Causal Relationship of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids With Mental Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Mental disorders (MDs) pose a important global health challenge, with a complex pathogenesis complicating treatment development. Nutritional interventions, particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), have gained attention as potential therapeutic options. OBJECTIVE: This Mendelian randomization (MR) meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the potential causal relationship between PUFAs and MDs. DATA SOURCES: Genome-wide association study data were utilized to analyze the association between PUFAs (including omega-3, omega-3 percentage [omega-3%], omega-6, omega-6 percentage [omega-6%]

Transdiagnostic eye-tracking biomarkers of inattention across psychiatric disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Attention impairment is a dimensional and heterogeneous trait, distributed continuously across the population. Understanding the pathophysiology of eye movement control offers valuable insight into attention dysfunctions and their underlying neural circuits. This systematic review aims to map different oculomotor paradigms and metrics to key attention systems across a range of psychiatric conditions, highlighting their potential for identifying biological markers of attention. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using keywords r

Atlas of Gray Matter Volume Differences Across Psychiatric Conditions: A Systematic Review With a Novel Meta-Analysis That Considers Co-Occurring Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Regional gray matter volume (GMV) differences between individuals with mental disorders and comparison participants may be confounded by co-occurring disorders. To disentangle disorder-specific GMV correlates, we conducted a large-scale multidisorder meta-analysis using a novel approach that explicitly models co-occurring disorders. METHODS: We systematically reviewed voxel-based morphometry studies indexed in PubMed and Scopus up to January 2023 that compared adults with major mental disorders (anorexia nervosa, schizophrenia spectrum, anxiety, bipolar, major depressive, obsessiv

Assortative mating and parental genetic relatedness drive the pathogenicity of variably expressive variants.

We examined more than 38,000 spouse pairs from four neurodevelopmental disease cohorts and the UK Biobank to identify phenotypic and genetic patterns in parents associated with neurodevelopmental disease risk in children. We identified correlations between six phenotypes in parents and children, including correlations of clinical diagnoses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (R=0.31-0.49, p<0.001), and two measures of sub-clinical autism features in parents affecting several autism severity measures in children, such as bi-parental mean Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) scores affecting prob

Inferring other people's states of mind: Comparison across social anxiety, body dysmorphic, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are characterized by fears of negative evaluation by others (related to one's own incompetence or flawed appearance, respectively). Previous research has shown that individuals with SAD and BDD exhibit difficulty identifying facial expressions and interpretive biases for threat in social situations. The current study aimed at further investigating social cognition in SAD, BDD, and mentally healthy controls (35 individuals per group, respectively). Further, 35 individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as a c

Sex differences in internalising and externalising symptom patterns, pathway and persistence in adolescents receiving psychiatric care: a 2-year follow-up of the MILESTONE European cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in adolescent mental disorders are well documented, but less is known about how these differences evolve during the transition to adulthood, particularly during the shift from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS), a critical period marked by vulnerability to discontinuity of care. OBJECTIVE: To examine sex-specific differences in psychiatric symptom profiles and clinical trajectories during the CAMHS-AMHS transition using data from the European MILESTONE project, a 2-year longitudinal study. METHODS: A cohort o

The progress in the field of clinical staging for mental disorders within the last decade: an updated systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical staging aims to refine psychiatric diagnosis by describing mental disorders on a continuum of disorder progression, with the pragmatic goal of improved treatment planning and outcome prediction. The first systematic review on this topic, published a decade ago, included 78 papers, and identified separate staging models for schizophrenia, unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, substance use disorder, anorexia, and bulimia nervosa. The current review updates this review by including new proposals for staging models and by systematically reviewing research b

Mind does really matter: evidence from neuroimaging studies of emotional self-regulation, psychotherapy, and placebo effect.

This article reviews neuroimaging studies of conscious and voluntary regulation of various emotional states (sexual arousal, sadness, negative emotion). The results of these studies show that metacognition and cognitive recontextualization selectively alters the way the brain processes and reacts to emotional stimuli. Neuroimaging studies of the effect of psychotherapy in patients suffering from diverse forms of psychopathology (obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, unipolar major depressive disorder, social phobia, spider phobia, borderline personality) are also examined. The results

Reversible and selective inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A in mental and other disorders.

