Modelling the interplay of future changes and wastewater management measures on the microbiological river water quality considering safe drinking water production.

Rivers are important for drinking water supply worldwide. However, they are often impacted by pathogen discharges via wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and combined sewer overflows (CSO). To date, accurate predictions of the effects of future changes and pollution control measures on the microbiological water quality of rivers considering safe drinking water production are hindered due to the uncertainty of the pathogen source and transport variables. The aim of this study was to test an integrative approach for an improved understanding of these effects, i.e. climate change and population gr

Models and input parameters for the estimation of heat-related excess mortality: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify existing methodological approaches and input parameters to estimate heat-related excess mortality based on real-case human populations from studies conducted worldwide. INTRODUCTION: Human-induced climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of heat waves, leading to a rise in heat-related deaths globally. As direct measurement of heat-related mortality is challenging, many countries have implemented a statistical model to estimate excess deaths, with ongoing efforts to refine it. An overview of methodological approaches and input pa

Statistical power and the detection of global change responses: The case of leaf production in old-growth forests.

Forests sequester a substantial portion of anthropogenic carbon emissions. Many open questions concern how. We address two of these questions. Has leaf and fine litter production changed? And what is the contribution of old-growth forests? We address these questions with long-term records (≥10 years) of total, reproductive, and especially foliar fine litter production from 32 old-growth forests. We expect increases in forest productivity associated with rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and, in cold climates, with rising temperatures. We evaluate the statistical power of our ana

Modeling wheat productivity under elevated CO2 using fuzzy logic and mycorrhizal inoculation.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the complex interactions between plants, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) is crucial for enhancing agricultural sustainability and productivity, particularly in the face of future climate change. While elevated CO2 concentrations can influence AMF colonization development, AMF are known to benefit plants by improving nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus, enhancing drought tolerance, and increasing resistance to certain soil-borne pathogens. These beneficial effects of AMF can potentially mitigate some of the negative impacts of

Climate impacts on blacklegged tick host-seeking behavior.

The nymph of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis), the primary North American vector of the causative agent of Lyme disease, must attach to a host by the end of its questing season in order to feed and subsequently molt into an adult. The proper timing of this behavior is critical both for the tick's survival and for perpetuating the transmission of tick-borne pathogens. Questing also depletes limited nymphal lipid reserves and increases desiccation risk. Given this tradeoff, questing behavior and its environmental influences can be expressed in a dynamic state variable model. We develop w

Correlation between clonorchiasis incidences and climatic factors in Guangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Human infection with Clonorchis sinensis is still a big public health problem in Guangzhou. To investigate the correlation between clonorchiasis and climatic factors, we analyzed the clonorchiasis reported cases and simultaneous meteorological data during 2006-2012 in Guangzhou City, China. FINDINGS: Annual incidence rate of clonorchiasis from 2006 to 2012 was 166.76, 191.55, 247.37, 213.82, 246.03, 274.71, and 239.63 (per 100 000), respectively. Each 1°C rise of temperature corresponded to an increase of 1.18% (95% CI 0.88% to 1.48%) in the monthly number of cases, and a one mill

[Design and application of an experimental device for constructing a exertional heatstroke model in mice].

Exertional heatstroke is defined as a serious clinical syndrome typically characterized by impaired thermoregulation in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, resulting in heat production exceeding heat dissipation, causing core body temperature to exceed 40 centigrade, accompanied by central nervous system dysfunction and multi-organ failure. At present, the commonly used exertional heatstroke animal model is to put mice on a treadmill to run under high temperature and humidity conditions, but additional electrical stimulation is required to maintain the continuous running state of

The Climate-Health Divide: How Climate Change Will Rewire Health Care Across High-, Middle-, and Low-Income Settings.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly recognised not only as an environmental emergency but also as a structural determinant of health and health-system performance. Its clinical consequences will not be distributed evenly: high-income countries face rising heat mortality, infrastructure fragility, ageing-related vulnerability, and the need to decarbonise technologically intensive care; middle- and low-income countries face heterogeneous but often more compressed combinations of heat, infectious disease, food insecurity, water stress, displacement, conflict-related fragility, and limited

Climate variability and warming in Coastal Odisha: assessing interannual temperature trends and impacts.

Coastal Odisha, strategically positioned between the Bay of Bengal and a vast inland landmass, is highly susceptible to climate change and variability impacts. This study comprehensively examines interannual temperature variability and its relationship with mean seasonal temperature using 54 years of homogenised surface meteorological data (1969-2022) from seven WMO-standard meteorological stations. To assess inter-annual variability in association with mean seasonal temperature and precipitation, a difference of standard deviations (SD) of two periods (e.g. 1969-1996 and 1995-2022) along with

Training a Model to Predict Asymbiotic Germination of Orchid Seeds on the Basis of Subfamily, Seed Morphology and Niche Profile.

