Initial manifestations of disordered eating behavior: dieting versus binging.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the onset of binge eating and dieting in 108 women with bulimia nervosa to determine whether (1) dieting always preceded binge eating; (2) dieting always preceded the onset of bulimia nervosa; and (3) individuals who manifested early initial binge eating differed from those whose earliest manifestation of disordered eating behavior was dieting in terms of lifetime psychopathology and temperament. METHOD: One hundred eight women were assessed at entry to a randomized clinical trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa using structured diagnostic methodolog

The impact of stress, fear of fatness, and panic disorder with agoraphobia on eating disorder symptomatology: a case study.

This case describes the interaction between an anxiety disorder and an eating disorder. It shows how the interplay between stress, fear of fatness, and panic disorder with agoraphobia changed a patient's eating disorder from bulimia nervosa to to an eating disorder focused on food restriction. Implications for the assessment and treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia and an eating disorder focused on food restriction are discussed.

Perceptions held by obese children and their parents: implications for weight control intervention.

The study was designed to identify some of the psychosocial barriers to compliance in a hospital-based weight control intervention program for adolescents. Forty obese adolescents, 10 to 16 years of age, and their parents were surveyed prior to participation in a behavioral change weight control program at a major teaching hospital. Significant correlations were obtained between weight loss outcome and six factors. In obese adolescents, weight loss was significantly associated with their beliefs regarding: (1) personal control over weight, (2) barriers or difficulty of losing weight, (3) medic

Hunger perceptions and satiety responses among normal-weight bulimics and normals to a high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich food.

The hunger perceptions and satiety responses to a high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich food among 10 normal-weight females who met the DSM-III criteria for bulimia were compared with 10 normal-weight females who denied a current or past history of eating or weight disorders. As indicated by self-report responses on the Hunger-Satiety Questionnaire, bulimics did not differ from the normals in their perceptions of hunger sensations. Differences, however, were detected in the responses following eating. Most notably, the bulimics reported feelings of irritability, nervousness, tenseness and depression

Weight reduction methods of college women.

Weight reduction attitudes and practices were obtained from a sample of 400 female students. Forty-eight percent reported using a weight loss program since admission to college. The programs most often selected included hypocaloric diets and exercise. Although the majority of subjects rated hypocaloric diets and exercise as good methods for weight reduction and indicated that they would recommend them to others, these methods supported the slowest rate of weight loss. Evidently, the side effects and costs of the other programs offset the rapid weight loss. Other methods, in descending order of

[Disorders of glucose metabolism and manifestation of diabetes during treatment of endogenous hypertriglyceridemias (author's transl)].

Disturbances of glucose metabolism are frequent concomitant findings with hypertriglyceridemias (HTG). Whether the manifestation of diabetes mellitus is favored by it is, however, unknown. In an observation study disturbed glucose metabolism was present in 47 of 91 cases of HTG, without drug therapy of diabetes being carried out. The study shows that glucose metabolism disorders in HTG annually regress in about 3% of cases and about 0.6 to 0.7% of the cases require drug treatment. Since retrospective and prospective analyses show that development of glucose tolerance disorders is closely relat

The effect of weight reduction on biliary lipid metabolism in patients with hyperlipoproteinemia type IV.

Nine slightly obese patients with hyperlipoproteinemia type IV were studied, before and after a mean weight reduction of about 15 kg, with respect to bile acid kinetics, cholesterol balance and biliary lipid composition. The bile acid pool size was not consistently changed. The synthesis of cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid was decreased by about 65% and 50%, respectively. The net steroid balance, calculated as bile acid synthesis plus fecal excretion of neutral steroids minus dietary cholesterol intake, was reduced by about 50%. In all but one of the patients bile was supersaturated with

Very-low-calorie diet in the treatment of massive obesity: preliminary experience.

Twenty-two consecutive obese patients were given very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) in the form of a casein and lactose preparation dissolved in orange juice containing 43.0 g protein, 30.4 g carbohydrate and 1.1 g lipid in a total of 317 kcal (1.3 MJ) daily. VLCD was given intermittently in eight-week periods alternating with three-week periods of conventional diet (900-1200 kcal, 3.8-5.0 MJ) to ensure recuperation of lean body mass and to establish a therapy which may facilitate indefinite patient compliance. In case of persisting hunger, diethyl-propion was given in small doses. The median observ

The adipocyte volume in human adipose tissue: II. Observations in diabetes mellitus, primary hyperlipoproteinemia and weight reduction.

