A systematic review of population-based studies on metachronous metastases of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of metachronous metastases (MM) of colorectal (CRC), colon (CC), and rectal (RC) cancer of population-based studies has not been compiled in a systematic review previously. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for primary studies of any design from inception until January 2021 and updated in August 2023 (CRD42021261648). The PRISMA guidelines were adopted, and the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale used for risk of bias assessment. Outcomes on overall and organ-specific MM were extracted. A narrative analysis followed. RESULTS: Out of

Expression Pattern of DAB Adaptor Protein 2 in Left- and Right-Side Colorectal Carcinoma.

Left-sided and right-sided colorectal cancer (L-CRC and R-CRC) have relatively different clinical pictures and pathophysiological backgrounds. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of DAB adapter protein 2 (DAB2) as a potential molecular mechanism that contributes to this diversity in terms of malignancy and responses to therapy. The expression of the suppressor gene DAB2 in colon cancer has already been analyzed, but its significance has not been fully elucidated. Archived samples from 34 patients who underwent colon cancer surgery were included in this study, with 13 patients

Multidisciplinary management of metastatic colorectal cancer.

When colorectal cancer metastasizes to distant organs, usually multiple sites are involved and treatment consists primarily of systemic chemotherapy and supportive care. Chemotherapeutic agents effective against metastatic colorectal cancer include 5-fluorouracil, often used in combination with leucovorin or methotrexate, and irinotecan (CPT-11). Median survival with optimal chemotherapy regimens ranges from 10 to 15 months. Less frequently, colorectal cancer metastasizes only to the liver or lung. In a minority of these cases, surgical resection can be performed and results in a median surviv

Posttransplant Malignant Neoplasms in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients.

IMPORTANCE: As long-term survival after solid organ transplant has improved, malignant neoplasms have emerged as a major determinant of outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether posttransplant cancer risk follows uniform trajectories over time or exhibits patterns across organ types and malignant neoplasm subtypes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used US nationwide data from 2000 to 2023 from the United Network for Organ Sharing registry. Participants were first-time recipients of heart, lung, liver, or kidney transplant. Analyses were conducted from Marc

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma presenting as Horner's syndrome in a patient diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Horner's syndrome has a variety of etiologies ranging from benign to serious life-threatening conditions and has been infrequently reported as a presenting symptom of patients with lymphoid neoplasms. Only one case of Burkitt's lymphoma presenting with toothache, paresthesia, and Horner's syndrome has been described and no case reports of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma as the etiology of Horner's syndrome currently exist in the literature. In addition, lymphoid neoplasms have rarely been reported to occur in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 despite an increased risk of many

Low blood orexin concentration as a predictor of increased nutritional risk and all-cause mortality after surgery for colorectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Orexin regulates food intake, as well as the development and progression of neoplasms. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine associations between nutritional risk and status and neoplasm stage and prognosis in patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 84 consecutive patients undergoing surgery for CRC, serum orexin, nutritional risk and body composition (assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis and cross-sectional area determined using abdominal CT) were evaluated before the operation and 3 months after the surgery. The long-

Endobronchial metastasis secondary to occulting renal cell carcinoma: literature review and a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial Metastasis from extrathoracic tumors is a rare neoplasm that accounts for approximately 1.1% of total endobronchial malignancies. The most common primary tumors associated with EBM are from the colorectal, breast, and kidney regions. Although it represents a late manifestation in the context of tumor progression, it can rarely antedate the diagnosis of the primary tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-years-old male was referred from another city hospital to our thoracic surgery department due to a 4-months history of hemoptysis and productive cough. A chest X-ray and compu

What you see might not be what you get: Discrepancies between intraoperative findings and preoperative diagnosis of ovarian tumors. Appendicular mucocele presenting as an adnexal mass - Case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Adnexal masses include those affecting the ovary or fallopian tubes. We report a unique case with discrepancy between the pre-operative diagnosis (adnexal mass) and the post-operative definitive findings (appendicular tumor invading ovary). We also employ a literature review to provide four scenarios of uncertainty that are encountered between appendiceal and adnexal masses. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 58 year old female with history of treated left colon cancer, referred to the gynecology clinic with intermittent vaginal bleeding for 5 days. Examination showed lower abdominal midli

Streptococcus bovis septic arthritis and osteomyelitis: A report of 21 cases and a literature review.

