Case Report: Concurrent Resistance and Aerobic Training Regulate Adiponectin Expression and Disease Severity in Multiple Sclerosis: A Case Study.

Adapted exercise is an effective non-pharmacological tool to improve functional, cognitive, and psychological parameters in multiple sclerosis (MS), in association with increased quality of life (QoL) and decreased disease severity. Adipose tissue, through the production of different adipokines, is involved in regulating energy metabolism and inflammation. Adiponectin, increased in MS, circulates as oligomers of low (LMW), medium (MMW), and high molecular weight (HMW), the latter mediating the main biological effects. The aim of study was to evaluate the effects of 4 months training at moderat

Mean arterial pressure change associated with cerebral blood flow in healthy older adults.

We investigate over a 12-year period the association between regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cardiovascular risk factors in a prospective cohort of healthy older adults (81.96 ± 3.82 year-old) from the Cognitive REServe and Clinical ENDOphenotype (CRESCENDO) study. Cardiovascular risk factors were measured over 12 years, and gray matter CBF was measured at the end of the study from high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging using arterial spin labeling. The association between cardiovascular risk factors, their long-term change, and CBF was assessed using multivariate linear regression …

[Non pharmacotherapeutic correction of cerebral disturbances in children with diabetes mellitus type I].

A study of psychoemotional, autonomous and cognitive parameters revealed disturbances of the functional state of the central and autonomous nervous system in 75% of children with diabetes mellitus type I. The application of transcranial methods (transcranial electrostimulation (TES) and transcranial magnetic therapy (TcMT) demonstrated the high effectiveness in relation to the cerebral disturbances. The significant improvement was noted in 71.7% of children. The best clinical effect was achieved for the combination of TES and TcMT with primary effect of TcMT on the autonomous status and TES--o

Sickle cell disease: the neurological complications.

The genetic cause of sickle cell disease has been known for decades, yet the reasons for its clinical variability are not fully understood. The neurological complications result from one point mutation that causes vasculopathy of both large and small vessels. Anemia and the resultant cerebral hyperemia produce conditions of hemodynamic insufficiency. Sickled cells adhere to the endothelium, contributing to a cascade of activated inflammatory cells and clotting factors, which result in a nidus for thrombus formation. Because the cerebrovascular reserve becomes exhausted, the capacity for compen

The moderating effects of perceived emotional benefits on inhalant initiation among American Indian and white youth.

BACKGROUND: Inhalant use co-occurs with emotional distress. Inhalant use may be a means of self-medicating distress, but more recent study focuses on the cognitive appraisal of personal benefits of using substances. OBJECTIVES: Objectives were to determine whether emotional distress variables predict early versus later initiation of inhalant use, whether such relationships differ between American Indian and white youth, and whether perceived emotional benefits of inhalant use moderates the relationship between emotional distress and stage of inhalant initiation. METHODS: Data were from a stu

Integrating and synthesizing adversity and resilience knowledge and action: The ICARE model.

This article proposes a model for understanding the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as dynamic and interrelated biobehavioral adaptations to early life stress that have predictable consequences on development and health. Drawing upon research from multiple theoretical and methodological approaches, the intergenerational and cumulative adverse and resilient experiences (ICARE) model posits that the negative consequences of ACEs result from biological and behavioral adaptations to adversity that alter cognitive, social, and emotional development. These adaptations often have nega

Caregiver burden, not patient cognitive impairment, predicts adherence to donepezil transdermal patch in Alzheimer's disease: A retrospective real-world study.

BACKGROUND: The donepezil transdermal patch is a useful option for Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with poor oral adherence. However, treatment discontinuation due to skin irritation or management difficulties remains a clinical challenge. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictive factors for the successful continuation of the donepezil transdermal patch in a real-world setting. METHODS: A retrospective review included 26 AD patients newly prescribed or switched to the donepezil patch at a dementia center. Patients were divided into continuation (n = 15) and discontinuation (n = 11) groups based o

Attentional effects on affect and prefrontal activation during high-intensity exercise with music.

Music is widely used in exercise as a dissociative strategy to divert attention from sensations of fatigue. During high-intensity exercise, however, physiological perceptions may dominate attention, making it difficult for external stimuli like music to capture focus. Two experiments examined the impact of directing attention to music or body movements while running with asynchronous music. In Experiment 1, a within-subjects 2 (intensity: 70% or 80% heart rate reserve) x 2 (focus: music-focus or body-focus) design was employed. Focusing on music resulted in higher affective valence and remembe

Prevalence and modifiable risk factors for dementia in persons with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disability (ID) without Down syndrome (DS) are presumed to be at higher risk of developing dementia due to their lower baseline cognitive reserve. We aimed to determine the prevalence of dementia in people with ID without DS and to identify risk factors of dementia. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey and multicenter study in Japan. Adults with ID without DS residing in the facilities were included. Caregivers of all participants were interviewed by medical specialists, and participants suspected of having cognitive decline were examined directly. I…

Cortical selective neuronal loss, impaired behavior, and normal magnetic resonance imaging in a new rat model of true transient ischemic attacks.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: New-definition transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) are frequent but difficult to diagnose because magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-negative by definition. However, hidden underlying cell damage might be present and account for the reported long-lasting cognitive impairment after TIAs. Most prior rodent models of true TIA targeted the striatum or have not been fully characterized. Here we present the MRI, behavioral, and quantitative cell changes characterizing a new rodent model of true TIA targeting the more behaviorally relevant cerebral cortex. METHODS: Fifteen-minute

The Gray Zone of Consciousness: Cognitive Motor Dissociation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Covert consciousness, including cognitive motor dissociation (CMD), occurs in clinically unresponsive patients with brain injury who can willfully modulate their brain activity to comply with motor imagery commands as revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging, EEG or other technologies. In 2024, the Curing Coma Campaign conducted a gap analysis of the field of covert consciousness and CMD. This article discusses the achievements that have been made in the field since then. RECENT FINDINGS: Three major recent achievements include epidemiological data that CMD occurs
