OBJECTIVE: To assess the prognostic significance of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) using an in situ hybridization (ISH) method for destined cervical cytologic smears and a cocktail of biotinylated DNA probes for human papillomavirus (HPV) 6, 11, 16, 18, 31 and 33.

DNA hybridisation was used to type 26 samples from lesions of human patients from the Rio Doce Valley (Minas Gerais, Brazil) clinically diagnosed as having cutaneous leishmaniasis, using kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) cloned mini-circle probes specific for the Leishmania mexicana and Leishmania braziliensis complexes. Candida utilis was cultured from the blood of a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The candidemia was apparently associated with catheter implantation. The isolate was identified initially by standard methods and verified by molecular probing.
