Are ulcerative and nonulcerative interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome 2 distinct diseases? A study of coexisting conditions.

OBJECTIVES: Coexisting conditions associated with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) have not been fully explored by IC/PBS subtypes. We compared comorbid diagnoses/symptoms in women with ulcerative (ULC) and nonulcerative (N-ULC) IC/PBS and controls. METHODS: Adult women with IC/PBS and controls without IC/PBS completed a mailed survey assessing for 21 diagnoses. IC/PBS subtype was determined by hydrodistention reports. Standardized questionnaires assessed IC/PBS symptoms (Interstitial Cystitis Symptom/Problem Indexes [ICSI-PI]) and for undiagnosed fibromyalgia, irritabl

Prevalence of painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis-like symptoms in women: a population-based study in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing clinical interest in painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC, also known as bladder pain syndrome), estimating its prevalence is difficult because of its variable presentation and the lack of clear diagnostic criteria. In this study, we estimated the prevalence of PBS/IC-like urinary symptoms in adult women in the general population of South Korea. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted among 2,323 women (18-71 years of age), selected by geographically stratified random sampling, based on Korean census data. The sur

Association between response to pentosan polysulfate sodium therapy for interstitial cystitis and patient questionnaire-based treatment satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals who have had severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may develop post-coronavirus disease conditions, also known as long COVID. The symptoms of long COVID are nonspecific, and there are similarities between the symptoms of long COVID and those of Graves' disease (GD). Therefore, it is important to rule out GD in patients suspected of having long COVID. Telemedicine is widely used to avoid the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, owing to the lack of in-person examinations, diagnostic errors can occur. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 27-year-old J

CKAP4/p63 is a receptor for the frizzled-8 protein-related antiproliferative factor from interstitial cystitis patients.

Antiproliferative factor (APF) is a low molecular weight sialoglycopeptide that is secreted by bladder cells from interstitial cystitis patients and is a potent inhibitor of both normal bladder epithelial and bladder carcinoma cell proliferation. We hypothesized that APF may produce its antiproliferative effects by binding to a transmembrane receptor. This study demonstrates that cytoskeleton-associated protein 4/p63 (CKAP4/p63), a type II transmembrane receptor, binds with high affinity to APF. The antiproliferative activity of APF is effectively inhibited by preincubation with anti-CKAP4/p63

Biomaterials and Nanomedicine for Mucosal Repair and Inflammation Control in Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome: An Extensive Review.

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as bladder pain syndrome (BPS), is a chronic and devastating urologic disease. Its characteristics include the damage to the barrier function of bladder mucosa, inflammation related to nerve activity and chronic pelvic pain. Traditional treatments often only alleviate symptoms and cannot fundamentally treat this disease. This has inspired to seek new opportunities and strategies to use biomaterials and nanomedicine to reverse tissue damage and pain in patients with this disease. In this review, we comprehensively summarized the latest advances in innovati

Hyaluronic acid: Function and location in the urothelial barrier for bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis, an in vitro study.

Disruption of the glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-layer and urothelial barrier is an important aspect of the pathophysiology of bladder pain syndrome/ interstitial cystitis. Intravesical hyaluronic acid (HA) is often used in treatments for IC/BPS, however the role in the urothelial barrier is unknown. This study aims to clarify the location and functional contribution of HA in the urothelium, using an in vitro model. Immunohistochemistry was performed on human and porcine biopsies and on porcine cell cultures to evaluate the location of HA. Functional contribution was assessed through transepithelial

A standardized protocol for modified platelet-rich plasma collection for the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic and diagnostically challenging condition with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a potential treatment for IC/BPS. Nonetheless, conventional preparation methods are inefficient, necessitating an improved approach. OBJECTIVE: To design an effective and safe protocol for collecting PRP for intravesical injections for the treatment of IC/BPS. METHODS: We evaluated the feasibility of the PRP collection protocol from 17 patients. After venipuncture, blood was processed using a bl

Purine nucleoside phosphorylase as a target for the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome with and without Hunner lesions.

Chronic visceral pain disorders, such as interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), are difficult to treat, and therapies are limited in number and efficacy. Emerging evidence suggests that alterations in the enzyme purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNPase) may participate in oxidative injury and cellular damage. PNPase is important for the metabolism of 'tissue-protective' purine metabolites to 'tissue-damaging' purines that generate free radicals. The aim of this study is to test whether patients living with IC/BPS without or with Hunner lesions and irrespective of any therapies ex

The urothelial barrier in interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome: its form and function, an overview of preclinical models.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Investigating bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (IC/BPS) preclinically is challenging. Various research models have been used to mimic the urothelial barrier closely and replicate the disease. The aim of this review is to discuss preclinical research related to the urothelial barrier in context of IC/BPS. RECENT FINDINGS: In vivo models mimic IC/BPS mainly with toxic substances in the urine, with protaminesulfate and proteoglycan deglycolysation resembling a temporary impaired barrier as seen in IC/BPS. This temporary increased permeability has also been found in

Decreased autophagic activity of detrusor cells is involved in the inflammatory response of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Genome-wide association studies suggest that autophagy plays an important regulatory role in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Inflammation and immune regulation disorders are involved in the occurrence and development of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). However, the changes and roles of autophagy in IC/BPS have not been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate bladder autophagy and inflammation changes in patients with IC/BPS. METHODS: Bladder specimens (n = 5) from patients with cystectomy due to end-stage IC/BPS were collect
