been conducted in South Korea. This study examined the prevalence and socio-demographic factors of mental disorders among Korean children and adolescents aged 6-17 years using web-based DSM-5 diagnostic tools, the computerized version of the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. Between September 2022 and February 2023, 142 int

To date, no studies have examined the relationship between maternal dietary intake during pregnancy and the risk of depressive symptoms during adolescence in their children. The current prebirth cohort study investigated the association between maternal calcium intake during pregnancy and the risk of depressive symptoms in adolescent children. Study subjects were 873 mother-child pairs. Maternal calcium intake during pregnancy was assessed using a self-administered diet history questionnaire. Adolescent depressive symptoms were defined as a 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression S

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of parents who completed online screening tools about their child's health, development, and well-being, and parents' experiences with the public health nurse's handling of this information during a well-child visit for children aged 0 to 7 years. Twenty well-child visits were observed, and 16 parents were interviewed individually or in pairs using a semi-structured interview guide. The parents' experiences were explored using reflexive thematic analyses of verbatim transcripts and field notes. Five main themes were developed; Experiencing Ea

Key nutritional behaviors during the first 1000 days of development (pregnancy to age 2) can affect a child's risks for obesity and related negative health conditions. Because social disadvantage can pose substantial barriers to engaging in healthy lifestyle behaviors and increase obesity risk, it's particularly important to help families facing such circumstances support optimal early nutrition. Although some studies have found relevant health messaging to be effective, little previous research has focused on the mechanisms underlying successful messaging. The current study involved semi-stru

Background: Long-term mental health support is not routinely offered to families of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) graduates treated for non-cardiac congenital anomalies. This may reflect the paucity of evidence-based guidance for clinical practice in these diagnostic groups. Objective: This systematic review aimed to explore long-term mental health outcomes of NICU graduates and their parents, following treatment for non-cardiac congenital anomalies. Methods: A systematic review of empirical literature was conducted for the following diagnoses: congenital diaphragmatic hernia, oesophageal

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize trends in office-based, mental health-related physician visits of children and adolescents.
METHODS: This descriptive, repeated cross-sectional study analyzed visits (unweighted N=43,790) of children and adolescents, ages 4-17, in the 2005-2019 waves of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, an annual nationally representative survey of U.S. office-based physician visits. The analysis estimated changes in the proportion of visits involving any psychiatric diagnosis, specific diagnoses, and psychiatric medications.
RESULTS: The average yearly

Parents of autistic children experience significant parenting stress, which is prospectively associated with increases in child externalizing behaviors. However, family factors that place specific families at risk for experiencing the negative impacts of parenting stress on child externalizing behaviors have not been identified. The present study examined whether parental mental health moderates the association between parenting stress and child externalizing behaviors. Parents of 501 autistic children (Mage=5.16yrs) completed the Parenting Stress Index and Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory. Par

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among children under five years of age is a major public health issue in many low and middle-income constrained countries. According to WHO, 5.3 million under-five children die every year and about 45% of these deaths are linked to malnutrition. While it is clear that poverty and lack of food are important factors in children's malnutrition, less is known about the ways in which local conceptions of malnutrition affect parents' treatment choices. In Ethiopia, child malnutrition is a severe public health problem and a common cause of child death, and this paper explores

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 impacted global maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes. We hypothesised that the early, strict lockdown that restricted individuals' movements in Uganda limited access to services.
METHODS: An observational study, using routinely collected data from Electronic Medical Records, was carried out, in Kawempe district, Kampala. An interrupted time series analysis assessed the impact on maternal, neonatal, child, sexual and reproductive health services from July 2019 to December 2020. Descriptive statistics summarised the main outcomes before (July 2019-March 2020), durin…

In pregnancy, iron deficiency and iron overload increase the risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, but the effects of maternal iron status on long-term child health are poorly understood. The aim of the study was to systematically review and analyze the literature on maternal iron status in pregnancy and long-term outcomes in the offspring after birth. We report a systematic review on maternal iron status during pregnancy in relation to child health outcomes after birth, from database inception until 21 January 2021, with methodological quality rating (Newcastle-Ottawa tool) and random-effect m…

INTRODUCTION: Male involvement in maternal and child health is a practice wherein fathers and male community members actively participate in caring for women and supporting their family to access better health services. There is positive association between male involvement and better maternal and child health outcomes. However, the practice is not always practiced optimally, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where women may not have access to economic resources and decision-making power.
AIM: This study investigates how key stakeholders within the health system in Uganda engage…

INTRODUCTION: Wealth-related inequalities in reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health have been widely studied by dividing the population into quintiles. We present a comprehensive analysis of wealth inequalities for the composite coverage index (CCI) using national health surveys carried out since 2010, using wealth deciles and absolute income estimates as stratification variables, and show how these new approaches expand on traditional equity analyses.
METHODS: 83 low-income and middle-income countries were studied. The CCI is a combined measure of coverage with eight key reproduct…

The aim of the current study was to identify patterns of child maltreatment experienced prior to age 18 and examine the relationship between those patterns and substance use and mental health disorders among emerging adults. Data were from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III. The analytic sample consisted of 5,194 adults between 18 to 25 years old. Latent class analysis revealed a 3-class model: Rare Maltreatment (59%); Occasional Maltreatment, Rare Sexual Abuse (37%); and Frequent Maltreatment, Some Sexual Abuse (4%). Risk for substance use disorders and po

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the baseline levels of training, knowledge and confidence working in the area of family violence in staff at a public child and maternal health service in Melbourne, Australia, as well as perceived staff barriers to working effectively in this area. This study also aimed to explore the client perception of existing screening practices.
BACKGROUND: Family violence is a global concern with pregnancy and the postnatal period times of particularly high risk. Child and maternal health services are well placed to screen for violence, yet clinician and client percep

The purpose of this study was to examine associations between three subtypes of childhood maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, and exposure to intimate partner violence) and two forms of adult police contact (criminality, victimization) using nationally representative Canadian data. Presence of a mental health disorder was also explored as a potential mediating variable in these associations. The weighted sample included 23,846 adult participants from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health. Logistic and multinomial regression analyses examined associations among individ

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health status among both pregnant and postpartum women is commonly reported worldwide. The associations between mental health outcomes and giving birth to the second child since the implementation of China's universal two-child policy have not been identified.
METHODS: A large-scale based mental health survey was conducted between March 2017 and December 2018 in Suzhou, China. The survey evaluated the symptoms of anxiety, hypomania, depression and poor sleep quality among both pregnant and postpartum women.
RESULTS: A total of 3113 questionnaires were collected, the p

Physical safety is a primary concern among homeless youth because they struggle to secure basic necessities and a permanent place to live. Despite this, studies have not fully examined the numerous linkages that might explain risk for victimization within the context of material insecurity. In this study, we examine multiple levels of both proximal and distal risk factors at the individual (e.g. mental health), family (e.g. child abuse), and environmental levels (e.g. finding necessities) and their associations with physical and sexual street victimization among 150 Midwestern homeless youth.
