Tobacco use and pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports phenomenological, clinical, epidemiological and biological links between problem/pathological gambling and tobacco use. An improved understanding of the relationship would be helpful in treating individuals with co-occurring pathological gambling and nicotine dependence. METHODS: This study investigates the tobacco use behaviors of 225 adults (mean age +/- SD = 47.3 +/- 11.0 years; number of women = 120 [53.3%]) who were recruited for pharmacological treatment of pathological gambling. All subjects met criteria for pathological gambling based upon the Structured

Callous/unemotional traits and social-cognitive processes in adjudicated youths.

OBJECTIVE: There seem to be two dimensions associated with psychopathic traits in youths: a callous/unemotional factor (C/U) and an impulsivity/conduct problems factor (I/CP). This study sought to clarify the nature of these two factors and examine their relation with social-cognitive problems in incarcerated adolescents. METHOD: One hundred sixty-nine male and female adjudicated youths were recruited for participation. Self-report measures and archival data were used to assess psychopathic traits, emotional distress, behavioral dysregulation, social-cognitive processes, and delinquency sever

[Classification of mental disorders of soldiers participating in peace missions and warfare actions].

Numerous media reports (press, radio, television) and several scientific publications on psychiatric disorders among Polish soldiers participating in peace missions in Iraq indicate that there is a serious threat caused by the disorders defined in the DSM-IV classification as: acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The authors analyzed psychiatric documentation and conducted their own researches, which revealed that adjustment disorders, especially with anxiety, are the main psychiatric problem among Polish soldiers in Iraq, while incidence of ASD and PTSD is ve

Gender differences in bipolar disorder: age of onset, course, comorbidity, and symptom presentation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether men and women with bipolar disorder differ in age of onset, course of illness, number of suicide attempts, comorbidity rates and symptom presentation. METHOD: Data were collected from 211 (121 women; 90 men) adults using the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies, medical records, and additional information gathered from relatives. RESULTS: Most gender comparisons showed no evidence of differences. Nonetheless, more men than women reported mania at the onset of bipolar I disorder. Men also had higher rates of comorbid alcohol abuse/dependence, cannabis abuse

Longitudinal studies of child mental disorders in the general population: A systematic review of study characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal studies of child mental disorders in the general population (herein study) investigate trends in prevalence, inci … t frequently conducted in the United States and at the city/town level. Internalizing disorders and disruptive, impulse control, and conduct disorders were the most frequently assessed mental disorders. Of studies reporting methods of disorder assessment, almost all used measurement scales. Individual, familial and environmental risk and protective factors and sequelae were examined. CONCLUSIONS: …

Obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder.

A wide range of psychiatric and medical disorders have been hypothesized to be related to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and thus, together, to form a family of disorders known as obsessive compulsive (or OCD) spectrum disorder. The grouping of these conditions is based on their phenomenological similarities with OCD (i.e., obsessive thinking and/or compulsive behaviors), as well as their having courses of illness, comorbidity and family history patterns, biological abnormalities, and treatment responses similar to OCD. Proposed OCD spectrum disorders have included body dysmorphic disorde

Defense styles in Intermittent Explosive Disorder.

The overreliance on immature and/or neurotic defense mechanisms, as opposed to more mature defensive functioning has been linked to several psychiatric disorders. However, to date, the role of defense styles among individuals with Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) has not been examined. Given that individuals with IED display difficulties controlling their anger and aggression, one might expect these individuals to exhibit more immature and less mature defense styles. The current study compared participants with IED to a personality disorder (PD) comparison group, as well as to healthy vol

The Bears Family Projective Test: evaluating stories of children with emotional difficulties.

The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the storytelling of children with emotional difficulties. Forty children with emotional and relational difficulties (inhibited and impulsive), ages between 5.5 and 9.4 years old, were assessed by a multiaxial procedure and the bears family projective test. The bears family test is a constructive-thematic-projective method based on an anthropomorphic family of bears that children can manipulate to tell a story. The stories of 40 children without emotional difficulties (matched by IQ, socio-economic status, and gender) and 322 typically developin

Relationship of Internet addiction with impulsivity and severity of psychopathology among Turkish university students.

The previous studies have found a relationship between IA and both impulsivity and psychopathology when they were considered separately. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of Internet addiction (IA) with impulsivity and severity of psychopathology among Turkish university students. We also wanted to control the effect of impulsivity dimensions on the relationship between IA and psychopathology. A total of 319 university students from two universities in Ankara participated to the study. Students were assessed through the Internet Addiction Scale (IAS), the Symptom Checkl

Recognizing Psychiatric Comorbidity With Reading Disorders.

