Over nine years period (1354-1362), 1,39,436 children were admitted in Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH), Kabul. Of these 51,212 (46.8%) children were hospitalised with preventable diseases. Seventy four per cent of patients were under five years of age. Among the infectious diseases, gastroenteritis accounted for nearly 70% of admissions. Tuberculosis, measles, diphtheria and typhoid fever were other common infectious diseases. Malnutrition of varying degree was the core problem among the hospitalised children and was seen in nearly two thirds of admissions. Twenty per cent of t

Vaccination of animals may have both positive and negative effects on human health. The negative consequences largely occur with live vaccines. The protection provided by vaccination to animals is taken advantage of for human health in the most diverse ways, both directly and indirectly. Typical examples are vaccination of dogs and cats against against rabies and inoculation against diseases of cattle, horses and dogs in which reoviruses of serotypes 1, 2 and 3 are involved. An important contribution to the protection of human health is also provided by vaccination with inactivated pathogens a

Hypertension (HTN) is a globally prevalent non-communicable disease contributing significantly to cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. In achieving control of HTN, therapeutic adherence plays a crucial role. Studies from India identify varying rates of adherence to antihypertensive medications. Multiple factors determine treatment adherence in HTN. In India, factors such as lower socioeconomic status, health literacy, asymptomatic nature of disease, forgetfulness, cost of medications, and duration of HTN determine the adherence. An excellent physician-patient relationship incorporating

Since the introduction and widespread use of inactivated and oral poliovirus vaccines, there has been a continued and increasing commitment to worldwide poliomyelitis control. The eradication of poliomyelitis in certain countries, smallpox eradication worldwide, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Expanded Programme on Immunization, and advances in poliovirus vaccine production augur well for worldwide elimination within the next few decades. The success of any such program rests firmly upon scientific feasibility, intensive epidemiologic surveillance, and economic justification. The develop

Disease or pathogen risk prioritisations aid understanding of infectious agent impact within surveillance or mitigation and biosecurity work, but take significant development. Previous work has shown the H-(Hirsch-)index as an alternative proxy. We present a weighted risk analysis describing infectious pathogen impact for human health (human pathogens) and well-being (domestic animal pathogens) using an objective, evidence-based, repeatable approach; the H-index. This study established the highest H-index European pathogens. Commonalities amongst pathogens not included in previous surveillance

In the new millennium, the centuries-old strategy of quarantine is becoming a powerful component of the public health response to emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. During the 2003 pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome, the use of quarantine, border controls, contact tracing, and surveillance proved effective in containing the global threat in just over 3 months. For centuries, these practices have been the cornerstone of organized responses to infectious disease outbreaks. However, the use of quarantine and other measures for controlling epidemic diseases has always been con

Vector-borne infections (VBI) are very common around the globe and they account for many devastating diseases. They are not found exclusively in the third world or tropical regions but spread to every corner of the planet. The factors driving these infections are many and interact in very complex ways. This review attempts to put into perspective the external-climate change and demographics, as well as the internal factors that drive these infections with particular attention to the role that verticle transmission (VT) plays in the prevalence and emergence of these infections. VT has been wide

INTRODUCTION: Chronic communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, remain major global health challenges. Effective treatment adherence is crucial for improving patient outcomes and health education plays a key role in enhancing adherence. However, evidence for the most effective educational interventions remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of health education interventions in improving treatment adherence among patients with chronic communicable diseases.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted f

A method is developed for the Bayesian analysis of rate ratios of repeated events in matched cluster-randomized trials, and applied to the Flies and Eyes trial against trachoma in The Gambia. A non-mechanistic analysis estimates the incidence rate ratio for insecticide spray, relative to no intervention, as 0.59 (95 per cent credible interval 0.37--0.92), and for latrine provision as 0.67 (0.41--1.01). The method also yields incidence and clearance rate ratios for age. In the Flies and Eyes trial, the former rates are estimated to decrease with age, although no clear pattern is seen in the lat

BACKGROUND: There has been remarkable progress in the treatment of HIV throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but there are few data on the prevalence and overlap of other significant causes of disease in HIV endemic populations. Our aim was to identify the prevalence and overlap of infectious and non-communicable diseases in such a population in rural South Africa.
METHODS: We did a cross-sectional study of eligible adolescents and adults from the Africa Health Research Institute demographic surveillance area in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The participants, who were 15

Accelerated disease control goals have long been appreciated for their role in galvanizing commitment and bringing a sense of urgency for disease prevention. WHO's Western Pacific Region has 14 on-going communicable disease reduction goals including 1 targeting eradication, 10 targeting elimination, and 3 control initiatives. These goals cover mother-to-child transmission of HIV, congenital syphilis, tuberculosis, leprosy, five parasitic diseases and four vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD). The initiatives have distinct objectives, approaches, and means in which to measure achievement of the g

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the increase in the number of complicated cases in patients who underwent surgery for acute appendicitis during the COVID-19 pandemic and the previous year.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective examination was made of the files of patients who presented at the Emergency Department and were diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent surgery within 24 hours or were followed up between 11 March and 1 June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the same period in the previous year. The patients in the pandemic period were named the pandemic group

This study aims to investigate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the management of rheumatic diseases (RD). An online survey included 10 questions were designed to assess potential differences in rheumatology practice. The survey was conducted between March 2021 and June 2021. Marginal homogeneity test was used to compare frequencies of outpatient clinic patients between the pre-pandemic and pandemic. Other results were analyzed by descriptive statistics. One hundred three clinicians (75.7% in rheumatology practice for at least five years) responded to the surve

The second World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day was celebrated on 30 January 2021. To mark the occasion, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched its roadmap for NTDs for the period 2021 to 2030, which is aimed at increasing prevention and control of these too-long neglected diseases. Described here is a global overview on past achievements, current challenges, and future prospects for the WHO NTDs roadmap 2021-2030.

INTRODUCTION: Since the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) began, necessary measures to prevent virus transmission and reduce mortality have been implemented, including mandatory public use of masks, regular hand-sanitizing and hand-washing, social distancing, avoidance of crowds, remote work, and cancellation of public events. During and after the introduction of COVID-19 lockout, we performed a systematic review of available published literature to investigate the incidence of seasonal influenza and other respiratory viral infections.
