Indigenous Cancer Survivors in Peer Education and Community Knowledge Exchange: A Scoping Review.

Indigenous people affected by cancer often encounter services that do not reflect their languages, relationships, knowledge systems, or community priorities. Survivor narratives are used in cancer education, yet the educational work undertaken by survivors has not been mapped. This scoping review examined the roles, formats, reported outcomes, and conditions shaping implementation when Indigenous cancer survivors participated in peer education and community knowledge exchange. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and the reporting guideline for scoping reviews, six databases were searche

Applying adult learning theory to goals of care training for physical medicine and rehabilitation residents.

By the end of residency, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residents are expected to align patient values with treatments using goals of care (GOC) discussions. Like other procedural skills, GOC communication skills are best learned through simulation training and deliberate practice and feedback rather than lectures. However, educational resources to effectively impart these skills are often lacking. How can educators design effective GOC communication curricula with limited time and resources? This article presents two teaching techniques grounded in adult learning theory that educ

Partnering with young people to address the mental health crisis: From research to action.

Young people face a growing mental health crisis complicated by limited access to care. Youth-led participatory action research has the potential to improve youth mental health outcomes by engaging young people in developing sustainable solutions. Current youth-led participatory action research frameworks require ongoing youth engagement that can exclude marginalized young people. To address this gap, Born This Way Foundation and Hopelab implemented a multiphase, cluster-based approach to youth-engaged research offering varied opportunities for engagement of marginalized youth across three pha

Evidence-to-Recommendation Framework for 2026 ACE Clinical Guideline on the management of knee osteoarthritis - a joint effort with patients.

This Evidence-to-Recommendation (EtR) framework underpins the ACE Clinical Guideline (ACG) for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA), providing rationale and justifications for its recommendations. Knee OA is a prevalent and debilitating condition in Singapore, with significant disease burden and impacts on healthcare utilisation costs. The ACG addresses management gaps that contribute to suboptimal clinical outcomes, including insufficient uptake of conservative management, limited knowledge of community exercise and physiotherapist resources, and inappropriate use of complementary and a

The effect and mechanism of mutual aid on the subjective well-being of participants under the COVID-19 pandemic.

The outbreak of COVID-19 led to the emergence of various forms of mutual aid. While prior research has demonstrated that mutual aid can contribute to participants' subjective well-being, the majority of these studies are qualitative and lack clear understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Using a questionnaire survey and structural equation modeling, this study finds that mutual aid significantly enhances the subjective well-being of participants in China. Bootstrap chained mediation analysis shows that this is mainly because mutual aid not only provides material resources to participants bu

Ethical analysis of community-based dementia screening for unhoused older adults.

Screening for dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in community-based settings helps connect vulnerable older adults to medical and social support services promoting well-being. Referencing a universal screening program for unhoused older adults seeking emergency shelter services as a case example, this paper calls attention to alignment of programmatic features with the four principles of biomedical ethics, beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice. Regarding beneficence, homeless services workers gain insight into clients' needs and can facilitate engagement with resources t

Perinatal health framework for people with intellectual disability.

We propose a framework for guiding research on perinatal health in people with intellectual disability (ID). We developed this framework based on the perinatal health framework for people with physical disabilities, American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities conceptual framework of human functioning, disability reproductive justice framework, trauma-informed care, and socio-ecological model. The framework reflects health outcomes of birthing people with ID and their infants that result from interactions of factors across the life course at policy (health, social, and d

COVID-19 response in northwest Syria: innovation and community engagement in a complex conflict.

Despite lacking capacity and resources, the health system in the northwest Syria is using innovative approaches for the containment of COVID-19. Lessons drawn from previous outbreaks in the region, such as the polio outbreak in 2013 and the annual seasonal influenza, have enabled the Early Warning and Response Network, a surveillance system to develop mechanisms of predicting risk and strengthening surveillance for the new pandemic. Social media tools such as WhatsApp are effectively collecting health information and communicating health messaging about COVID-19. Community engagement has also

Prehospital low-titer cold-stored whole blood: Philosophy for ubiquitous utilization of O-positive product for emergency use in hemorrhage due to injury.

The mortality from hemorrhage in trauma patients remains high. Early balanced resuscitation improves survival. These truths, balanced with the availability of local resources and our goals for positive regional impact, were the foundation for the development of our prehospital whole blood initiative-using low-titer cold-stored O RhD-positive whole blood. The main concern with use of RhD-positive blood is the potential development of isoimmunization in RhD-negative patients. We used our retrospective massive transfusion protocol (MTP) data to analyze the anticipated risk of this change in pract

A survey of antimicrobial resistance in a tertiary referral hospital in the United Arab Emirates.

Published data on antimicrobial resistance are lacking for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Knowledge of local patterns of resistance is essential to optimize guidelines for empirical antimicrobial treatment. Awareness of susceptibility patterns in other parts of the world may be important for determining empirical antimicrobial therapy for travelers or patients transferred from abroad. Antibiograms from unique isolates of common hospital and community bacteria are described in a tertiary referral hospital in the UAE, which had no antimicrobial restrictions and limited resources.
