Rosmarinus officinalis L. as cause of contact dermatitis.

Because of the widespread use of botanicals, it has become crucial for health professionals to improve their knowledge about safety problems. Several herbal medicines contain chemicals with allergenic properties responsible for contact dermatitis. Among these, one is Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary), a plant used since ancient times in folk medicine; at the present time it is used worldwide as a spice and flavouring agent, as a preservative and for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The present article aims to revise and summarise scientific literature reporting cases of contact dermatitis c

Identification of metallic items that caused nickel dermatitis in Danish patients.

INTRODUCTION: Nickel allergy is prevalent as assessed by epidemiological studies. OBJECTIVES: In an attempt to further identify and characterize sources that may result in nickel allergy and dermatitis, we analysed items identified by nickel-allergic dermatitis patients as causative of nickel dermatitis by using the dimethylglyoxime (DMG) test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dermatitis patients with nickel allergy of current relevance were identified over a 2-year period in a tertiary referral patch test centre. When possible, their work tools and personal items were examined with the DMG test. RES

Allergic contact dermatitis to synthetic rubber gloves: changing trends in patch test reactions to accelerators.

BACKGROUND: Rubber gloves are one of the most frequent causes of occupational allergic contact dermatitis, especially in health care workers. OBSERVATIONS: We describe 23 patients with allergic contact dermatitis due to rubber accelerators in rubber gloves, some with disseminated dermatitis, treated during a 2-year period. Three had IgE-mediated latex allergies. Sixteen were health care workers from a single institution whose dermatitis was temporally related to the switch to latex-safe gloves. Each had positive patch test reactions to 1 or more rubber accelerators, including carbamates, thiu

Allergic contact dermatitis among maintenance and clerical workers in a military population.

Contact dermatitis is one of the leading causes of occupational morbidity and absenteeism and has become an intolerable cause of missed workdays and health problems in the Israeli military. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of contact dermatitis in maintenance and clerical workers, the common allergens causing it, and the background of atopy in the subjects in order to design preventive measures. Medical records of all recruits to the Israel Defense Forces from 2000 to 2003 were reviewed for contact dermatitis. The 102 cases found were further assessed for job assignment, atopic

Isothiazolinone Sensitization in Gran Canaria (Spain). A Follow-up of 20 Years.

BACKGROUND: Isothiazolinones are responsible for an epidemic of allergic contact dermatitis across Europe over the past 2 decades. Regulatory restrictions on methylisothiazolinone (MI) in cosmetics have been followed by declining sensitization rates in surveillance networks. Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and octylisothiazolinone (OIT) have emerged as sensitizers of growing clinical relevance. OBJECTIVE: To characterize temporal trends in sensitization to MCI/MI, MI, BIT, and OIT over more than 2 decades at a single center in Gran Canaria, Spain. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of patients patch-t

Atopy and Sensitization to Allergens Known to Cause Systemic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) associated with respiratory atopy may represent a form of systemic contact dermatitis (SCD), whereby AD flares after ingestion or inhalation of allergens. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of positive patch tests to allergens known to cause SCD in AD patients with and without respiratory atopy. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients with AD patch tested to 23 allergens known to cause SCD. Positive patch tests were compared between AD patients with and without respiratory atopy, stratified by age and wet or dry work oc

Clinical examinations to validate self-completion questionnaires: dermatitis in the UK printing industry.

A self-completion questionnaire sent to 2600 Nottinghamshire members of the Graphical Paper and Media Union elicited a 62% response. Forty one per cent of respondents reported suffering a skin complaint at some time and 11% had a current skin problem on the hand. This paper reports the validation stage of the study. Samples of 45 'cases' of self-reported dermatitis and 60 'controls', who reported they had never suffered a skin complaint, were clinically examined. All 45 self-reported cases were clinically confirmed as dermatitis. Occupationally related irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) was dia

Nickel Persists, Chromium Declines: A 26-Year Perspective on Metal Sensitization and Clinical Relevance from Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Metal allergens remain major causes of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) worldwide. In Turkey, restrictions on nickel release (2018) and hexavalent chromium in leather (2018) and cement (2022) have been implemented, but their impact remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess long-term metal sensitization patterns and evaluate occupational/nonoccupational metal-related ACD. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 2932 patients patch-tested with nickel sulfate 5% pet., cobalt chloride 1% pet., potassium dichromate 0.5% pet., and palladium chloride 1-2% pet. (1996-2021). Multivariate logis

Addition of ferrous sulfate to cement and risk of chromium dermatitis among construction workers.

Lowering the water-soluble chromium content of cement to < 2 ppm has been suggested to diminish the risk of allergic hand dermatitis caused by chromium among construction workers. The prevalence of chromium dermatitis was determined for a representative sample of 913 house construction workers and 707 concrete element prefabrication workers, with a questionnaire and clinical examination, before the use of cement with such a low content of water-soluble chromium was started on Finnish construction sites in 1987. The prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis caused by water-soluble chromium, dia

Occupational anaphylaxis-Data from the anaphylaxis registry.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data on occupational anaphylaxis is scarce, and there is a need of more knowledge about work-related anaphylactic episodes. METHODS: Based on the data of the Anaphylaxis Registry, we identified cases related to occupational exposure and analyzed the elicitors, demographics, severity of clinical reaction and management. RESULTS: Since 2017, 5851 cases with an information about the occupational relation of the anaphylactic episode were registered whereby 225 (3.8%) were assigned to be caused by an occupational allergen. The vast majority of these occupational anaphyla

Differences between hairdressers and consumers in skin exposure to hair cosmetic products: A review.

Hairdressers are at high risk of developing occupational hand eczema. Opinions on the health and safety concerns of nonfood consumer products, such as cosmetics and their ingredients, consider the exposure of a "common consumer," which may not account for occupational exposure of hairdressers. As a result, there is a parlous scenario in which serious safety concerns about occupational exposures are present. The purpose of this review is to compare the frequency of exposure to various types of hair cosmetic products among hairdressers and consumers. Database searches for this review yielded a t

The (new) occupational disease no. 5101: "Severe or recurrent skin diseases".

Occupational dermatoses are among the most common occupational diseases, with BK 5101 accounting for the largest proportion. Historically, the latter was also the most frequently reported group of occupational diseases within the working age population. More than 80,000 suspected cases of occupational diseases were notified in 2019, of which 19,883 related to BK 5101. In Germany, work-related hand eczema accounts for 90 % of all BK 5101 diseases, and consists mainly of contact eczema. Especially young people working in the hairdressing sector, health care, metal, food or construction industrie

A single accidental exposure may result in a chemical burn, primary sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis.

It is known from experimental studies that antigenic potency and the concentration of antigen determine whether exposure to an antigen will result in sensitization. A single accidental exposure to concentrated antigen may therefore induce primary sensitization. The purpose of this report was to collect clinical cases in which a single exposure had resulted in contact dermatitis suspected to be allergic. Only patients without previous relevant skin symptoms were included. Patch testing was used to demonstrate sensitization. 6 patients developed occupational allergic contact dermatitis from acci

Chemical Leukoderma.

Chemical leukoderma, often clinically mimicking idiopathic vitiligo and other congenital and acquired hypopigmentation, is an acquired form of cutaneous pigment loss caused by exposure to a variety of chemicals that act through selective melanocytotoxicity. Most of these chemicals are phenols and aromatic or aliphatic catechols derivatives. These chemicals, however, are harmful for melanocytes in individuals with an individual susceptibility. Nowadays, chemical leukoderma is fairly common, caused by common domestic products. The presence of numerous acquired confetti- or pea-sized macules is c
