INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is a global zoonotic disease and major public and animal health problem in many parts of the world, particularly in places where livestock is a major source of food and income. This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2012 and May 2013 to determine the seroprevalence and assess potential risk factors of brucellosis in small ruminants in five export abattoirs at Debre Ziet and Modjo, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia.
METHODOLOGY: Serology and questionnaire were the methods used. In this investigation, 853 sera samples of 485 caprines and 368 ovines bro

BACKGROUND: The internationally mandatory complement fixation test (CFT) for testing of equine sera for the absence of glanders has repeatedly led to discrepant results. Not only do "false positive" sera pose a problem for the diagnostician and the animal health authorities but they can also result in significant financial losses for the animal owners.Due to the very low prevalence of glanders in the horse population it is of major importance to use tests with a high specificity to overcome unreliable predictive values. We have compared formalin-fixed B. mallei whole cell antigen and a well ch

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) is a chronic acquired blistering disease with characteristic clinical, pathologic, and immunopathologic features. The disease is characterized immunopathologically by circulating and tissue-bound IgG class autoantibodies (EBA antibodies) to the basement membrane zone of stratified squamous epithelium. Previous studies have shown that circulating and tissue-bound EBA antibodies are heterogenous in their ability to activate complement and have raised the possibility that functional heterogeneity might be related to IgG subclass restriction. In this study, we

There are four main subclasses of human IgG: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4, among which IgG1-IgG3 activate complement, but IgG4 does not. We studied the IgG subclasses of anti-intercellular (IC) antibodies in pemphigus patients and anti-basement membrane zone (BMZ) antibodies in bullous pemphigoid (BP) patients by immunofluorescent staining using mouse monoclonal antibodies against human IgG1-IgG4. At the same time, the capability of complement fixation of each serum was determined by means of complement immunofluorescence. In both pemphigus and BP autoantibodies, various distributions of IgG sub
