Pre-symptomatic radiological changes in frontotemporal dementia: propagation characteristics, predictive value and implications for clinical trials.

Computational imaging and quantitative biomarkers offer invaluable insights in the pre-symptomatic phase of neurodegenerative conditions several years before clinical manifestation. In recent years, there has been a focused effort to characterize pre-symptomatic cerebral changes in familial frontotemporal dementias using computational imaging. Accordingly, a systematic literature review was conducted of original articles investigating pre-symptomatic imaging changes in frontotemporal dementia focusing on study design, imaging modalities, data interpretation, control cohorts and key findings. Sex estimation by maxillary sinus using computed tomography: a systematic review.

Sex estimation is an important part of forensic human identification, and when primary methods cannot be applied, forensic anthropology becomes an important auxiliary method of identification. The maxillary sinus may remain intact even if the skull is severely damaged and could thus be used in forensic investigations. The objective of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the evaluation of the maxillary sinus as a technique for sex estimation. Articles published in the past 10 years were searched using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases, including those that used co

Rubber Bullet Induced Traumatic Brain Injury.

Rubber bullets have long been known to cause, on rare occasions, traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, neurosurgical literature on this occurrence is limited, and no focused review of this injury pattern has been conducted. The authors present the case of a 28-year-old male struck by a rubber bullet in the left periorbital region, causing TBI in addition to complete left visual loss and complex facial fractures. After developing a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, the patient was taken to the operating room for combined neurosurgical-craniofacial intervention. Utilizing frameless intraoperative

In silico prototype of a human lung with a single airway to predict particle deposition.

BACKGROUND: Experimental analyses of the flow of drug particles inside the human lung usually require that the patient be exposed to radiation and also of expensive equipment that often lack of enough accuracy. Numerical calculations based on CFD (computational fluid dynamics) have been proven to be a valuable tool to analyze flows in diverse applications. METHODS: The complexity of the human lung disallows running calculations on complete lung models due to the large number of cells that would be required. In this work, using a proprietary methodology, particle deposition in the lung is simu

Antibody-recruiting protein-catalyzed capture agents to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Antibiotic resistant infections are projected to cause over 10 million deaths by 2050, yet the development of new antibiotics has slowed. This points to an urgent need for methodologies for the rapid development of antibiotics against emerging drug resistant pathogens. We report on a generalizable combined computational and synthetic approach, called antibody-recruiting protein-catalyzed capture agents (AR-PCCs), to address this challenge. We applied the combinatorial protein catalyzed capture agent (PCC) technology to identify macrocyclic peptide ligands against highly conserved surface prote

Geometrical features for premature ventricular contraction recognition with analytic hierarchy process based machine learning algorithms selection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Premature ventricular contraction is associated to the risk of coronary heart disease, and its diagnosis depends on a long time heart monitoring. For this purpose, monitoring through Holter devices is often used and computational tools can provide essential assistance to specialists. This paper presents a new premature ventricular contraction recognition method based on a simplified set of features, extracted from geometric figures constructed over QRS complexes (Q, R and S waves). METHODS: Initially, a preprocessing stage based on wavelet denoising electrocardiogram

Proof of Concept Study for the Design, Manufacturing, and Testing of a Patient-Specific Shape Memory Device for Treatment of Unicoronal Craniosynostosis.

Treatment of unicoronal craniosynostosis is a surgically challenging problem, due to the involvement of coronal suture and cranial base, with complex asymmetries of the calvarium and orbit. Several techniques for correction have been described, including surgical bony remodeling, early strip craniotomy with orthotic helmet remodeling and distraction. Current distraction devices provide unidirectional forces and have had very limited success. Nitinol is a shape memory alloy that can be programmed to the shape of a patient-specific anatomy by means of thermal treatment. In this work, a methodolog

Heterochromatin density (condensation) during cell differentiation and maturation using the human granulocytic lineage of chronic myeloid leukaemia as a convenient model.

The present study was undertaken to provide complementary data on the heterochromatin condensation in both central and peripheral nuclear regions during the cell differentiation and maturation using computer-assisted density measurements at the single-cell level. The lineage of neutrophilic granulocytes in the bone marrow of patients suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia was very convenient for such study because the increased number of granulocytes in all developmental stages was satisfactory for heterochromatin density measurements. The morphology of leukaemic and non-leukaemic neutrophil

Contribution of each leg to the control of unperturbed bipedal stance in lower limb amputees: new insights using entropy.

The present study was designed to assess the relative contribution of each leg to unperturbed bipedal posture in lower limb amputees. To achieve this goal, eight unilateral traumatic trans-femoral amputees (TFA) were asked to stand as still as possible on a plantar pressure data acquisition system with their eyes closed. Four dependent variables were computed to describe the subject's postural behavior: (1) body weight distribution, (2) amplitude, (3) velocity and (4) regularity of centre of foot pressure (CoP) trajectories under the amputated (A) leg and the non-amputated (NA) leg.
