Chronic hepatitis E virus infection and subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis due to Medicopsis romeroi are rare infections in immunocompromised patients. We present the unusual case of a Canadian renal transplant recipient who was treated for chronic hepatitis E and M. romeroi coinfection with complete recovery. We highlight the diagnostic and treatment challenges encountered over the course of managing these atypical infections in our high-resource but low-endemicity setting.

Scrub typhus, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi(O. tsutsugamushi), is an acute febrile illness. While neurological complications are known, hearing loss is an uncommon manifestation, and coinfection with Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) presents unique diagnostic and pathophysiological challenges. A 58-year-old woman presented with a 5-day history of high fever, severe headache, and constitutional symptoms. She reported transient, fluctuating bilateral hearing loss. Examination revealed characteristic eschars on her legs. Laboratory findings indicated hepatic impairm…

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has resulted in millions of infections and deaths. Studies describing the pathophysiology and characterizing the outcome of the disease in specific populations, including those living with HIV, are necessary. There is no consensus on whether the disease worsens in immunosuppressed patients, which is considered a risk factor, or if immunosuppression might confer protection against cytokine storms. This retrospective descriptive study reports on the profile of SARS-CoV-2/HIV-1 coinfection in individuals seeking care at the Miguel Riet Correa Jr. Unive…

This retrospective study investigated coinfection with Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Mycoplasma hominis (MH) among patients with Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) in southern China to support clinical diagnosis and treatment. A total of 1,138 specimens from patients with gonorrhea were tested for UU, CT, MH, and other pathogens using culture methods, electrochemiluminescence, and fluorescence quantitative PCR. Among the 1,138 patients with NG, 526 (46.2%) were coinfected with at least one additional pathogen. The most frequent coinfection patterns involving UU, CT, or M…

BACKGROUND: Bacterial coinfections in COVID-19 patients present significant clinical challenges, particularly in severe cases. Previous studies have highlighted the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating immune responses, with miR-146a-5p and miR-21-5p implicated in inflammation and immune modulation. This study examines the effect of bacterial coinfections on the expression levels of these miRNAs in patients with severe COVID-19.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study involving Mexican mestizo patients ≥18 years hospitalized with severe COVID-19, confirmed via PCR testing. Patients were cate…

BACKGROUND: Intracranial infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes is extremely rare in adults. We report a case of Streptococcus pyogenes … lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. The tNGS result of CSF indicated Streptococcus pyogenes and EBV coinfection, meanwhile, dPCR of peripheral blood suggested the presence of Streptococcus species. The patient was therefore diagnosed with intracranial infection, sepsis, and septic shock. The antimicrobial therapy was promptly adjusted to include combined anti …

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide among infectious agents, and HIV increases the risk of developing into active disease. HIV-TB coinfection impairs immune responses, while chronic inflammation and infection-associated stress activate neuroendocrine pathways that deeply impact immune homeostasis. Adrenal steroids such as cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its metabolites, along with metabolic hormones like leptin and adiponectin, have emerged as critical regulators of immune function, although their role in TB pathogenesis, particularly in co-…

Knowledge gaps exist on whether SARS-CoV-2 co-infection alters recombination frequency or induces phylogenetic incongruities in endemic β-coronaviruses (HCoV-OC43, HCoV-HKU1), limiting our understanding of cross-species evolution. Among 7213 COVID-19 and 1590 non-COVID-19 acute respiratory cases (2021-2022) screened via multiplex PCR, β-coronavirus co-infections (SARS-CoV-2 + HCoV-OC43/HKU1) and single HCoV-OC43/HKU1 infections were identified. Whole-genome sequencing (Illumina NovaSeq) was performed. Phylogenies were reconstructed using Bayesian inference (MrBayes). Recombination was assessed

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive inflammatory lung disease and the third leading cause of death globally. Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and Moraxella catarrhalis (Mcat) are common pathogens in individuals with COPD. Acquisition of NTHi or Mcat can cause acute exacerbations of COPD. NTHi and/or Mcat also persist for months in the lower airways and lead to chronic inflammation. We hypothesized that infection by NTHi or Mcat, singly or during coinfection, requires regulation of specific bacterial and host cell pathways. We investigated this phenomenon usin…