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus bovis group (SBG) is a well-known cause of endocarditis, but its role in osteoarticular infections (OAIs) has not been well described. METHODS: We analyzed all patients with OAIs by SBG diagnosed in our hospital (1988-2014). We selected those cases with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, as defined according to clinical, microbiological, and imaging studies. Identification of the strains was performed by using the API 20 Strep and the GP card of the Vitek 2 system, and confirmed the identification by molecular methods. In addition, we reviewed the literature to

[Colorectal cancer recurrence].

This review investigates how recurrent colorectal cancer (CRC) affects ~16% of patients within 5 years after curative surgery and is linked to high mortality. Early dissemination and tumor dormancy challenge detection. Most recurrences occur in the liver, lungs, or peritoneum. Follow-up aims to detect early, but the survival benefits are uncertain. Around half of patients with recurrence may receive curative treatment, often involving surgery or chemotherapy. More research is needed to improve outcomes.

Rare extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the vulva: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that originate outside the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and share histologic and immunohistochemical features with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Occurrence in the vulva is exceptionally uncommon, with limited reports describing their clinical course and management. Recognition is critical due to potential for local recurrence and malignant behavior. METHODS: We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast who developed a recurrent vulvar mas

Intracorporeal Versus Extracorporeal Anastomosis in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy: A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial (The IVEA-study).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate short-term outcomes of performing intracorporeal versus extracorporeal anastomosis in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for right colon neoplasm. BACKGROUND: Despite advances in the laparoscopic approach in colorectal surgery and the clear benefit of this approach over open surgery, because of the technical difficulty in performing intracorporeal anastomosis (IA), some continue to perform it extracorporeally in right colon surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a prospective multicenter randomized trial with 2 parallel groups on which e

NOUS-209 Off-the-shelf Immunotherapy Has the Potential to Hit Primary and Metachronous Colorectal and Urothelial Cancers in Lynch Syndrome.

Lynch syndrome is characterized by the development of microsatellite-instable cancers that share neoantigens, offering an opportunity for targeted immunotherapy. NOUS-209 is a heterologous prime-boost cancer vaccine in clinical development, employing viral vectors encoding 209 shared neoantigen peptides derived from frameshift mutations (FSM) commonly found in microsatellite-instable tumors. In this study, we investigated the presence and dynamics of NOUS-209 targeted FSMs in both primary and metachronous Lynch syndrome-associated cancers. Whole-exome sequencing was performed for 73 tumors, in

Mortality after colorectal cancer among survivors of childhood cancer.

Mortality after diagnosis of colorectal subsequent malignant neoplasms (CRC-SMN) among childhood cancer survivors is understudied. Using data from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program, we compared all-cause mortality of survivors with CRC-SMN with survivors without CRC-SMN and CRC patients in the general population without a childhood cancer history. Among 25 656 childhood cancer survivors, 96 developed CRC-SMN, with 50% diagnosed before age 40 years and 19% before age 30 years. Of those diagnosed before age 40 years, 35%

IPMN beyond the cyst: toward a broader framework of pancreatic and systemic cancer susceptibility.

INTRODUCTION: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are established precursor lesions of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Although current guidelines primarily focus on lesion morphology, emerging evidence suggests that IPMN may also be associated with broader pancreatic and extrapancreatic cancer risk. AREAS COVERED: This review examines pancreatic field cancerization, including concomitant and metachronous PDACs that may arise independently of the index IPMN. We evaluate reported associations between IPMN and extrapancreatic malignancies, including colorectal, gastric, an

[Severe Hyponatremia as a Marker of Malignancy in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis. Clinical Implications and Prognostic Relevance in Two Cases].

Severe hyponatremia is a common complication (21.6%) in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. It can sometimes manifest as a paraneoplastic syndrome, which may precede the diagnosis of cancer in 5% of cases. It can be associated with lung cancer (25 - 45%), colorectal cancer, breast cancer, or lymphomas. Hyponatremia reflects the complexity of the interactions between liver disease and oncological processes. In decompensated cirrhotic patients, hyponatremia is usually caused by the kidney´s inability to excrete free water, resulting in dilution of blood sodium. However, in the context of canc
