Ascher syndrome is characterized by double lip, blepharochalasis, and non-toxic goiter triad. This condition of unknown etiology usually occurs in patients younger than 20 years of age. In this case report, the authors present the diagnostic process of Ascher syndrome and surgical procedure of double lower lip in a female patient who applied to our clinic for prosthetic reasons. A 70-year old female patient was referred to our clinic with the chief complaint of incompatible dentures. The patient had been using the same complete dentures for 40 years. Extraoral clinical examination revealed pro

Paediatric chylous ascites in tropics is commonly caused by infections and trauma. We describe the clinical characteristics of an uncommon inherited cause of chylous ascites, Hennekam syndrome, treated by nutritional modification.

Removal of the fronto-orbital bandeau is one of the most critical components for procedures designed to correct anomalies of the craniofacial skeleton and remodel the anterior calvarial vault. It is also used to improve exposure of the anterior cranial fossa. It is arguably one of the more difficult portions of some craniofacial procedures. While the technique for fronto-orbito-sphenoid osteotomy has been frequently described, it has only been minimally detailed. Separation of bone in this region remains challenging due to the bone thickness, adjacent vital structures, and limited direct visib

Cysts and fistulae of the face and neck in children are formed before birth and correspond to the persistence of embryonic remnants that occur due to coalescence defects of embryonic buds or due to epidermal inclusion. They represent the most common pathological malformation of the face and neck. They may be separated according to their location into laterocervical cysts and fistulas or median cysts and fistulas. Their discovery may occur prematurely at birth or later during growth or in adulthood. Their treatment always requires surgical excision, which must be complete in order to prevent re

The history of plastic surgery in China dates back to about 17 centuries ago when Chinese ancestors documented a case of cleft lip repair, whereas the concepts of modern plastic surgery were imported from the West. In the last 50 years, the Chinese plastic surgeons have thrived and, through their hard work and even harder-gained experiences, witnessed the emergence of microsurgery in the 1960s, the development of craniofacial surgery during the 1970s, and cosmetic surgery becoming a trend since 1980s.With the fast renovation of treatment methods and the broadened spectrum of indications, more

The medical record and statistic staffs play a crucial role behind the achievements of treatment and research of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. The medical record and statistic staff are in charge of keeping patient medical records; creating databases; presenting information; sorting patient's information; providing patient medical records and related information for various medical teams and researchers; Besides, the medical record and statistic staff have collaboration with the Center of Cleft Lip-Palate, Khon Kaen University in association with the Tawanchai Project

We report a boy with Desbuquois dysplasia type 1. He had the typical skeletal changes: a "Swedish key" appearance of the proximal femora; advanced carpal ossification and other distinctive features of the hand, including an extra-ossification center at the base of the proximal phalanx of the index and middle fingers; dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger; and bifid distal phalanx of the thumb. In addition, he presented with very severe prenatal growth failure, respiratory distress as a neonate, subsequent failure to thrive and susceptibility to airway infection, and

This paper introduces a new tool to quantify and characterize asymmetry in bilaterally paired structures. This method uses deformable registration to produce a dense vector field describing the point correspondences between two images of bilaterally paired structures. The deformation vector field properties are clustered to detect and describe regions of relevant asymmetry. Three methods are provided to analyze the asymmetries: the global asymmetry score uses cluster features to quantify overall asymmetry, the local asymmetry score quantifies asymmetry in user-defined regions of interest, and

BACKGROUND: Anterior craniofacial duplication (diprosopus) is an extremely rare form of conjoined twins. The children share a single trunk with normal extremities and varying degrees of facial malformation. Duplication of specific structures, such as the nose (diprosopus dirrhinus), eyes (diprosopus tetraophthalmus), and ears, is possible. The authors present a case of partial facial duplication (diprosopus dirrhinus) in a male infant.
METHODS: The clinical and radiographic findings and the surgical correction and follow-up are described.
RESULTS: In a single surgical session, the authors we

BACKGROUND: The association of multiple cutaneous granular tumors with systemic defects is extremely rare. To date, 14 cases have been described.
CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old boy presented multiple nodular lesions on his arms and legs; facial dysmorphism and joint hypermobility were also present. Histopathologic examination of two nodules showed granular cell tumors. We review the literature regarding multiple granular cell cutaneous tumors in children with associated somatic defects and genetic syndromes.
CONCLUSIONS: The combination of multiple cutaneous granular tumors with alterations in o

Recently mutations in single genes have been found to cause dentofacial deviations like hypodontia, cleft lip and palate, as well as some craniofacial malformation syndromes like Aperts/Crouzon syndromes, cleidocranial dysostosis... These findings may lead to an overestimation and oversimplification of the role of genes in our daily life. The "one gene, one disease" principle has been applied too often, while most complex human characteristics are determined by a large number of genes, each leading to an increased liability for a certain condition. Whether this condition is expressed or not de

UNLABELLED: The Bannayan-Zonana is a dominant autosomal polymalformation syndrome.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of Bannayan-Zonana syndrome in a 3-year-old girl, who presented with macrocephaly and a cervical lipoma. The patient's mother had neurofibromatosis I. No mutation in the PTEN gene was found. The slowly progressive lipoma increased with age and the surgical reduction was necessary.
COMMENTARIES: Macrocephaly is constant in different syndromes characterized with multiple hamartomas. The multiple hamartomas syndrome represents an entity with a high variability of expression.

Premature fusion of cranial sutures underlies the clinical condition of 'craniosynostosis', a common human disorder that occurs in both nonsyndromic and syndromic forms. The subgroup of syndromic craniosynostoses usually associates limb abnormalities and facial dysmorphism to skull distortion. Over the past decade, some of the genes causing these phenotypes have been identified. Among these, the gene encoding FGFR2, one of four members of the fibroblast growth factor receptor(FGFR) family, has been shown to account for several severe conditions including Apert, Pfeiffer, Crouzon, Beare-Stevens

INTRODUCTION: Oblique and vertical rectus muscle anomalies have been commonly reported in patients with craniofacial syndromes, while horizontal rectus muscle anomalies have been uncommonly reported.
METHODS: Case report of a child with Crouzon's Syndrome who was found to have an anomalous medial rectus muscle insertion at surgery.
RESULTS: A bifid left medial rectus muscle insertion was found at surgery, requiring a small modification of the planned surgical procedure.
CONCLUSION: Anomalies of extraocular muscles may be present in patients with craniofacial syndromes and strabismus surgeon
