Reduced need for alveolar bone grafting by presurgical orthopedics and primary gingivoperiosteoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate if narrowing and approximation of the alveolar cleft through presurgical alveolar molding followed by gingivoperiosteoplasty (GPP) at the time of lip repair reduces the need for a bone-grafting procedure. DESIGN: This was a retrospective blind study of patients with unilateral or bilateral alveolar clefts who underwent presurgical infant alveolar molding and GPP by a single surgeon. Alveolar bone formation was assessed prior to the eruption of the maxillary lateral incisor or canine by clinical examination, panoramic and periapical radiogra

Failure of tooth eruption in two patients with cerebral palsy and bruxism-a 10-year follow-up: a case report.

The aim of this paper was to analyze delayed tooth eruption in two children with cerebral palsy who had severe bruxism and to determine whether treatment could influence tooth eruption and alignment. Extraction of primary teeth was carried out and orthodontic treatment was considered due to severe tooth wear of primary teeth, lack of space, and development of a class III malocclusion. Analysis was based on clinical examination, photographs, radiographs, and dental casts. In both patients, early mixed dentition was delayed for more than 5 years. Calcification and root development of posterior p

Comparisons of facial growth in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate treated by different regimens for two-stage palatal repair.

The aim of this study was to compare facial development, particularly growth of the maxilla, of two groups of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate in whom palatal surgery had been done slightly differently, particularly the timing of the procedures. Two-stage palatal repair had been used at 8 (velar closure) and 102 months (hard palate surgery) at one cleft centre and at 20 and 62 months at another centre. Lateral roentgencephalograms were used to analyse the first sample of 20 patients, who were followed longitudinally from 7-16 years of age. The other group comprised 17 subjects in

Multiple Impacted Supernumerary Teeth in a Non-syndromic Class III Malocclusion Patient: A Case Report.

Supernumerary teeth are considered a numerical dental anomaly characterized by an excess of teeth. They may appear as single, double, or, more rarely, multiple teeth and can be associated with various syndromes. A 21-year-old male patient presented to the orthodontic department at the Dental Consultation and Treatment Center in Rabat, Morocco, seeking care for esthetic concerns. Clinical examination revealed a Class III malocclusion with crowding, the absence of tooth 44, and arch asymmetry. Panoramic radiography revealed the impaction of tooth 44 along with five additional supernumerary teeth

Case Report: Dental treatment under general anesthesia and dental management of a child with congenital ichthyosis.

Congenital ichthyosis is a disease in which the stratum corneum on the surface of the skin becomes thick from the time of the fetus and the barrier function of the skin is impaired. Congenital ichthyosis is a genetic disorder that causes ectodermal abnormalities and sometimes affects skin, nails, and tooth enamel. Therefore, some patients require special care in their daily life and during dental treatments. Here, the authors report a case of congenital ichthyosis that developed into severe dental caries at two years and nine months of age. The authors performed whole-exome sequencing in his p

Premature loss of maxillary primary incisor and delayed eruption of its successor: report of a case.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries to primary teeth represent one of the most common aetiologic factors of time-related eruption disturbances of permanent teeth. These include premature eruption, delayed eruption or impactions. CASE REPORT: A case of a 7.5-year-old male with delayed eruption of the maxillary permanent left incisor is presented. The case history revealed a trauma around the age of 3 involving its primary tooth predecessor and its extraction by a dentist about one year later due to frequent abscesses. The clinical examination showed an early mixed dentition and the single presence

Alternative donor site for alveolar bone grafting in adults with cleft lip and palate.

Grafting of the alveolar ridge with autogenous bone is an integral stage of contemporary management of complete cleft lip and palate cases. Alveolar bone grafting restores continuity of the dental arch, closes oronasal fistulae, supports the alar base, and facilitates spontaneous eruption of permanent teeth adjacent to the cleft. However, timing of the graft and the selection of materials have been topics of much debate in the literature. This article discusses an alternative donor site in cases where rehabilitation has passed the recommended time. Harvesting bone from the third molar regions

National clinical guidelines for the management of unerupted maxillary incisors in children.

This article summarises recently updated guidelines produced by the Clinical Governance Directorate of the British Orthodontic Society through the Clinical Standards Committee of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England (FDSRCS) on the management of unerupted maxillary incisor teeth in children. The maxillary incisor teeth usually erupt in the early mixed dentition but eruption disturbances can occur and are often attributable to local factors. A failure of eruption will affect the developing occlusion and potentially influence psychological development of the child.

Prevalence and distribution of dental caries in a late medieval population in Finland.

The aim was to document the late medieval material and to compare the results with findings in other medieval populations and present-day Finns. The sample consisted of the remains of 410 individuals and included 4581 permanent and 600 deciduous teeth. Age determination was based on the stage of dental development and on the attrition pattern in the molar region. Scoring the presence and location of caries was done visually with the aid of a dental probe. In the younger age groups, caries was most prevalent in the occlusal fissures, but the proportion of cavities at these sites declined with a
