Insulin sensitizing effects of oligomannuronate-chromium (III) complexes in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells.

BACKGROUND: It was known that the insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is a major pathogenic factor in diabetes mellitus. Therefore prevention of metabolic disorder caused by insulin resistance and improvement of insulin sensitivity are very important for the therapy of type 2 diabetes. In the present study, we investigated the ability of marine oligosaccharides oligomannuronate and its chromium (III) complexes from brown alga to enhance insulin sensitivity in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We demonstrated that oligomannuronate, especially its chromium (III) com…

cis-[1,2-Bis(diphenyl-arsan-yl)ethane-κAs,As']tetra-carbonyl-chromium(0).

In the title compound, [Cr(C(26)H(24)As(2))(CO)(4)], the Cr atom is octa-hedrally coordinated by four carbonyl ligands and one bidentate 1,2-bis-(diphenyl-arsan-yl)ethane ligand, which chelates in a cis manner with an As-Cr-As bite angle of 82.513 (9)°. The dihedral angles between the pairs of benzene rings attached to each As atom are 84.63 (9) and 77.15 (8)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O inter-actions, forming infinite chains along the a axis. The crystal structure is further stabilized by C-H⋯π inter-actions.

Comparative genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of four hexavalent chromium compounds in human bronchial cells.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) compounds are well-established human lung carcinogens. Solubility plays an important role in their carcinogenicity with the particulate Cr(VI) compounds being the most carcinogenic. Epidemiology and animal studies suggest that zinc chromate is the most potent particulate Cr(VI) compound; however, there are few comparative data to support these observations. The purpose of this study was to compare the genotoxicity of zinc chromate with two other particulate Cr(VI) compounds, barium chromate and lead chromate, and one soluble Cr(VI) compound, sodium chromate. The cl…

Hypoxia-like effect of cobalt chromium alloy micro particles on fibroblasts in vitro.

Periprosthetic osteolysis leading to asceptic loosening remains the primary cause of failure of joint replacement. Although many inflammatory cell types have been implicated, the exact pathomechanisms of asceptic loosening have not been delineated. In the present study we have adopted a proteomic approach to elucidate the initial signals that are expressed to particulate material, using an in vitro cell culture system. Human lung fibroblasts MRC-5 were cultured with Cobalt Chromium (CoCr ASTM F-75, 1-7 µm) particles. Cells were harvested after 72 h incubation and total cellular proteins extrac…

[Adsorption of chromium (VI) from aqueous solution on bentonite modified by cationic polymers].

Two cationic polymer-epicholorohydrin dimethylamine (EPI-DMA) and poly dimethyldlammonium (PDMDAAC) as the intercalary reagents were used to prepare a series of bentonites (EPI-DMA/Bt and PDMDAAC/Bt) modified by the cationic polymers, respectively. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on cationic polymer/bentonite and major influencing factors were studied. The results show that the sorption capacity of Cr (VI) is increased more than five times compared with the original one. The load of cationic polymers in bentonites, the dosing quantity of EPI-DMA/Bt and PDMDAAC/Bt, the solution pH, temperature (T), ti

Three-dimensional morphology control during wet chemical synthesis of porous chromium oxide spheres.

Controlling the morphological evolution in nanostructures is essential for improving their functionality, for example, in catalysis. Here, we demonstrate, using chromium oxide as a model system, that morphologies of functional binary oxide particles can be tailored by an efficient template-free synthetic approach. We construct a morphological "phase diagram" for chromium oxide spheres that shows the evolution of size and surface roughness as a function of the precursor and urea concentrations. It is notable that these chromium oxide spheres show an exceptional ability to remove azo-dye polluta…

Extraction of hexavalent chromium from chromated copper arsenate treated wood under alkaline conditions.

Information on chromium (Cr) oxidation states is essential for the assessment of environmental and health risks associated with the overall life-cycle of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated wood products because of differences in toxicity between trivalent [Cr(III)] and hexavalent [Cr(VI)] chromium compounds. Hypothetical Cr(VI) fixation products were investigated in CCA type C treated sawdust of aspen and red pine during or following preservative fixation by extraction with Cr(VI)-specific extractants. Cr(VI) was found only in alkaline extracts of treated wood. A major source of Cr(VI) wa…

Simultaneous removal of chromium and leather dye from simulated tannery effluent by photoelectrochemistry.

The feasibility of the photobleaching of a leather acid dye, acid red 151, simultaneously to degradation of anionic surfactant, Tamol, and reduction of Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III) was investigated by photoelectrocatalytic oxidation. The best experimental conditions were found to be pH 2.0 and 0.1 mol L(-1) sodium sulfate when the nanoporous Ti/TiO2 photo anode was biased at +1.0 V and submitted to UV-irradiation. The photoelectrocatalytic oxidation promotes 100% discoloration, reducing around 98-100% of Cr(VI) and achieving an abatement of 95% of the original total organic carbon. The eff

Serum cobalt and chromium elevations following hip resurfacing with the Cormet 2000 device.

