Hydrodynamic control of oxygen intrusion and shear stabilizes functional zonation for nitrogen removal in an integrated UASB.

Aeration-reflux coupling can establish functional zonation in integrated upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, but the hydrodynamic basis remains insufficiently quantified. This study integrated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with metagenome-derived KO-genus profiling based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) from vertically resolved samples to link hydrodynamic characteristics with microbial functions. CFD analysis showed that aeration established an oxygen-exposed zone in the upper reactor, whereas internal reflux regulated downward bubble entrainment and gen

Insights into the conversion of odor compounds by a novel microbial agent during swine manure storage: a multi-omics integration of microbiome, metabolome and genome.

Deep-pit manure storage in intensive swine farming has emerged as a major source of malodorous emissions, posing significant environmental and public health concerns. This study developed a targeted microbial agent by systematic screening of malodor-degrading microorganisms (Alcaligenes faecalis A1, Bacillus velezensis B6, Pediococcus pentosaceus L4 and Meyerozyma guilliermondii Y7), and multi-omics approach was used to elucidate the mechanism of odorous compounds conversion during manure storage after inoculation with microbial agent. The agent significantly reduced emissions of NH3 (42.22%)

Microplastics exacerbate antibiotic resistance by regulating microbial and functional gene dynamics in sludge and food waste composting.

The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs) as co-contaminants in sewage sludge possess environmental concern. Nevertheless, the effect of specific MP types on ARGs propagation and the mechanistic drivers during composting require further elucidation. This study analyzed the impact of MPs polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and their mixture (PE+PP) on the propagation of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) during sludge composting. Results revealed that MPs significantly increased ARGs abundance, with the highest enrichment observed in PE (2.06 log-fold),

Soil functional microbial pathways related to GHGs emissions of coastal degraded mangroves-rice ecologies in Sundarban, India: A soil metagenomic approach.

Mangroves and their adjacent rice ecologies play a critical role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, particularly in tropical coastal wetlands. This study assessed the impact of mangrove degradation on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by comparing two distinct ecosystems; degraded mangroves, and adjacent rice system in the Sundarban, India. Annual CH4 and N2O emissions were quantified and linked to soil microbial energy metabolism pathways; methanogenesis, methanotrophy, sulphur (S), and nitrogen (N) metabolism by using whole-genome metagenomic analysis. The Kyoto Enc

Intensive flooding enhances methane but reduces carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions in reservoir drawdown areas.

Riparian ecosystems, vital interfaces for soil-atmosphere greenhouse gases (GHG) exchange, are increasingly subject to perturbations from extreme flooding events and artificial hydrological alterations. The resultant effects on soil microbiomes and GHG emissions, particularly under varying flooding regimes, remain poorly elucidated. Here, we conducted an in-situ flooding manipulation experiment across three elevation gradients in a reservoir drawdown area, applying continuous flooding (Extreme), 3-day flooding alternating with 3-day drainage (Moderate), and no flooding (Control) to evaluate re

Effects of anthropogenic activities on soil microbial communities and greenhouse gas fluxes in coastal wetlands of the Yellow River Delta, China.

Coastal wetlands are key emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Anthropogenic activities can alter the carbon and nitrogen cycle patterns in wetlands, thereby greatly affecting GHG fluxes. Previous studies have focused only on the effects of a single anthropogenic activity, thus, the effects of multiple anthropogenic activities on GHG fluxes and the underlying microbiological mechanisms remain unknown. Compared to natural reed areas (NA), our study investigated the four typical anthropogenic activities (Yellow River farmland (YA), sewage outfalls (SA), mariculture (MA), and oil extraction areas

Integrative multi-omics elucidates the impact of microalgae on growth, quality, phytohormones, and rhizosphere microbiome of Angelica sinensis.

Microalgae have recently been recognized as sustainable biofertilizers that improve soil fertility while enhancing crop performance. However, their roles in regulating medicinal plant growth and quality, as well as the underlying ecological mechanisms, remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically assessed the effects of three representative microalgae-Anabaena cylindrica (AC), Phormidium tenue (PT), and Chlorella vulgaris (CV)-on the growth, quality, hormonal regulation, soil nutrient dynamics, and rhizosphere microbiome of Angelica sinensis. Field inoculation trials demonstrated

Nitrogen-phosphorus stoichiometry and Cladophora growth affected by grass-sourced dissolved organic matter in the littoral zone of the Qinghai Lake, China.

Climate-driven lake expansion on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has triggered the extensive release of organic compounds through inundation-induced vegetation decomposition. This process generates substantial dissolved organic matter (DOM), potentially threatening alpine aquatic systems. In this work, the effects of grass-sourced DOM inputs on the nitrogen-to-phosphorus (N/P) ratio and Cladophora growth were studied. Field observation conducted in the lakeshore zone of Qinghai Lake showed that water column N/P ratios were closely related to Cladophora chlorophyll a (Chl.a) content. Microcosm experi

A vertical-flow constructed wetland-microalgal membrane photobioreactor integrated system for treating high-pollution-load marine aquaculture wastewater: A lab-scale study.

