Caregivers' perceptions following gastrostomy in severely disabled children with feeding problems.

Feeding difficulties are common in neurologically impaired children, often leading to great distress and frustration in the child and family. A gastrostomy may be advocated if oral intake is inadequate causing poor weight gain or when there is significant aspiration during feeding, or if feeding is very distressing. To find out if caregivers were happy with the outcome of gastrostomy (with fundoplication, when indicated), a 35-item questionnaire was developed and sent to 38 of them. Twenty-nine replies were received and appeared to be representative of the whole group. Coughing, choking, and v

Electro-oculographic recordings reveal reading deficiencies in learning disabled children.

This study was undertaken in order to learn the functional differences in reading tasks between two groups of children: those identified as learning disabled and a group of control children. During the earliest stages of learning to read, children adopt a logographic strategy, in which letter order is ignored and phonologic factors are secondary. The children later move into an alphabetic and then to an orthographic reading stage. Reading strategies can be studied by electro-oculographic (EOG) recordings during text reading. This investigation uses EOG to study text reading time, and number of

Family history of handedness and language problems in Mexican reading-disabled children.

A sample of 120 Spanish-speaking children, 60 with reading disabilities and 60 normal readers was studied. Individual and family history of handedness, language problems, and reading disabilities were analyzed in each case. The results suggest that reading disabilities are more common among boys, that associated language problems are frequent and that handedness is not a significant factor. Insofar as family history is concerned, there were more affected families and relatives in the reading disabled group than in the control group. Finally an association was established between the variables

Neuropsychological characteristics of children with Tourette syndrome: evidence for a nonverbal learning disability?

In this study the neuropsychological characteristics of thirty-one 6 to 16-year-old children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) were compared to 20 normal siblings and 10 children with arithmetic disabilities (AD) who were comparable in age and socioeconomic status. Unlike the sibling group, neuropsychological profiles of the TS and AD groups were expected to reflect nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD). The three groups performed generally within the average range on academic and cognitive measures. Like the AD children, the TS group demonstrated poorer performance on written arithmetic tasks with

Breaking bad news to parents with disabled children--a cross-cultural study.

This cross-cultural retrospective study investigates the problems parents experience when told that their child is physically and/or mentally disabled. The authors try to compare, where relevant, some of the responses of the parents from different ethnic groups. The parents of 40 randomly selected coloured, 26 white and 24 black pre-school children who were first seen at the Developmental Assessment Clinic at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa between January 1989 and December 1990 were asked to participate in this study. The final sample comprised 65 chi

Look through the parents' eyes. Helping parents of children with a learning disability.

1. The loss suffered by parents of children with learning disabilities is similar in some ways to a grief response, and must be clearly acknowledged. 2. While forming an identifiable group, parents of children with learning disabilities have individual abilities and needs both as people and as parents. 3. Adjusting to life with a child with a learning disability is often a long process marked by times of crisis, when extra professional intervention may be necessary. 4. Parents and professionals can work together, learning from each other and ultimately increasing the quality of life for the pe

Teaching developmentally disabled children with chronic illness to swallow prescribed capsules.

Child noncompliance with prescribed medical regimens, including nonacceptance of oral medication, frequently impedes medical treatment and achievement of clinical aims. During this study, we used a single-subject experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of a capsule-swallowing training curriculum specifically developed to promote acceptance of oral medication by multihandicapped children. Four such children participated, each diagnosed with a chronic pediatric illness requiring daily intake of oral medication. Training consisted of verbal instruction, demonstration, reinforcement for

Disability parameters, chronic strain, and adaptation of physically handicapped children and their mothers.

Investigated the contribution of disability parameters and chronic disability-related strain to the adaptation of 50 congenitally physically handicapped 6- to 11-year-old children and their mothers. Multiple dimensions of adaptation, disability status, and chronic disability-related strain were assessed with a variety of procedures. The mothers reported their children and themselves to display significantly worse adaptation than expected for a general sample. The adaptation of these children and their mothers, however, was not significantly related to the children's disability status nor the c

The effect of reinforcement and verbal rehearsal on selective attention in learning-disabled children.

A central-incidental task of selective attention was administered to 100 learning-disabled boys--48 younger children (8 1/2-10 1/2 years) and 52 older children (10 1/2-12 1/2 years). Subjects at both age levels were assigned to one of four conditions: (a) a standard condition; (b) a rehearsal condition, in which subjects were taught a verbal rehearsal strategy; (c) a reinforcement condition, in which correct responses were rewarded; and (d) a combined rehearsal-reinforcement condition. Older subjects recalled more central task but not more incidental task information than younger subjects. A m

Association between nystagmus hyporesponsivity and behavioral problems in learning-disabled children.

This study explored the hypothesis that an association exists between postrotary nystagmus hyporesponsivity and behavioral problems in learning-disabled children. Supporting this conclusion was the finding that the learning-disabled boys rated by teachers as displaying the most socially inappropriate behaviors had significantly lower postrotary nystagmus durations than other learning-disabled boys. In addition, near significant associations were obtained between subnormal nystagmus functioning and socially inappropriate responding for boys and girls combined. Learning-disabled girls were evalu

The assessment of developmentally disabled children with the WISC-R, Binet and other tests.

Administered the WISC-R, Revised Stanford-Binet, Bender, VMI, and WRAT to 50 children referred for a multidisciplinary evaluation of developmental disabilities. The correlations among the various WISC-R measures (Standard Scores and IQs) and Binet IQ were significant, with relatively strong relationships among the Binet IQ and those WISC-R subtests that require concentration, short-term auditory memory, visual-motor integration, and the acquisition of new learning. Data showed that the Binet MA correlated as well or better with the other tests than did the various scores from the WISC-R.

Effects of Aquatic Exercise on Balance, Motor Function and Neuromuscular Performance in Children and Young Adults with Disabilities: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Aquatic therapy is widely used in pediatric rehabilitation because buoyancy and water resistance facilitate movement practice under reduced gravitational load. The Halliwick Method is a prominent approach; however, its effects on balance, motor function, and neuromuscular performance in children and young adults with disabilities have not been comprehensively synthesized. This systematic review summarized the effects of Halliwick aquatic therapy and aquatic exercise on balance, strength, and functional mobility in this population. Methods: This review followed Cochrane a

Improving family functioning and wellbeing among families of children with disabilities in Rwanda: an application of the SAFE child protection model.

BACKGROUND: Families of children with disabilities in low-resource settings face heightened challenges to family functioning and wellbeing. Improving a child and caregiver's environment in these settings requires a broader understanding of the family ecosystem. This study aims to investigate factors that should be considered to enhance family functioning and inform family-centered interventions. METHODOLOGY: We conducted 34 in-depth interviews with 30 caregivers of children with disabilities aged 6-8 years enrolled in a larger cluster randomized trial of the Sugira Muryango parenting interven…

The role of psychological assessment and family support in enhancing emotional well-being and academic performance of children with learning disabilities.

Children with learning disabilities often face significant emotional and academic challenges due to inadequate assessment and support systems. This study examines the impact of psychological assessment on anxiety, emotional well-being, and academic performance, with the moderating influence of intervention strategies, physical health, and family support. In this study, the term 'psychological assessment of children with learning disabilities' refers to scores obtained from validated standardized scales capturing students' academic difficulties, rather than clinical diagnosis of learning disabi