Although asymbiotic orchid seed germination was first achieved in vitro in 1922, the prediction of germination requirements under in vitro conditions still remains complicated. To address this, we developed a machine learning framework to classify the ex situ asymbiotic germination potential of wild orchids into four discrete groups: Low (0-30%), Mid (31-50%), High (51-80%), and Max (81-100%). Models were trained on a dataset of 203 species, utilizing seed morphometrics-specifically, the embryo-to-testa (E:S) length ratio-alongside core ecological traits (subfamily, growth habit, habitat, and

Predictive intelligence for future vibriosis risk in the eastern United States employing Bayesian spatial modeling.

UNLABELLED: Vibrio spp. infections have increased significantly over recent decades. Advances in remote sensing and understanding of environmental parameters driving increased proliferation of pathogenic Vibrio spp. have enabled development of predictive risk models. Here, we implement Bayesian spatial modeling (INLA-SPDE) to forecast infection risks for six vibrio species-V. alginolyticus, V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139, V. fluvialis, V. mimicus, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. vulnificus-and their combined burden, i.e., non-cholera vibriosis, along the United States eastern seaboard. Using reports

Uncovering temperature sensitivity of West Nile virus transmission: Novel computational approaches to mosquito-pathogen trait responses.

Temperature influences the transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens with significant implications for disease risk under climate change. Mathematical models of mosquito-borne infections rely on functions that capture mosquito-pathogen interactions in response to temperature to accurately estimate transmission dynamics. For deriving these functions, experimental studies provide valuable data on the temperature sensitivity of mosquito life-history traits and pathogen transmission. However, the scarcity of experimental data and inconsistencies in methodologies for analysing temperature responses

Soil dust aerosols and wind as predictors of seasonal meningitis incidence in Niger.

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis are concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season, a period when the region is affected by the Harmattan, a dry and dusty northeasterly trade wind blowing from the Sahara into the Gulf of Guinea. OBJECTIVES: We examined the potential of climate-based statistical forecasting models to predict seasonal incidence of meningitis in Niger at both the national and district levels. DATA AND METHODS: We used time series of meningitis incidence from 1986 through 2006 for 38 districts in Niger. We tested models based on data that would be rea

Climate change and habitat fragmentation drive the occurrence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, at the northeastern limit of its distribution.

Lyme borreliosis is rapidly emerging in Canada, and climate change is likely a key driver of the northern spread of the disease in North America. We used field and modeling approaches to predict the risk of occurrence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria causing Lyme disease in North America. We combined climatic and landscape variables to model the current and future (2050) potential distribution of the black-legged tick and the white-footed mouse at the northeastern range limit of Lyme disease and estimated a risk index for B. burgdorferi from these distributions. The risk index was mostly

Facilitative N niche complementarity through grass-legume balance in the Anthropocene: A conceptual synthesis.

Grasslands cover nearly 40% of the terrestrial surface and support essential ecosystem services, yet their biodiversity, productivity, and stability are increasingly threatened by climate extremes, land use change, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles in the Anthropocene. Nitrogen (N) limitation is a primary constraint on grassland functioning, and incorporation of N-fixing legumes can alleviate this limitation. However, system outcomes depend less on legume presence alone than on the balance achieved among grass and legume functional groups. Here, we present a conceptual synthesis integrat

Nonlinear maize yield responses to drought drive escalating regional vulnerabilities under climate change in China.

Drought poses a growing threat to global maize production, with risks projected to intensify under climate change. However, comprehensive, long-term quantification of crop yield responses to drought, particularly their nonlinear across diverse environments, remains limited. Here, we combined generalized additive models and threshold regression to unveil the critical role of Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) in determining maize yields in China from 1981 to 2020. Our results demonstrate that yield responses to VPD are strictly nonlinear, governed by distinct regional thresholds: 0.82 kPa in the Nort

Climatic and Hydrological Changes Drive Contemporary Fire Regime Transitions in the World's Largest Wetland.

Tropical wetlands have historically been resilient to fire, but ongoing climate and hydrological changes are undermining this stability. Here, we provide robust multi-decadal evidence (1985-2024) of structural changes in the contemporary fire regime of the Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, associated with hydroclimatic disruption. We investigated changes in burned area, mean fire size, and fire seasonality using hydrological, climatic, and fuel-condition predictors. To identify the major drivers of fire dynamics, we applied trend analyses and Elastic Net models across multiple temporal an

Modelling Net CO2 Assimilation of Two Sphagnum Species From Temperature and Water Content Response.

Photosynthesis and respiration respond differently to the combined effects of temperature and water status. Quantifying their responses is crucial to predict the carbon balance of Sphagnum peatlands in different scenarios of climate change. A first approach was done for two Sphagnum species inhabiting a boreal peatland in Finland. Gas exchange at different temperatures and moss hydration were measured to model net assimilation using simultaneous measurements of photosynthesis and dark respiration. In addition, measurements of moss surface temperature at different water content were performed i