The clinically tested reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A (RIMAs) include brofaromine, moclobemide and toloxatone. Moclobemide has shown unequivocal antidepressant activity against serious depressive illness in 4 placebo-controlled double-blind trials. It has been compared with amitriptyline, imipramine, clomipramine, desipramine, maprotiline, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, tranylcypromine, toloxatone, mianserin and amineptine in the treatment of depressive disorders. Meta-analysis showed convincing evidence of moclobemide efficacy, comparable with the most potent antidepressants available.

The manifestation of anxiety disorders after traumatic brain injury: a review.

The development of anxiety disorders after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a strong predictor of social, personal, and work dysfunction; nevertheless, the emergence of anxiety has been largely unexplored and poorly understood in the context of TBI. This article provides an overview of the limited published research to date on anxiety disorders that are known to develop after TBI, including post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, specific phobia, and social anxiety disorder. This review also examines diagnostic criteria, the

Anxiety and depression in a primary care clinic. Comparison of Diagnostic Interview Schedule, General Health Questionnaire, and practitioner assessments.

Over one half of all persons seen in a primary care clinic were identified as having anxiety or depressive disorder by the primary care provider, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), or the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). In only about 5% of all patients were findings positive on all three assessments concurrently. Both the GHQ and the practitioners identified over 30% of all patients as having a disorder, while about 8% had one or more of five DIS anxiety or depressive disorders (major depression, dysthymia, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorde

The investigation of mechanisms underlying addictive behaviors: a case-control study.

Background: The contradictory nature of behavioral addictions has sustained a nondefinitive debate regarding their construct validity. Objective(s): The current study aims at exploring mechanisms underlying two distinct classes of behaviors-behavioral addictions characterized by core alterations in reward processing systems (ARPS) and behaviors with a main function of maladaptive coping. Methods: This case-control study included 99 treatment-seeking individuals with a primary diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (male: N = 68; female: N = 31) and 74 healthy control (HC) subjects (male: N = 38; fe

Behavioural addictions in bipolar disorder patients: role of impulsivity and personality dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural addictions (BAs) can be understood as disorders characterized by repetitive occurrence of impulsive and uncontrolled behaviours. Very few studies have investigated their association with mood disorders. The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the main behavioural addictions in a sample of bipolar outpatients in euthymic phase or stabilised by medications and to investigate the role of impulsivity and temperamental and character dimensions. METHODS: One-hundred-fifty-eight Bipolar Disorder (BD) (DSM-IV) outpatients were assessed with tests design

Mood-congruent and mood-incongruent psychotic symptoms in major depression: the role of severity and personality.

BACKGROUND: Whether psychotic symptoms in major depression (MD) are better explained by a "severity model" or by a "vulnerability model", with personality as a predisposing factor, is still debated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate in MD the relationship between the content of psychotic features (mood congruent (MC) or mood incongruent (MI)) and severity of depression or personality traits. METHODS: 62 inpatients affected by MD with psychotic features were divided into three groups on the basis of the content of psychotic symptoms: MC, MI, mixed MC-MI. All subjects completed the S

Inpatient Psychiatric Burden in Adolescents With Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with an elevated risk of mood and anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and suicidal ideation, though there remains a lack of data assessing the impact of atopic dermatitis on hospitalization for psychiatric illness among adolescents. We reviewed the 2022 Kids' Inpatient Database for adolescent patients with AD and sought to assess the primary outcome of whether their reason for hospital admission was psychiatric in nature, encompassing suicidal ideation, mood, psychotic, substance use, neurodevelopmental, trauma, personality, obsessi

Severity of acne vulgaris predicts maladaptive psychosocial perceptions and neuropsychiatric disorders: a case-control study.

Acne vulgaris can negatively impact a patient's quality of life. This study evaluated the psychological and interpersonal perceptions of patients who had received acne treatment. Using data from the National Institutes of Health's All of Us Research Program, we analyzed survey responses from 1,843 participants treated with systemic therapies for acne (reflecting more severe disease) and 1,843 matched participants treated with topical therapies alone. Outcomes included surveys assessing both mental and social health and the prevalence of neuropsychiatric conditions between groups. Compared with
