BACKGROUND: Low bone mineral density (BMD) has been reported in 30.4% of adult patients with atopic dermatitis (AD).
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of low BMD in children with moderate to severe AD and to investigate the relation between BMD and corticosteroid and cyclosporine therapy.
METHODS: Lumbar spine BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 60 children (age 5-16 years) with moderate to severe AD. BMD (in g/cm(2)) was expressed in Z-scores, the number of SD above or below the mean value of an age- and sex-matched reference population. In

BACKGROUND: Recently, loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG) have been identified as the cause of ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) and also predisposing factors for atopic dermatitis (AD) and AD-associated phenotypes. Until now, over thirty mutations in FLG have been identified in patients with IV and AD, but the FLG mutation spectrum is not clear for Chinese Han patients with AD. This study aimed to investigate the role of FLG mutations in AD and AD-associated phenotypes in a Chinese population.
METHODS: We carried out a comprehensive sequencing of the entire FLG coding region in 261

Food and beverages may contain high amounts of histamine and thus may cause symptoms after ingestion. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of ingested histamine in atopic dermatitis. Patients with atopic dermatitis had to maintain a histamine-free diet for one week. Consecutively, double-blind, placebo-controlled provocations were performed with histamine-hydrochloride and placebo. The clinical outcome was assessed by determination of the SCORAD. Before and 30 min after each provocation blood was collected for measurement of plasma histamine levels and diamine oxidase activity. Th

Pimecrolimus has been approved for more than five years for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in Germany. An important difference in the safety profile of this drug compared with topical corticosteroids is the lack of potential side effects which are often observed upon prolonged use of topical corticosteroids (skin atrophy, steroid-induced rosacea or perioral dermatitis). Even after prolonged use in sensitive skin areas, no tolerance to this drug is induced, in contrast to that seen with topical corticosteroids. The most common side effect of pimecrolimus is burning. Placebo-controlled studi

PURPOSE: To study corneal abnormalities in the NC/Nga mouse, which is an animal model of atopic dermatitis.
METHODS: To study histopathologic changes of the eyelid, conjunctiva, and cornea, we extracted the eyeballs together with upper and lower eyelids and fixed them for examination by light and electron microscopy or snap-froze them for immunohistochemistry. Transferase mediated-dUTP digoxigenin nick-end labeling staining was performed to detect apoptotic cells. In order to assess eye scratching behavior and the effect of tacroliums hydrate ointment, we made video recordings.
RESULTS: Mice

BACKGROUND: Clinical and laboratory evidence increasingly supports the notion that food allergy plays a role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the prevalence of clinically significant food hypersensitivity among children with AD remains an unanswered question.
OBJECTIVE: To prospectively determine the prevalence of IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity among patients referred to a dermatology department for evaluation of AD, and to analyze the clinical relevance of these sensitizations in AD.
METHODS: We studied 44 infants of both sexes, aged less than 12 months old, who a

Prevalent mutations in the FLG gene underlie the common skin disorder ichthyosis vulgaris and are significant risk factors for atopic dermatitis (eczema). The recent publication of a strategy to sequence this difficult gene identifies a spectrum of both prevalent and rare mutations that collectively have a significant impact on susceptibility to atopic disease.

The so-called 'adjuvant' measures are an important part of atopic dermatitis (AD) consultations. The practitioner is the 'expert' in the patients' eyes in prescribing, proposing, counselling and replying to the questions concerning moisturizers, thermal spring water cures, the resort to alternative medical, and vaccinations. Moisturizers are aimed at rapidly restoring water in the epidermis, decreasing the sensitivity to irritants and improving the patients' comfort. The available products are usually composed of water, occlusive agents, humidifiers, varyingly combined with tensioactive agents

Thirty patients (19 boys and 11 girls) with atopic dermatitis complicated by pyodermia were treated with clarithromycin tablets (Fromilid, KRKA, Slovenia) in a dose of 7.5 mg/kg body weight twice a day. The average treatment course was 7 days. The severity of atopic dermatitis was evaluated by the SCARAD Index. Thirty patients of the reference group were treated with intramuscular lincomycin in a dose of 10-20 mg/kg body weight twice a day for 7 days. The difference in the average SCORAD Index before and after the treatment with clarithromycin amounted to 19.95 vs 14.68 (p < 0.005) with the us

Atopic dermatitis (AD) has cellular immunohistochemical features similar to those of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). There is plenty of evidence for T-cell activation in this disease such us the presence of T-lymphocytes which carry CD30, CD3, CD4, CD45RO markers. The aim of this study was to show the presence of lymphocyte-surface antigens including CD30, CD3, CD4, CD45RO in patients with acute AD and to compare the presence of the same molecules in patients with acute ACD (nickel-induced) because of the possible morphologic difference of these two entities. The presence of the stated mole

BACKGROUND: Rosacea and perioral dermatitis (PD) are common dermatoses, the aetiology and pathogenesis of which remain speculative. Objectives To investigate skin barrier function and features of atopy in both diseases.
METHODS: We studied 75 patients with rosacea and 75 with PD. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was measured in three regions of the face (lateral chin, perinasal cheek, side of the nose) and the patients were assessed for atopy by clinical criteria, prick tests and specific IgE against a mixture of aeroallergens (CAP SX1). The control group consisted of 125 individuals with no

Atopic dermatitis (AD) in childhood is a common disease with prevalence rates as high as 20%. Its early onset in infancy and its chronic relapsing course puts a special burden on families. Supporting parents in dealing with the management of AD presents a challenge for physicians. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a structured parental training program on managing AD in children. Two-hundred and four families participated in a prospective, randomized controlled trial. Children (5 months to 12 years in age) had suffered from moderate-to-severe AD for at least 4 months.

Many patients who present for evaluation of allergic contact dermatitis have an atopic diathesis. Although the immunologic basis of atopic dermatitis differs from that of allergic contact dermatitis--and patients with atopic dermatitis are less easily sensitized under experimental conditions--atopic patients do develop allergic contact dermatitis, and patch testing is a valuable part of their medical care. Delayed (7-day) patch test readings are especially important in atopic patients to distinguish allergy from irritancy and to evaluate for steroid allergy. The utility of atopy patch tests to

Atopic dermatitis is a multifactorial disorder probably caused by environmental factors in combination with susceptibility genes. The clinical similarity between atopic dermatitis and the eczema manifestation in patients with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome made the previously identified WAS gene in chromosome sub-band Xpl 1.23 an interesting candidate gene for atopic dermatitis. We studied linkage and association to the WAS gene region using four polymorphic microsatellite markers in 406 Swedish families with at least two siblings affected with atopic dermatitis (in total 1514 individuals). In the a

BACKGROUND: Adverse reactions to food play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). In infancy and childhood, food allergies are observed in up to 30%, whereas nonallergic hypersensitivity reactions (pseudoallergic reactions) towards food additives have been reported to occur between 2 and 7%. By contrast, sensitizations towards food allergens are rarely of clinical relevance in adults and little data is available on nonallergic hypersensitivity reactions. To date the role of pseudoallergic reactions as an aggravating factor in AD of adult patients remains controversial

Colonization of Staphylococcus aureus is commonly observed in skin lesions of atopic dermatitis (AD) patients, and scratching of the pruritic lesions may lead to reiterative bacteremia. It is possible that acute native valve endocarditis may develop in a patient with uncontrolled AD; the latter condition may be a risk factor for the former. We report two cases of acute aortic and/or mitral valve endocarditis complicated with recurrent cutaneous infections caused by severe AD. The patients underwent successful surgical treatment of the heart lesions, plus intensive postoperative antibiotics and
