Progress of malignant mesothelioma research in basic science: A review of the 14th international conference of the international mesothelioma interest group (iMig2018).

Here we summarize the most recent update of mesothelioma research in basic science presented at the 14th iMig2018 international conference. The symposium of basic science track mainly focused on the drivers of mesothelioma initiation and progression, molecular pathogenesis, and perspectives on potential therapeutic approaches. This review covers several promising fields including strategies efficiently inhibiting YAP/TAZ functions or their critical downstream targets, heparanase inhibitors, RAN depletion, and MIF/CD74 inhibitors that may be developed as novel therapeutic approaches. In additio

Imaging in pleural mesothelioma: A review of the 14th International Conference of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group.

Mesothelioma patients rely on the information their clinical team obtains from medical imaging. Whether x-ray-based computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on local magnetic fields within a patient's tissues, different modalities generate images with uniquely different appearances and information content due to the physical differences of the image-acquisition process. Researchers are developing sophisticated ways to extract a greater amount of the information contained within these images. This paper summarizes the imaging-based research presented orally at the 2018

SJS/TEN 2017: Building Multidisciplinary Networks to Drive Science and Translation.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) is a life-threatening, immunologically mediated, and usually drug-induced disease with a high burden to individuals, their families, and society with an annual incidence of 1 to 5 per 1,000,000. To effect significant reduction in short- and long-term morbidity and mortality, and advance clinical care and research, coordination of multiple medical, surgical, behavioral, and basic scientific disciplines is required. On March 2, 2017, an investigator-driven meeting was held immediately before the American Academy of Dermatology Annual

Proceedings of the 2015 ASPEN Research Workshop-Taste Signaling.

This article summarizes research findings from 6 experts in the field of taste and feeding that were presented at the 2015 American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Research Workshop. The theme was focused on the interaction of taste signals with those of a postingestive origin and how this contributes to regulation of food intake through both physiological and learning processes. Gastric bypass results in exceptional loss of fat mass and increases in circulating levels of key gut peptides, some of which are also expressed along with their cognate receptors in taste buds. Changes i

Do we understand how botulinum toxin works and have we optimized the way it is administered to the bladder? ICI-RS 2014.

AIMS: The use of botulinum toxin A (BoNT/A) is commonplace now in the management of refractory overactive bladder and neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO). Despite one formulation now having a license, the full mechanism of action is not fully understood. Furthermore practice varies worldwide in the way the toxin is delivered to the bladder. At the ICI-RS 2014 Meeting in Bristol, UK a Think Tank session was conducted on the topic of "Do we understand how botulinum toxin works and have we optimized the way it is administered to the bladder?" This manuscript reflects the Think Tank's summary a

Toward a meningitis-free world.

Meningococcal meningitis is a devastating disease that is often fatal. Vaccines against the five major meningococcal serogroups causing disease are about to become available, a conjugate vaccine against meningococcus A is in use for mass vaccination in Africa, and a protein-based vaccine against meningococcal B is ready for licensure. With the availability of these new vaccines, the world can finally be rid of meningococcal meningitis, thus rewriting a new chapter in medical history.

Palliative care from the beginning of treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer. Highlights from the "2010 ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium". Orlando, FL, USA. January 22-24, 2010.

Palliative care ought to be offered at the initiation of treatment for people who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, given the poor relative survival rate and the intractable symptom profile of those who have this life-limiting disease. In this article, we argue that palliative treatment of people with pancreatic cancer is not found in extending survival, but rather, in promoting quality of life. This argument is made by reviewing the literature on the state of palliative care in pancreatic cancer and by summarizing key studies presented at the "2010 ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium"

Updates in Gastrointestinal Oncology - insights from the 2008 44th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

We have reviewed the pivotal presentations rcelated to colorectal cancer (CRC) and other gastrointestinal malignancies from 2008 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). We have discussed the scientific findings and the impact on practice guidelines and ongoing clinical trials. The report on KRAS status in patients with metastatic CRC receiving epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) targeted antibody treatment has led to a change in National Comprehensive Cancer Network guideline that recommends only patients with wild-type KRAS tumor should receive this treatment.

Constructing peace: helping youth cope in the aftermath of 9/11.

The 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City represented a new strain on already fractured communities with low collective efficacy. Like the majority of citizens in the greater metropolitan area, researchers at the Community Research Group of Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health wanted to "do" something to help in the aftermath of the attacks. The group proposed to promote collective recovery, that is, rebuilding social connections in the city as the foundation for individual and group recovery. After several months of organizing, New York City RECOVERS (NYCR)--a network of orga

Demographic disaster: death/birth gap widens.

This article summarizes papers presented at a conference on the worsening of the demographic situation in Russia held in July, 1994. They find that "during 1993 alone the average life expectancy of men and women in the country decreased by 3.6 [to 59 years] and 2 years [to 72 years], respectively, and the difference between them for this index reached 13 years--for modern history, an unprecedented occurrence in peace time." It is also noted that the birth rate has declined significantly, mortality from injuries and poisoning has greatly increased, and the morbidity situation deteriorated. The

Parasites and Parasitology in this SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 World: An American Society of Parasitologists Presidential Address.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is one of the worst global health crises of this generation. The core of this pandemic is the rapid transmissibility of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, its high morbidity and mortality, and the presence of infectious asymptomatic carriers. As a result, COVID-19 has dominated this year's headlines and commanded significant research attention. As we consider SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is essential that scientists, governments, the media, and the general population also come to grips with the every

The insulin-like growth factor-I receptor and its role in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), an autoimmune component of Graves' disease, remains a disfiguring and potentially blinding condition. Here, the author reviews the role of insulin-like growth factor-I receptor pathway in TAO and how it might be therapeutically targeted. METHODS: The recent literature is reviewed. RESULTS: TAO involves reactivity of orbital connective tissues and their remodeling. While many of the details concerning the pathogenesis of TAO remain to be determined, several insights have come to light recently. Among them is the apparent involvem