The Egyptian rousette bat (ERB) is a natural reservoir for Marburg virus (MARV; family Filoviridae), a putative reservoir for Sosuga virus (SOSV; family Paramyxoviridae), and a vertebrate reservoir for Kasokero virus (KASV; family Orthonairoviridae); however, the effect of naturally occurring coinfection by those viruses on MARV shedding and spillover potential is unknown. To answer this question, we experimentally infected one cohort of captive-bred ERBs with SOSV+MARV (n=12 bats) or MARV only (n=12 bats) and a second cohort with KASV+MARV (n=12 bats) or MARV only (n=12 bats), and then collec…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: People with HIV and HBV coinfection have increased risk of developing liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared to either infection alone. We review current and emerging tools for HCC diagnosis and prediction in the context of HIV-HBV coinfection.
RECENT FINDINGS: Treatment with antiviral therapy and the goal of full viral suppression of both HBV and HIV remains foundational to care for people with HIV-HBV coinfection. All patients with chronic HBV and elevated risk, including cirrhosis or HIV infection, should undergo HCC screening. Tools exist to risk str…

Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are two retroviruses that pose a certain threat to human psychology and physiology. In this paper, we propose a diffusive HTLV and HIV coinfection model with macrophages, two delays, cell-to-cell transmission and three latently infected cells in which latent HIV infected CD4+T cells, latent HIV infected macrophages, and latent HTLV infected CD4+T cells are considered. Four reproduction number and four equilibria, namely, infection-free equilibrium, HIV infection equilibrium, HTLV infection equilibrium and HTLV and HIV coi…

INTRODUCTION: Coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum represents a unique challenge in management, with increased risk of neurological complications. Haiti is well-known for being disproportionately impacted by the HIV epidemic, with rates of infection ~6 times higher than in the United States (US). Rates of coinfection in Haiti are incompletely characterized but likely high. The US has seen a marked increase in migration from Haiti, with implications for public health and migrant health management.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old male, recent Haitian migrant pre…

BACKGROUND: Influenza viruses and seasonal coronaviruses are pathogens transmitted via an airborne route that can cause respiratory diseases in humans that have similar symptoms such as fever, cough, and pneumonia. These two viruses can infect similar human tissues, such as the respiratory tract and nasal, bronchial, and alveolar epithelial cells. Influenza virus and seasonal coronavirus coinfections are poorly understood.
METHODS: Here, we coinfected normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells with influenza A/California/04/09 (IAV) or B/Victoria/504/2000 (IBV) strains and the seasonal hu…

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the most common infections in the general population and are mainly caused by respiratory viruses. Detecting several viruses in a respiratory sample is common. To better understand these viral codetections and potential interferences, we tested for the presence of viruses and developed quantitative PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) for the viruses most prevalent in coinfections: human rhinovirus (HRV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and quantified their viral loads according to coinfections and health status, age, cellular abundance and…

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: The immunomodulatory effect of CMV makes coinfection with other microbes, like VZV possible and potentially deadlier in the post kidney transplant period. Treatment should be started promptly. Both infections can be treated with Valganciclovir.
ABSTRACT: Infections are common complications in kidney transplant recipients owing to the lifelong immunosuppression. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) infections are quite common in the posttransplant period. Coinfection with both however has been reported only once. The immunomodulatory effect of CMV makes …

This study examined the scientific literature, by means of a systematic review with meta-synthesis (PROSPERO No. CRD42023410141), to discover the experiences of people undergoing treatment for tuberculosis-HIV coinfection. Ten databases and reference lists were searched for original articles with qualitative data, published in Portuguese, English and/or Spanish up to 2022. The 11 studies included yielded a meta-theme comprising four themes: (i) tuberculosis-HIV coinfection diagnosis and treatment have impact on the life of the affected person; (ii) personal, social and economic vulnerabilities…