This study was designed to monitor serum cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) levels at multiple time points following hip resurfacing with the Cormet 2000 device. Serum samples were obtained preoperatively, at 6 months, 1, 2, and 3 years after surgery. Co/Cr levels (micro g/L) were determined by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Thirty-five subjects were followed. Median preoperative Co/Cr levels were 0.21 and 0.22, respectively. Serum levels following device implantation were increased at all follow-up time points when compared to preoperative controls. Peak levels were …

Low-molecular-weight chromium-binding substance from chicken liver and American alligator liver.

Low-molecular-weight chromium-binding substance (LMWCr), also known as chromodulin, is a chromium-binding oligopeptide proposed to have a function in chromium transport and insulin signaling in mammals. In this work, LMWCr has been isolated and purified for the first time from non-mammalian sources: chicken and American alligator. Milligram quantities of the oligopeptide can be obtained from kilogram quantities of liver. The LMWCr's from both sources are asparatate- and glutamate-rich oligopeptides which possess multinuclear chromium assemblies. The composition and physical and spectroscopic p…

Synthesis and structure characterization of chromium oxide prepared by solid thermal decomposition reaction.

Mesoporous chromium oxide (Cr2O3) nanocrystals were first synthesized by the thermal decomposition reaction of Cr(NO3)3.9H2O using citric acid monohydrate (CA) as the mesoporous template agent. The texture and chemistry of chromium oxide nanocrystals were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis, and thermoanalytical methods. It was shown that the hydrate water and CA are the crucial factors in influencing the formation of mesoporous Cr2O3 nanocrystals in the mixture system. The decomposition of CA results in the formation of a mesoporous struc…

Chromium(V) complexes generated in Arthrobacter oxydans by simulation analysis of EPR spectra.

Chromium(V) is an intermediate formed during the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) compounds by various bacteria. However, little is known about the nature, localization and reactivity of Cr(V) species in microbial systems. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was used to study the nature of Cr(V) complexes generated in basalt-inhabiting Gram-positive Arthrobacter oxydans bacteria after exposure to high concentrations of Cr(VI). Numerical simulations of the EPR spectroscopic data provide strong evidence for at least two different diolato-type oxoCr(V) complexes (I, g(iso)=1.9801; II…

Crystalline hydrous ferric oxide: an adsorbent for chromium(VI)-contaminated industrial wastewater treatment.

Synthetic crystalline hydrous ferric oxide (CHFO) (particle size 0.14 to 0.29 mm) has been used systematically for adsorptive chromium(VI) removal from contaminated water. Batch experiments were performed as a function of pH, contact time, solute concentration, and regeneration of adsorbents. Column experiments were performed for breakthrough points in the presence and absence of other ions and treatment of industrial effluent. The optimum pH range was 2.0 to 4.0. The adsorption kinetic data could be described well by both second-order and pseudo-first-order models. The isotherm adsorption dat…

Synthesis of a stable compound with fivefold bonding between two chromium(I) centers.

Although in principle transition metals can form bonds with six shared electron pairs, only quadruply bonded compounds can be isolated as stable species at room temperature. Here we show that the reduction of {Cr(mu-Cl)Ar'}2 [where Ar' indicates C6H3-2,6(C6H3-2,6-Pri2)2 and Pr indicates isopropyl] with a slight excess of potassium graphite has produced a stable compound with fivefold chromium-chromium (Cr-Cr) bonding. The very air- and moisture-sensitive dark red crystals of Ar'CrCrAr' were isolated with greater than 40% yield. X-ray diffraction revealed a Cr-Cr bond length of 1.8351(4) angstr…

A chromium terephthalate-based solid with unusually large pore volumes and surface area.

We combined targeted chemistry and computational design to create a crystal structure for porous chromium terephthalate, MIL-101, with very large pore sizes and surface area. Its zeotype cubic structure has a giant cell volume (approximately 702,000 cubic angstroms), a hierarchy of extra-large pore sizes (approximately 30 to 34 angstroms), and a Langmuir surface area for N2 of approximately 5900 +/- 300 square meters per gram. Beside the usual properties of porous compounds, this solid has potential as a nanomold for monodisperse nanomaterials, as illustrated here by the incorporation of Keggi…

The role of humic substances in chromium sorption onto natural organic matter (peat).

To elucidate mechanisms of Cr3+ sorption onto the unaltered solid natural organic matter, the comparative studies of this ion binding from a solution at pH 4.0 onto three selected particle size fractions: 2000-1000 microm, 630-200 microm and 63-20 microm of markedly different HS content and structure, separated by a wet sieving from an overall sample of peat (Brushwood Peat Humus) were carried out. Comparable patterns of COOH groups and CEC(t) confirmed that for cation exchange capacity were responsible mainly cations connected with COO- functional groups. It was though found that aliphatic ac
