We present a case of a 46-year-old man with a pulsatile mass in the left inferior abdominal quadrant that irradiated a continuous murmur extending to the left lumbar region. Despite an 8-year history of cardiomegaly, he appeared to be asymptomatic except for the mass and could recollect no traumatic injury or surgery that might have caused it. Near the vertebral column, we found a small scar, the result of spinal disk surgery 11 years before. Following chest radiography and electrocardiography, we located the suspected arteriovenous fistula by selective angiography of the aorta and its branche

BACKGROUND: In patients with Marfan syndrome, the complications of aortic degeneration, including dissection, aneurysm, and rupture represent the main cause of mortality. Although contemporary management of ascending aortic disease requires open surgical reconstruction, endovascular repair is now available for management of descending thoracic and abdominal aortic pathology (ie, thoracic endovascular aortic repair [TEVAR], endovascular aneurysm repair [EVAR]). The short- and long-term benefit of endovascular repair in Marfan patients remains largely unproven. We examine our outcomes after EVAR

BACKGROUND: Thoraco-abdominal endovascular aortic repair [(T)EVAR] of thoracic (TEVAR) and abdominal aorta (EVAR) has surpassed open surgical repair for thoraco-abdominal aortic diseases.
OBJECTIVES: We describe the long-term outcomes of 101 (T)EVAR patients treated over the last eleven years.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 101 consecutive (T)EVAR patients was performed. The primary endpoints were in-hospital and 30-day outcomes, while the secondary endpoints were long-term outcomes and re-intervention rates.
RESULTS: Out of 101 patients, EVAR and TEVAR were performed in 40 (39.6%) an

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the safety and efficiency of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) plus an aortic extender cuff placement in treating Stanford Type B aortic dissections (TBADs).
METHODS: Clinical data on 157 patients with TBADs who underwent TEVAR in two tertiary medical centers from February 2013 to March 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. An estimated mismatch rate >120% was the indication for placement of an aortic extender cuff. Results in the perioperative and follow-up periods (≥3 months) were analyzed, especially those of aortic remodeling.
RESULTS: In total,

OBJECTIVES: Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) prosthetic vessel replacement is one of the most complex operations in the field of cardiovascular surgery. The key to success of this operation is to prevent and avoid ischemia of important organs while repairing TAAA. This study aims to summarize and analyze the effect of prosthetic vessel replacement under left heart bypass in the treatment of TAAA.
METHODS: Data of 15 patients with TAAA who underwent prosthetic vessel replacement under left heart bypass in Xiangya Hospital of Central South University were retrospectively analyzed. Accord

OBJECTIVE: Though initially protected from vessel dilation by estrogen, women may experience rapid abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) growth post-menopause. The rate of growth has been poorly defined in prior literature. Here, we describe aneurysm growth in a cohort of women found through an AAA screening program.
METHODS: Women with AAAs were retrospectively identified. Aortic imaging was reviewed, and measurements of maximum transverse and anterior-posterior diameters were completed. Growth was stratified by the type of aortic pathology (fusiform aneurysm, aortic ectasia, dissection with aneur

BACKGROUND: Lymphangiomas are rare benign tumors most commonly found in children under 2 years of age; adult cases are extremely rare. Retroperitoneal lymphangiomas represent less than 1% of all lymphangiomas. Because of their benign nature and possibility of spontaneous resolution, lymphangiomas are sometimes left untreated for long periods of time. However, if they grow large enough to compress surrounding structures, retroperitoneal lymphangiomas may cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting. We report a case of a rapidly growing retroperitoneal lymphangioma in an adult, tre

BACKGROUND: Anatomical and developmental variations of ureters and renal pelvis have been observed frequently during routine human cadaveric dissection and surgical practice; however, their coexistence with accessory or aberrant renal arteries is exceptionally rare. Accordingly, this study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of anatomical and developmental abnormalities of ureters and renal pelvis existing with accessory renal arteries in human cadavers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out on 50 human cadavers including dissected specimens (25 males and 25 females) the kidne

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of false lumen (FL) stent-grafts in the treatment of postdissection aortic aneurysms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients who underwent endovascular repair using FL stent-grafts from January 2016 to June 2019 were included. Among them, 2 patients had a prior history of type A aortic dissection, whereas 9 had undergone a prior endovascular repair for type B aortic dissection. Computed tomography angiography was performed to evaluate the reintervention and technical success rate, aortic remodeling, and other related aortic complications.