Body-weight index does not appear suitable as a measure of metabolic risk, since the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolaemia increases only up to a Broca index of 1.2. Attempts were therefore made to demonstrate an abnormal adipocyte enlargement in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of the abdomen in patients suffering from various metabolic disorders. To eliminate the influence of sex and body-weight index, normal curves of the adipocyte volumes in 142 controls were used as basis of comparison. Adipocyte hypertrophy exceeding the degree predicted by the no

Association Between the Sulfur Microbial Diet and Risk of Colorectal Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Sulfur-metabolizing bacteria that reduce dietary sulfur to hydrogen sulfide have been associated with colorectal cancer (CRC). However, there are limited studies investigating the association between diet and sulfur-metabolizing bacteria in the development of CRC. OBJECTIVE: To develop a dietary score that correlates with gut sulfur-metabolizing bacteria and to examine its association with CRC risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study included data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2014), Nurses' Health Study (1984-2016), and Nurses'

A New Zealand green-lipped mussel oil-enriched high-fat diet exhibits beneficial effects on body weight and metabolism in mice.

To induce diet-induced obesity (DIO) in rodents, diets high in saturated fat and/or carbohydrates are commonly used. In the laboratory, standardised diets evolved over time without paying particular attention to the effect of fat composition on metabolic alterations. In the present study, customised high-fat diets (HFD) enriched with a combination of lard and different concentrations of New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) oil or MSC Hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae, blue grenadier) liver oil, important sources of n-3 PUFA, in comparison with a solely lard-based diet, were fed to

The efficacy of the appetite suppressant, diethylpropion, is dependent on both when it is given (day vs. night) and under conditions of high fat dietary restriction.

Obesity is a public health problem caused by excessive consumption of high caloric diets and/or lack of physical activity. Although treatments for obesity include low caloric diets and exercise programs, these activities frequently are supplemented with appetite suppressants. For the short-term treatment of weight loss, diethylpropion (DEP) is a commonly used appetite suppressant. However, little is known with regard to how to improve its weight loss efficacy. We therefore evaluated, in rats, two administration protocols where the animals received daily injections of DEP. First, when these noc

Health benefits and risk associated with adopting a vegetarian diet.

A vegetarian diet may be adopted for various reasons that can include ecological, economic, religious, ethical and health considerations. In the latter case they arise from the desire to lose weight, in tackling obesity, improving physical fitness and/or in reducing the risk of acquiring certain diseases. It has been shown that properly applied vegetarian diet is the most effective way of reducing body mass (expressed as BMI), improving the plasma lipid profile and in decreasing the incidence of high arterial blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome and arterioscleros

Longitudinal Changes in Left Ventricular Structure and Function During a Dietary Weight-Management Trial in Adults with Heart Failure, Type 2 Diabetes, and Obesity: A Secondary Analysis of Pro-HEART.

Background: Obesity is associated with adverse cardiac remodeling in heart failure (HF), but changes during dietary weight management are not well described. We examined longitudinal changes in left ventricular (LV) structure and systolic function during a dietary weight-management intervention. Methods: Pro-HEART participants were randomized to high-protein or standard-protein hypocaloric diets. LV end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD), ejection fraction (LVEF), and posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) were assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 15 months. Linear mixed-effects models tested time and diet

Diet quality and weight change among overweight and obese postpartum women enrolled in a behavioral intervention program.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum weight retention is a risk factor for long-term weight gain. Encouraging new mothers to consume a healthy diet may result in weight loss. OBJECTIVE: To assess predictors of diet quality during the early postpartum period; to determine whether diet quality, energy intake, and lactation status predicted weight change from 5 to 15 months postpartum; and to determine whether an intervention improved diet quality, reduced energy intake, and achieved greater weight loss compared with usual care. DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial (KAN-DO: Kids and Adults Now-Defeat Obesity),

Nutrigenetic Tailored Diet Results in Long-Term (12 Months) Weight-Loss Compliance and Improved Cardiometabolic Outcomes in a Real-World Community-Based Setting.

Background/Objectives: Individual responses to weight-loss diets vary widely due to genetic, metabolic, and lifestyle factors, motivating individualized approaches over "one-size-fits-all" advice. We aimed to evaluate long-term (12-month) weight loss, weight maintenance, and cardiometabolic outcomes of a cohort following a nutrigenetically tailored Mediterranean-style dietary program in a real-world, community setting. Methods: The retrospective data cohort included 426 Israeli adults (mean BMI 32.11 ± 4.58 kg/m2; 66.9% women) who participated in a nutrigenetic weight-loss program. Following n

Weight management in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A randomized controlled trial of two dietary approaches.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is equal to or greater than the general population. METHODS: Overweight/obese adults (BMI ≥25 kg/m2 ) with mild-to-moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities were randomized to an enhanced stop light diet (eSLD = SLD + portion-controlled meals, n = 78) or a conventional diet (CD, n = 72) for an 18 months trial (6 months weight loss, 12 months maintenance). Participants were asked to increase physical activity (150 min/week), self-monitor diet and physical activity and atten
