Cognitive-behavioral group therapy versus group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder among college students: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: In this randomized controlled trial, cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was compared to group psychotherapy (GPT), a credible, structurally equivalent control condition that included only nonspecific factors of group treatment (such as group dynamics). METHODS: Participants were 45 college students at the University of Colorado with a primary diagnosis of SAD. Each treatment condition comprised eight group sessions lasting 2 hr each. Independent assessors (blind to treatment assignment) assessed participants at baseline and posttreatment wit

[Inpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy of adolescents with anxious-depressed school absenteeism: changes during treatment and stability over time].

90 adolescents with chronic anxious-depressed school absenteeism underwent inpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy. A strong, highly significant decline of school absenteeism, anxiety and depressive symptoms rated by parents and youngsters was found. Reductions remained stable over a two months follow-up period. A cautious interpretation of the results is important because of the lack of a control condition.

Is it Beneficial to Add Pharmacotherapy to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy when Treating Anxiety Disorders? A Meta-Analytic Review.

In order to examine the benefit of adding pharmacotherapy to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety disorders, we searched for studies comparing CBT plus pharmacotherapy and CBT plus pill placebo for adults meeting DSM-III-R or DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder between the 1st available year and July 1, 2008. Of 874 studies that were initially considered, 11 studies were identified, representing 471 patients with post-acute completer data and 236 participants with follow-up completer data. CBT plus pharmacotherapy was generally more effective than CBT plus placebo at p

Transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with eating disorders: a two-site trial with 60-week follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare two cognitive-behavioral treatments for outpatients with eating disorders, one focusing solely on eating disorder features and the other a more complex treatment that also addresses mood intolerance, clinical perfectionism, low self-esteem, or interpersonal difficulties. METHOD: A total of 154 patients who had a DSM-IV eating disorder but were not markedly underweight (body mass index over 17.5), were enrolled in a two-site randomized controlled trial involving 20 weeks of treatment and a 60-week closed period of follow-up. The control condition

Multiple channel exposure therapy: combining cognitive-behavioral therapies for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder with panic attacks.

A large proportion of patients who present for treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience comorbid panic attacks, yet it is unclear to what extent currently available PTSD treatment programs address this problem. Here we describe a newly developed treatment, multiple-channel exposure therapy (M-CET), for comorbid PTSD and panic attacks. The treatment utilizes elements of cognitive processing therapy treatment for PTSD and elements of panic control treatment to target physiological, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Preliminary results suggest that M-CET may provide a promis

Role of exposure with response prevention in cognitive-behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa: three-year follow-up results.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have not reported the longer-term outcome of exposure-based treatments for bulimia nervosa. The current study evaluated the 3-year outcome of a randomized clinical trial that compared the additive efficacy of exposure-based versus nonexposure-based behavioral treatments (BT) with a core of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT). METHODS: One hundred thirteen women participated in the original treatment trial and attended a 3-year follow-up assessment. Eating disorder diagnoses and primary, secondary, and tertiary outcome measures were assessed. The impact of treatment c

Common changes in cerebral blood flow in patients with social phobia treated with citalopram or cognitive-behavioral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Neurofunctional changes underlying effective antianxiety treatments are incompletely characterized. This study explored the effects of citalopram and cognitive-behavioral therapy on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in social phobia. METHODS: By means of positron emission tomography with oxygen 15-labeled water, rCBF was assessed in 18 previously untreated patients with social phobia during an anxiogenic public speaking task. Patients were matched for sex, age, and phobia severity, based on social anxiety questionnaire data, and randomized to citalopram medication, cognitive-beh

Long-term effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and residual symptoms after cognitive behavioral therapy: Twelve-month follow-up of a randomized controlled trial.

We examined the long-term efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) compared to a psychoeducation group as an active control condition in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with residual symptoms of OCD after cognitive behavioral therapy. A total of 125 patients were included in a bicentric, interviewer-blind, randomized, and actively controlled trial and were assigned to either an MBCT group (n = 61) or a psychoeducation group (n = 64). Patients' demographic characteristics and the results from our previous assessments have already been reported (Külz et al., 2019)…

Rehabilitative efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy-based intervention for chronic fatigue syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been used for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), but previous studies have shown inconsistencies and divergent long-term outcomes. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of CBT in improving fatigue, physical functioning, and psychological health in patients with CFS. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from their inception to March 2025. Studies designed as randomized controlled trials, enrolling patients diagnosed with CFS who received CBT as a treatment intervention delivered face-to-face, in grou…

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Pain Chronification: Neuroimmune Rationale, Evidence Boundaries, and Trial Design Priorities: A Structured Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Pain chronification is a dynamic transition in which persistent pain may be shaped by interacting nociceptive, peripheral, spinal, supraspinal, neuroimmune, endocrine and cognitive-affective processes. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has clinical value in chronic pain, but claims about glial modulation and disease modification require careful qualification. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate CBT as an early, mechanism-informed and hypothesis-generating intervention while distinguishing clinical efficacy, neuroimmune plausibility, prevention hypotheses and disease-modifying claims. METHODS…

Effects of digital cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia in heavy drinkers with insomnia: A replication and extension study.

Poor sleep and problematic drinking share a bidirectional relationship. Recent studies have targeted sleep as a novel means of improving drinking outcomes, including a prior pilot trial by our group which showed that a digital insomnia intervention (Sleep Healthy Using the Internet [SHUTi]) significantly improved sleep and drinking outcomes to a greater degree than a patient education (PE) program. In the present study, we aimed to replicate and extend our prior findings by assessing diary-derived measures of sleep and alcohol use as well as mental health outcomes in a larger sample. One hundr

Psilocybin Treatment as an Adjunct to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders: Therapeutic Rationale & Considerations for Protocol Development.

Eating disorders (EDs) remain challenging to treat, with high dropout and low remission rates in cognitive-behavioral therapy for EDs (CBT-ED). Psilocybin treatment (PT) demonstrates therapeutic potential to enhance CBT-ED by exerting several neurobiological, psychological, and experiential effects (e.g., antidepressant, neuroplasticity, emotional openness) that are hypothesized to increase psychotherapeutic engagement, reduce dropout, and improve clinical outcomes. This narrative review provides the first consolidation of theoretical evidence for PT/CBT-ED, proposes considerations for a concu

Avoidant Personality Traits and Avoidant Coping in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy vs. Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Adult Depression.

Research on the significance of comorbid personality disorders (PD) on the outcome of depression treatment has shown inconsistent findings. In addition, it is still unclear whether treatment choice based on personality traits and coping can enhance the efficacy of depression treatment. Aiming to deliver clinically representative results, we use dimensional measures to examine avoidant personality and coping as moderators for the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) versus short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) for depression. Furthermore, we explored whether these depression t

Efficacy of fully automated digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Fully automated digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) is increasingly used as a scalable intervention for adults with insomnia. Although recent reviews have supported its overall efficacy, uncertainty remains regarding the interpretation of platform-related differences across trials. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of fully automated dCBT-I in adults and to explore whether apparent differences by delivery platform may be related to study-level characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of randomized controlled …