Individual biological water treatment techniques often prove ineffective in removing accumulated high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the late stages of biofloc aquaculture. To address this issue, we integrated a previously developed autotrophic denitrification and nitrification integrated constructed wetland (ADNI-CW) with a microalgal membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). Under high nitrogen and phosphorus pollution loads in the influent, the standalone ADNI-CW system achieved removal rates of only 24.17 % ± 2.82 % for total nitrogen (TN) and 25.30 % ± 2.59 % for total phosphorus (TP

The shock of benzalkonium chloride on aerobic granular sludge system and its microbiological mechanism.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are a kind of biocides and surfactants widely used around the world and wastewater treatment systems were identified as its largest pool. QACs could significantly inhibit microbial activity in biological treatment. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is an emerging wastewater biological treatment technology with high efficiency and resistance, but it is still unclear if AGS system could tolerate QACs shock. In this study, a typical QAC (benzalkonium chloride (BACC12)) was selected to investigate its effect on AGS system. Results indicate that BAC could inhibit th

Using Fe(II)/Fe(VI) activated peracetic acid as pretreatment of ultrafiltration for secondary effluent treatment: Water quality improvement and membrane fouling mitigation.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a technology commonly used to treat secondary effluents in wastewater reuse; however, it faces two main challenges: 1) membrane fouling and 2) inadequate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and organic micropollutants (OMPs) removal. To address these two issues, in this study, we applied peracetic acid (PAA), Fe(VI)/PAA, and Fe(II)/PAA as UF pretreatments. The results showed that the most effective pretreatment was Fe(II)/200 μM PAA, which reduced the total fouling resistance by 90.2%. In comparison, the reduction was only 29.7% with 200 μM PAA alone and 64.3% with Fe(VI)/200

Emergence of a new Neisseria meningitidis clonal complex 11 lineage 11.2 clade as an effective urogenital pathogen.

Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) clonal complex 11 (cc11) lineage is a hypervirulent pathogen responsible for outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease, including among men who have sex with men, and is increasingly associated with urogenital infections. Recently, clusters of Nm urethritis have emerged primarily among heterosexual males in the United States. We determined that nonencapsulated meningococcal isolates from an ongoing Nm urethritis outbreak among epidemiologically unrelated men in Columbus, Ohio, are linked to increased Nm urethritis cases in multiple US cities, including Atlanta and

Enhancing nitrogen and phosphorus removal for surface water remediation using ecological floating beds via FeC-plant coupling and root microenvironment reconfiguration.

Iron-carbon (FeC) materials can be incorporated into floating structures for in situ nitrogen and phosphorus removal during remediation of surface water with low C/N ratio. Plant incorporation may alleviate nitrification inhibition and limited reactive interfaces associated with FeC materials alone, yet the effects on nutrient removal performance and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Herein, an ecological floating bed coupling aquatic plants with FeC materials (EFB-FeC) was constructed, with a plant-gravel system (EFB-G) as control. At C/N ratio of 2, EFB-FeC achieved TN and

Responses of Groundwater Bacterial Communities to Extreme Rainfall in the Western North China Plain Based on 16S rRNA Sequencing.

Extreme rainfall events significantly affect groundwater systems by altering hydrogeological conditions and accelerating the migration of pollutants, exacerbating the ecological vulnerability of over-exploited areas. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the ecological response mechanisms of microbial communities under extreme rainfall. This study focuses on the over-exploited area in the western North China Plain. Based on 16S rRNA sequencing analysis of 49 groundwater samples collected from the typical alluvial-diluvial plain in the study area impacted by extreme precipitation i

Integrating image processing and machine learning to enhance microalgal nitrate removal via optimized CO2 holdup and pH-DO dynamics.

Efficient nitrate removal in microalgal photobioreactors requires effective control of CO₂ gas holdup, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO). This study introduces an integrated image-processing and machine-learning framework to optimize these parameters for nitrate removal using Scenedesmus sp. First, CO₂ gas–liquid hydrodynamics were evaluated in a 50-L bubble column without microalgae. Image analysis quantified gas holdup at CO₂ flow rates of 1–7 L/min and identified 5 L/min as the optimal rate, yielding a maximum holdup of 0.35 before bubble coalescence reduced retention. A dataset of 287 paired p

Phase-resolved monitoring reveals a dominant dissolved greenhouse gas footprint in the AOA process treating low C/N municipal wastewater.

The anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process offers a low-carbon pathway for biological nitrogen removal from low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio municipal wastewater, yet its complete greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint across gas and liquid phases remains unresolved. This study systematically quantified gaseous and dissolved CH4, CO2, and N2O at each operational stage of a laboratory-scale AOA system using phase-resolved monitoring. The system achieved stable nitrogen removal of 86.2%, with a CO2-equivalent direct gaseous emission factor was 25.2%-36.6% lower than that of the conventional wastewater

Nitrate reduction and iron (II) oxidation by subsurface bacteria from the Iberian Pyritic Belt: Insights into the biogeochemical cycles in this environment.

Nitrogen and iron are central to Earth's biogeochemical cycles. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), a vast iron reservoir, hosts extremophilic microorganisms adapted to high metal and sulfur concentrations. This study investigates two isolates from the deep IPB subsurface, Citrobacter telavivensis T1.2D-1 and Stutzerimonas stutzeri T2.31D-1, evaluating their nitrate-reducing capacity and the role of iron in denitrification, with emphasis on nitrate-dependent ferrous iron oxidation (NDFO). Both species could reduce nitrate in sucrose-, lactate-, or acetate-fed medium, while their consortium enhanced

Sustained nitrogen release and nitrogen-cycling functional genes jointly shape NH3-N2O loss trade-offs under long-term controlled-release fertilization.

Simultaneously mitigating ammonia (NH3) volatilization and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions without compromising crop productivity remains a critical challenge in sustainable nitrogen management. Drawing on a long-term field experiment established in 2013, this study integrated multi-year gaseous nitrogen loss measurements with metagenomic sequencing to assess the performance of polymer-coated fertilizer (PCF) and sulfur-coated fertilizer (SCF) relative to conventional urea (CU) in intensive maize production. Both coated urea treatments substantially suppressed NH3 losses relative to CU, with PCF
