Tick control practices in Burkina Faso and acaricide resistance survey in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) geigyi (Acari: Ixodidae).

Traditional systems account for 95 % of the livestock produced in Burkina Faso. Tick infestation hampers livestock productivity in this area. However, little information exists on tick-control practices used by livestock farmers. We interviewed 60 stockbreeders working in traditional farming systems to obtain the first data on tick-control practices. Sixteen farmers (27 %) did not use conventional practices: seven removed ticks by hand or plastered cattle with dung or engine oil; nine farmers treated cattle with crop pesticides. Forty-four farmers (73 %) used mainly synthetic pyrethroids (SP;

Pest toxicology: the primary mechanisms of pesticide action.

Pesticides are used to control pests before they harm us or our crops. They are selective toxicants in the form and manner used. Pesticides must be effective without human or crop injury. They must also be safe relative to human and environmental toxicology. The study of how the pesticide works on the pest is referred to here as pest toxicology. About 700 pesticides, including insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides, act on perhaps 95 biochemical targets in pest insects, weeds, and destructive fungi. Current insecticides act primarily on four nerve targets, i.e., acetylcholinesterase, the vol

Regulation of coronafacoyl phytotoxin production by the PAS-LuxR family regulator CfaR in the common scab pathogen Streptomyces scabies.

Potato common scab is an economically important crop disease that is characterized by the formation of superficial, raised or pitted lesions on the potato tuber surface. The most widely distributed causative agent of the disease is Streptomyces scabies, which produces the phytotoxic secondary metabolite thaxtomin A that serves as a key virulence factor for the organism. Recently, it was demonstrated that S. scabies can also produce the phytotoxic secondary metabolite coronafacoyl-L-isoleucine (CFA-L-Ile) as well as other related metabolites in minor amounts. The expression of the biosynthetic

The Checkpoint Kinase SsChk2 Mediates Tebuconazole Resistance via Modulating Ergosterol Biosynthesis in Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.

Sclerotinia stem rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum severely constrains global crop production. This study explored the regulatory role of checkpoint kinase SsChk2 in tebuconazole resistance. Bioassays indicated that ΔSsChk2 mutants showed reduced sensitivity to three demethylation inhibitors (DMIs), compared with wild-type strain UF-1, while maintaining normal biological phenotypes. Transcription of SsChk2 was significantly suppressed in five UV-induced tebuconazole-resistant mutants and inhibitor-treated UF-1. Independent of SsCYP51 amino acid substitutions, the ΔSsChk2 strain exhibited …

Long-Term Elevated CO2 Improves Soil Health and Rice Yields in Paddy Fields.

Soil health underpins the productivity and ecosystem functioning of rice paddies, yet its response to elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) remains poorly understood. Here, soil health responses to eCO2 are evaluated using the two longest-running rice free-air CO2 enrichment experiments, spanning 12 and 15 years. The results show that long-term eCO2 significantly improves soil health, strengthening its capacity to support crop production, water purification, and climate change mitigation. Integration of global observations further indicates that these improvements are widespread and cumulative over …

Exogenous microbial antagonism affects the bioaugmentation of humus formation under different inoculation using Trichoderma reesei and Phanerochaete chrysosporium.

This study was aimed at exploring the effect of antagonism of Trichoderma reesei (T.r) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P.c) on humification during fermentation of rice (RS) and canola straw (CS). Results showed that exogeneous fungi accelerated straw degradation and enzyme activities of CMCase, xylanase and LiP. P.c inhibited the activity of LiP when co-existing with T.r beginning, it promoted the degradation of lignin and further increased the production of humus-like substances (HLS) and humic-like acid (HLA) in later fermentation when nutrients were insufficient. The HLS of RTP was 54.9 g/

Trade-offs between grain supply and soil conservation in the Grain for Green Program under changing climate: A case study in the Three Gorges Reservoir region.

Understanding the trade-offs between ecological benefits and cost of grain supply caused by ecosystem restoration is essential for decision-making. Nevertheless, due to climate change, the benefits of ecosystem restoration and cost of grain supply change across various spatial locations, thereby complicating the trade-offs. Taking one of China's largest scale ecosystem restorations, the Grain for Green Program (GGP), as an example, this study used the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) region as the case study area and combined the crop environment resource synthesis (CERES)-Crop model, future land-

iTRAQ proteome analysis reveals the underling mechanisms of foliage zinc-spraying to improve photosynthetic capacity and seed yields of Peaonia ostii 'Fengdan'.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a significant nutritional limitation to crop yield globally, particularly in calcareous soil environments. Tree peony of Peaonia ostii 'Fengdan' is regarded as an oil crop due to its seeds rich in alpha-linolenic acid, a beneficial compound for health promotion. However, low seed yield remains a primary challenge in attaining sufficient seed oil from tree peony. In this study, Zn fertilization was applied to soil or foliage of P. ostii 'Fengdan' in the growth period before fruit development. Our findings reveal that foliar Zn-spraying, as opposed to soil application, pr

Nitric oxide induces rice tolerance to excessive nickel by regulating nickel uptake, reactive oxygen species detoxification and defense-related gene expression.

Soil contamination with nickel (Ni) is a persistent threat to crop production worldwide. The present study examined the putative roles of nitric oxide (NO) in improving Ni-tolerance in rice. Our findings showed that application of exogenous sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, significantly improved the growth performance of rice seedlings when grown under excessive Ni. The enhanced Ni-tolerance of rice prompted by SNP could be ascribed to its ability to regulate Ni uptake, decrease Ni-induced oxidative stress as evidenced by reduced levels of hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and electro…

Advancing grapevine phenology predictions: a comparison of regression-based statistical learning approach and conventional models in mediterranean environment.

Climate conditions can significantly affect plant dormancy and growing season, impacting crop development and its productivity. Temperature is considered the primary driver of grapevine phenology, with endodormancy and ecodormancy largely regulated by chilling and forcing accumulations, respectively. Nevertheless, additional climatic factors, such as precipitation, radiation and atmospheric circulation patterns, may also contribute and regulate variability of different phenological phases. As hotspot of climate change, Mediterranean regions are witnessing negative compounding effects by enhanc