OBJECTIVES: Aortic pathologies often present with elevated inflammatory biomarkers due to the nature of the disease. Open aortic surgery causes significant trauma to the body due to often mandatory ischemic periods, long cardiopulmonary bypass times and polytransfusion. We aim to determine postoperative trends on inflammation biomarkers for different aortic pathologies and type of surgery in different segments of the aorta.
METHODS: Retrospective review of prospectively collected data of 193 consecutive patients who underwent aortic surgery in our centre between 2017 and 2021, grouped accordi

BACKGROUND: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has increasingly become the preferred surgical intervention for Stanford type B aortic dissection (TBAD). The primary objective of this procedure is to seal the primary entry tear to promote positive aortic remodeling. However, the increased use of TEVAR has also led to a rise in surgical complications. Among these, the accidental deployment of the stent into the false lumen is a rare but serious complication that can result in aortic false lumen rupture and inadequate perfusion of abdominal organs.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized by inflammation, loss of smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and degradation of the extracellular matrix in the vessel wall. Innate immune receptors such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs) were recently shown to regulate immunological processes leading to the formation and progression of atherosclerotic plaques as well as to other cardiovascular pathologies. Our aim was to investigate whether blockage of TLR signaling, under the control of TIR domain-containing adaptor protein including IFN-β (TRIF), could inhibit the inflammatory response and AAA

It is well accepted that the aortic plexus is a network of pre- and post-ganglionic nerves overlying the abdominal aorta, which is primarily involved with the sympathetic innervation to the mesenteric, pelvic and urogenital organs. Because a comprehensive anatomical description of the aortic plexus and its connections with adjacent plexuses are lacking, these delicate structures are prone to unintended damage during abdominal surgeries. Through dissection of fresh, frozen human cadavers (n = 7), the present study aimed to provide the first complete mapping of the nerves and ganglia of the aort

Chronic type B aortic dissections with continued aneurysmal expansion of the thoracoabdominal aorta after the initial thoracic endovascular aortic repair represent a subset of aortic pathology in which staged distal extension to seal additional septal tears can be advantageous. This approach may require incorporation of visceral or renal branches into the distal seal zone, while maintaining the possibility of further distal extension in the future. We describe a novel technique for incorporation of the celiac axis, with a branch stent graft delivered from a transfemoral approach, then lifted c

Introduction The mesopancreas is described as a triangle formed by the superior mesenteric vein, celiac axis (CA), and superior mesenteric artery (SMA). It is the most likely site of residual cancer and local recurrence after surgical resection, making it the key site of the current radical resection of pancreatic head cancer. The surgical anatomy of the mesopancreas triangle has not been studied in detail. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, no information is available on the impact of obesity on the anatomy of the mesopancreas triangle. Methods Between January 2016 and August 2016, 20

Femoro-femoral bypass grafts (FFBG) are performed to connect the major vessels of the lower extremities, such as the femoral arteries, to treat patients who have injured or occluded iliac arteries. Typically, patients with multiple comorbidities, such as heart failure, aneurysms, or diabetes, have a significantly higher risk of complications for open, invasive procedures to correct lower limb ischemia. This graft poses as an effective, less invasive option to treat lower-limb ischemia for higher-risk patients. This case study presents a finding of FFBG in an 82-year-old male cadaver during cad

We herein report a clinical case concerning successful staged (laparoscopic and endovascular) treatment of an elderly patient with tandem celiac trunk stenosis due to extravasal compression (Dunbar syndrome) and atherosclerotic lesion. A 65-year-old male patient was admitted to the Angiosurgical Department in July 2019 with complaints of episodes of loss of consciousness occurring after meals, lasting up to a minute and followed by a spontaneous complete recovery. On examination (ultrasound duplex scanning of the iliac trunk, MSCT angiography of the thoracic and abdominal aorta), he was diagno

This study was done in 101 internal genital organs without any underlying pathology, collected en block from girls and women aged 3 to 85 years. Five groups were formed, depending on age, obstetric and gynecological history (Tab. 1). The origin from the abdominal aorta, bilateral symmetry and course of ovarian arteries were analysed. Special attention was paid to the crossing between the artery and the ureter. The uterus with adnexa, rectum and bladder were excised. Dissected ovarian and uterine arteries were injected with radiological contrast medium (mixture of Microtrast and iodine contrast