Reading disorder (RD), a specific learning disorder (SLD) of reading that includes impairment in word reading, reading fluency, and/or reading comprehension, is common in the general population but often is not comprehensively understood or assessed in mental health settings. In education settings, comorbid mental and associated disorders may be inadequately integrated into intervention plans. Assessment and intervention for RD may be delayed or absent in children with frequently co-occurring mental disorders not fully responding to treatment in both school and mental health settings. To addre

Inhibitory control and problematic Internet-pornography use - The important balancing role of the insula.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diminished control over a specific behavior is a core characteristic in addictive behaviors such as problematic Internet-pornography (IP) use. First studies suggest that a hyperactivity of the impulsive system is one reason for impulsive behaviors in the context of problematic IP use. The tripartite-process theory of addiction explains neurocognitive mechanisms beyond common dual-process theories in addictive behaviors. However, the role of the reflective and interoceptive system is still unresolved. METHODS: The study comprised a stop-signal task (SST) including neutral

Development of a screening questionnaire for DSM-5 intermittent explosive disorder (IED-SQ).

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to develop and test a screening approach to identify individuals with DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), a disorder of recurrent, problematic, impulsive aggression. METHODS: A screening approach to diagnose DSM-5 IED (IED-SQ) was developed by combining items related to life history of aggression and items related to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for IED. In study 1, the IED-SQ was studied in 72 adult participants; 33 that met DSM-5 criteria for lifetime IED and 39 that did not. In study 2, the IED-SQ was given to 740 undergraduates at a US universi

Reward sensitivity: issues of measurement, and achieving consilience between human and animal phenotypes.

Reward is a concept fundamental to discussions of drug abuse and addiction. The idea that altered sensitivity to either drug-reward, or to rewards in general, contributes to, or results from, drug-taking is a common theme in several theories of addiction. However, the concept of reward is problematic in that it is used to refer to apparently different behavioural phenomena, and even to diverse neurobiological processes (reward pathways). Whether these different phenomena are different behavioural expressions of a common underlying process is not established, and much research suggests that the

Impact of dopamine agonists on compulsive behaviors: a case series of pramipexole-induced pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine agonists (DAs), long used in treating Parkinson's disease and effective in relieving symptoms of restless legs syndrome, have frequently been reported to induce problematic compulsive behaviors (e.g., obsessive gambling, hypersexuality) in individuals who had never had difficulties with such behaviors before. OBJECTIVE: The authors report two cases that add to a small-but-growing literature suggesting that these drugs be dispensed with appropriate caution. METHOD: The authors describe two patients seen in a psychiatric setting-one, after a suicide attempt, and one with d

A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of fluoxetine in patients with intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a disorder of impulsive aggression that affects as many as 7.3% of the U.S. population during some period of life. Since central serotonergic (5-HT) system dysfunction is related to impulsive aggressive behavior, pharmacologic enhancement of 5-HT activity should reduce impulsive aggressive behavior in individuals with IED. METHOD: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of the selective 5-HT uptake inhibitor fluoxetine was conducted in 100 individuals with IED (research diagnostic criteria) and current histories of impulsive ag

Impulsivity and positive psychotic symptoms influence hostility in methamphetamine users.

Methamphetamine (MA) use is associated with hostility, aggression, and positive psychotic symptoms. However, little is known of the processes or mechanisms that underlie this relationship. The present research was designed to investigate putative mediating and moderating variables between MA dependence and hostility in a sample of injecting MA users (N=237). Both positive symptoms of psychosis and higher levels of impulsivity functioned as mediators and moderators of this relationship. This pattern of findings suggests that MA use leads to greater hostility by increasing positive psychotic sym

Response inhibition in borderline personality disorder: performance in a Go/Nogo task.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder is associated with subtle neuropsychological deficits. A potential impairment of response inhibition is of major interest, since it could be related to impulsivity as a clinical feature of borderline personality disorder. SAMPLING AND METHODS: Response inhibition was studied in an auditory Go/Nogo paradigm in a sample of 20 female inpatients with borderline personality disorder and 18 healthy controls. The main measures of interest were general task performance, errors and reaction times. RESULTS: Patients with borderline personality disorder perfo

A multidimensional ambivalence model of chocolate craving: construct validity and associations with chocolate consumption and disordered eating.

This study tested the construct validity of a multidimensional ambivalence model of chocolate craving, and examined the concurrent and discriminant validity of the model with respect to chocolate consumption and disordered eating behaviors. The Orientation to Chocolate Questionnaire (OCQ) was administered to 312 university students (79.5% female) along with measures of chocolate consumption and disordered eating. Results supported a three-factor model of chocolate craving incorporating approach and avoidance inclinations and feelings of guilt. These craving dimensions differentially predicted
