Drawing toward empathy-Physician communication.

A message in an app from her doctor following a routine colon cancer screening inspired the author to conceive of the drawing "physician communication." The author created the drawing so she could digest the words the doctor said-cellular, polyp, early-stage. As the author thought about their medical visit more, it struck her how big the issue of physician communication is, and how it has been an enormous challenge in my life. So many words are shared, and so much meaning is lost in translation. For the author, the drawing captures the essence of her medical visit because it represents the phy

Distinguishable spreading dynamics in microbial communities.

A packed community of exponentially proliferating microbes will spread in size exponentially. However, due to nutrient depletion, mechanical constraints, or other limitations, exponential proliferation is not indefinite, and the spreading slows. Here, we theoretically explore a fundamental question: is it possible to infer the dominant limitation type from the spreading dynamics? Using a continuum active fluid model, we consider three limitations to cell proliferation: intrinsic growth arrest (e.g., due to sporulation), pressure from other cells, and nutrient access. We find that memoryless gr

Engendering trustworthiness in the community: Strategies for researchers.

BackgroundDespite significant advances in Alzheimer's disease treatment, underrepresentation of ethnoracialized groups in clinical trials limit the generalizability of study findings. Though mistrust in health care research is a known barrier to clinical trial participation, methods are needed to quantitate this multidimensional subjective term. This study investigated how Black participants view trustworthiness.ObjectiveTo provide an overview of participants' views of a trustworthy study design and investigator.MethodsThis qualitative study utilized focus group discussions with Black particip

Sharing in the community of having lost a child.

What does it mean to share an experience of losing a child? Not solely to put such an experience into words, but also to speak of it to others who may share their own experiences of loss? What is shared in such moments of sharing? Here, we present a phenomenological study of sharing among parents who have lost a child. We draw on observations and anecdotes from a parental bereavement group. Our thoughts are organised around thematic statements that reflect the value of these sharing spaces for bereaved parents: sharing as an experience of sharing something, sharing as an experience of a commun

Recognizing Communication as a Procedural Skill in Neonatology.

Many of the ethical challenges that arise in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stem from communication difficulties between families and clinicians. Parents in the NICU face tremendous stress, including separation from their infants, uncertainty about clinical outcomes, and fear for the future; they require clear and compassionate communication from clinicians to build trust and engage in shared decision-making. In this review, we explore how trauma that parents experience in the NICU shapes their communication needs, examine the role of communication in providing trauma-informed care, d

Applying Principles of Community-Engaged Research.

Community-engaged research (CEnR) is a participatory approach that foregrounds community priorities and applies research results to community action. CEnR embodies shared decision-making by including community partners' values, preferences, and experiences within the research process. CEnR projects can help medical student learners acquire skills in conducting needs assessments and more fully appreciate the social determinants of health and challenges faced by communities. CEnR does not prescribe specific methods for addressing research questions. Rather, it is a collaborative approach with co

Assessment and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in the Community.

Bipolar disorder is a recurrent, heterogeneous condition that often begins in adolescence and typically requires lifelong, multimodal management. Advances in evidence-based assessment (EBA) offer structured frameworks for prediction, prescription, and progress monitoring, and pharmacological and psychosocial interventions supported by recent reviews and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT)/International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) guidelines provide effective options across phases of illness. Despite these advances, the impact of evidence-based approaches rema
